Javon Walker, Raiders disagree about readiness

Nothing is ever simple with Javon Walker, especially since he’s joined the Raiders.

Despite being active on their roster, Walker hasn’t been listed of late on the team’s depth chart.  And Oakland coach Tom Cable is sitting him in Week One, saying Walker is “not quite ready.”

Walker disagrees, believing he is 100%.

On most teams, this would be a big story considering the Raiders guaranteed Walker’s 2009 salary before the oft-injured receiver underwent a “secret” surgery.

In Oakland, it’s just another surprising story.  It looked like Walker was the team’s third receiver to open September, but something has apparently changed in the meantime.

With Chaz Schillens out, the Raiders are expected to start two rookie wide receivers: Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy.

Meanwhile, the man who signed a “$55 million” contract just a year ago will be watching from the sidelines.

One has to wonder….. Will Javon Walker ever be the same fantastic player he once was?

  3. TheDPR says: Sep 12, 2009 4:27 PM

The explanation is simple. The Raiders have weak ownership and a dumb head coach.

  4. 0tt0 says: Sep 12, 2009 4:30 PM

players always thing they are ready before they actually are…in the end is always better to give it more time rather than rush back
chanches are javons contract has incentives for number of starts

    What a mess

  6. HJC says: Sep 12, 2009 4:36 PM

Is there any more dysfunctional team than the raiders?

  7. slipkid says: Sep 12, 2009 4:39 PM

no. he is the consummate flash in the pan. i have to give favre credit on this one. walkedr has never been the same without favre throwing to him. and he wont be.

FumbleNuts, here’s how it usually works out.
Player has knee injury, player comes back 8-12 months later, player struggles with confidence, cuts.
Player rests through the off-season, and performs better the 2nd year after the knee injury. That would be this season.
Walker will contribute this year, but he won’t ever be the guy he was in GB (Favre helps lots of WRs look great) or Denver (their running game made even Ashley Lelie become a 1,000 yard guy).
In Oakland, the offense is run, run, screens, TE, and a deep ball once in a while. Chaz Schillens is the #1 there, Walker at best will be the second receiver in time.

you would really have to try hard to make as many bad moves as the Raiders have in the last 5+ years. I truely feel bad for the Raiders fans out there. Chris Cohan and Al Davis have taken combo’d to bring nothing but bad news and bad teams to the Bay Area. 55 million for Walker??? WOW!

  10. DarthPirate says: Sep 12, 2009 5:01 PM

    Walker will eventually contribute.
By the way, he restructured his salary in one way or another so it’s not quite as obscene as it was.
I’m looking forward to seeing Louis Murphy starting, at least until Chaz gets back.

55 million? I thought he restructured his deal. Anyway, missing the point, he may miss this game but will be a factor down the stretch.
Watch for Murphy to have a big game in place of Chaz on Monday

Whew! I almost thought you were going to run out of negative Oaktown stories there for a minute. Hey, if Walker and the Raiders DO agree, there’s alway the “which running back thinks he should start” story. Don’t sweat it, you’ll find something.

  13. JustDieBaby says: Sep 12, 2009 5:36 PM

Just another “brilliant” FA signing by our Clueless owner Al Davis.
Then just to show how stupid he is. Davis tops it off last year by not letting Walker quit when he wanted to.
    Suks to be us RaiderFan
Its ok though. Walkers missing production will be replaced by dhBUST not catching any passes. But he does look good stylin & profiling getting off the bus in his track shoes.

Two rookie wideouts? That’s a sobering thought. The Raiders are probably going to be looking at 9 hats in the box on 1st and 2nd down. Maybe they’ve been working on some direct snaps to the RBs and using their giant QB as an extra run blocker.

Its going to be ugly for this degenerate team.

  17. bwisnasky says: Sep 12, 2009 6:04 PM

Nice to mention the 55 Mil contract without mentioning the fact he restructured for a lot less…. mediots

  18. ragin40 says: Sep 12, 2009 6:12 PM

Come Tuesday you guys will be trying to pick up Luis Murphy for your ffl teams sukahs…

  19. lezmaka says: Sep 12, 2009 7:30 PM

And people say there’s nothing wrong with the Raiders.
    lol

    my point exactly bwisnasky

  21. Quagmire says: Sep 12, 2009 8:14 PM

Sure, Walker isn’t worth what he’s being paid, but at least Al didn’t overpay for the receiver with the hyphenated name…oh wait…

  22. twinkletoes says: Sep 12, 2009 8:17 PM

Javon Walker is one of the remaining overpaid players of recent note. The other is non-Pro Bowl DT Tommy Kelly. Walker’s story definitely has an unfortunate twist to it though. Ever since the shooting death of Broncos CB Darrent Williams, Javon has not been the same. Remember, Williams died in his arms. One can only speculate how this event has affected the man privately, but his play on the field has only gone from bad to worse. It just seems as though he has never recovered professionally from this tragic event.
Al Davis has always been fond of bringing outcasts into the fold. But in Walker’s case, he may have bitten off more than he can chew, and overpaid to boot. Even under his restructured deal, Walker is still overpaid. The man has had only two seasons of note in his entire pro career and has done nothing for the Raiders.
Given the off-field difficulties he has encountered, there is still the strong possibility that Walker’s story may yet take another turn for the worse. He clearly has inner demons that haven’t been overcome. And until he can deal with them, we may never see him get his professional life back on track.

real surprising…the guy couldn’t get any separation against the Seahawks because he is slow…and this is the Raiders fault. Walker says he’s 100%, Raiders say…um, maybe not…yeah the Raiders are so dysfunctional. This happens on a daily basis with every team in the nfl. I don’t get why there are so many haters out there. I guess jealousy breeds this type of stuff. I would love to be a fan of the Chargers…who can’t get it done, the Broncos…well, they’re a mess..and the Chiefs….well, maybe not. I don’t know…I guess if I were a fan of the Patriots, Colts or Steelers…then maybe I’d talk some trash…but if i were a fan of any other afc team or nfc team, not named the giants…I’d probably keep my yap shut.

    Start the rookies.

  25. deederbob says: Sep 12, 2009 11:09 PM

Javon Walker is the greatest gift the Broncos ever gave Methuselah Davis for $55mil.

  26. Pat says: Sep 12, 2009 11:47 PM

Javon Walker is just an whiny wide out. He had one good season in Green Bay. He held out for a new contract. When Green Bay didn’t give him one he cried and came into camp. Because he wasn’t in camp he blew out he knee in the first game. The new year the Pack traded him. Thank God.
What’s is up with the WR’s in the NFL? Too many think the game won’t exists without them!
