Santonio rocks his Vick jersey

Via the Twitter feed of Sheil Kapadia of philly.com, we’ve become aware of a potential mini-controversy arising from the Titans-Steelers game that launched the 2009 season.

Pittsburgh wideout Santonio Holmes pre-game and post-game attire included a Mike Vick jersey.

In our view, it’s no big deal.  A lot of players have voiced their support for Vick, and Vick and Holmes share an agent, Joel Segal.  So Holmes likely feels an even greater connection to Vick than other players might, since Holmes likely was getting updates from Segal regarding Vick’s status, during and after Vick’s incarceration.

Also, there’s a chance that Segal gave Holmes a firm talking-to last year after Santonio was pulled over with pot in his car, and that Segal reminded Holmes of Vick’s predicament in urging Holmes to clean up his act.

Still, Pittsburgh fans are fairly zealous about this kind of stuff.  I vaguely recall a dustup from the latter days of the Barry Bonds era with the local baseball team (before pretty much everyone hated him) that he showed up somewhere in a Los Angeles Kings jacket, despite the presence of a pretty good NHL team not far from wear the Pirates play their games.

That said, Holmes has plenty of juice right now in Pittsburgh.  So unless and until he comes out of the tunnel on game day wearing an Eagles jersey, it likely won’t be a problem.

hes not saying he supports the Eagles…just supports Vick. Anyone who tries to make anything out of this needs a life.

I’m a huge Steelers fan, and the way Santonio’s been playing, he could show up in a Ray Lewis jersey, and I wouldn’t care. Just keep catching the ball and scoring TD’s!

Whoa! What a great story. You are one hell of a reporter Florio.

  5. Dirte says: Sep 12, 2009 10:06 AM

Santurdio and ‘con Vick’ – most convicts do support each other and, like in the movie ‘Shawshank,’ none of them actually did the crime they are accused of right?
BTW, not a big fan of any grown man wearing another grown man’s jersey either.

  6. mike s says: Sep 12, 2009 10:12 AM

Another obvious connection: Terrel Pryor at Ohio State took a lot of flack for a show of support to Vick. (I think he had eye-black that said Mica Vick / Mica is his sister but her last name is not Vick.)
Santonio is an Ohio State product, so he’s trying to show he’s got Terrel Pryor’s back.

  7. BasicInstinct says: Sep 12, 2009 10:14 AM

Geez, no-one can help it if he loves the guy….and see, they did want Vick in Pittsburg.

    Florio,
You may also be forgetting about Santonio’s Ohio State roots. With the current Terrell Pryor situation, where Pryor showed his support for Mike Vick (via the eye black strips w/ Mike Vick printed on them), Santonio may be attempting to voice his support for both Vick and Pryor through the wearing of the now notorious #7 jersey.
Holmes may be attempting to (in some roundabout way) deflect some of the attention so focused on Pryor with the eye strips. Or he may just be trying to prove a point that it is okay to support the player that used to be the most dangerous weapon on a football field.

I find it very odd to support Vick.

According to steelernation.com, anyone that would support a dog killing felon, thug, gangbanger like Vick who will never reform (because, you know, it’s in his blood) is a worthless piece of shit themselves.
I guess all these Steeler fans (you know, the racist ones) that feel this way now have to root for this worthless piece of shit named Santonio to do well.

Florio’s Brain told him: “I’d like to have another record setting traffic day. With college football in full force, I need to compete. Let me see if I can give the large pool of Steeler-haters and the large pool of Vick-haters a place to take out their frustrations together.”

  15. lowleadman says: Sep 12, 2009 10:49 AM

    Het Florio,
Instead of posting this crap, why don’t you do your lawyer thing and find out what the NFL can and cannot do about the Dick Seymour situation. It’s a confusing issue, only made more confusing by your last three posts, each post contradicting the previous one.

  19. Atlanta Love says: Sep 12, 2009 10:54 AM

Who cares what jersey he wears or who he supports besides alot of hypocritical and judgmental
    caucasians?
Vick is NOT gangbanger. What in the hell are yall talking about?
The comments that are made on the internet show that racism is alive and kicking.

  20. CT Stiller says: Sep 12, 2009 10:55 AM

I still don’t understand why people support a guy who sucked as bad as Vick. He was a glorified RB. As a Steelers fan I hope Santonio distances himself from this guy. He actually has talent and I don’t want Vick’s “work ethic” rubbing off on him.

I dont care that he supports Vick .
I like Vick , also since im a Va Tech fan . But dont wear a Eagles jersey for god sakes . Dont ever show support to the losers to the east .
Wear a Falcons or Tech one first .

  23. Phenom says: Sep 12, 2009 11:05 AM

I don’t like to normally point out mistakes, but I’m surprised you guys aren’t all over Florio for writing “wear” instead of “where”. BTW, I think this story is a non-issue.

Clearly showing support for Pryor and Vick. People need to get off it already!

There is a boat load of felons in the NFL. So many in fact, that there’s a good chance there’s one on your team – care to mention who that is?
By your reasoning, does this mean that every Ravens fan on the planet is a worthless piece of shit because they support Ray Lewis?

  27. C.Bass says: Sep 12, 2009 11:51 AM

Yawn. Some people really need to get a life. Does hating really make you feel better about yourself?
    Alpheratz, “gangbanger”?

It’s written “where” not “wear” when you refer to a location Florio. Can’t believe a Dane has to correct you.
If you’re low on sugar Florio, stay off the Pepsi Max and hit that Tupperware with Lucky Charms instead.
Don’t go Emmitt on us now…

Atlanta Love, don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re an idiot.
Evidently, you can’t grasp the fact that some of us DO have morals and DON’T have much sympathy for criminals.
Of course, with all of the crime in Atlanta, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised when a resident of that cesspool chimes in with a pro-thug opinion.

  31. CT Stiller says: Sep 12, 2009 12:38 PM

Come on guys. Everyone knows that if you hate Vick or dog fighting in general you’re obviously a complete racist. Now when are they going to officially make ebonics part of our country’s dialect already?

Ghetto loyalty….You would think with the PR hit Big Ben has been taking lately, and since he’s all about support, (yeah i know it’s bogus), he’d be sporting a Roethlisberger jersey, the guy actually throwing the ball to him, and his teammate…I would think Steelers fans would be pissed seeing one of their players in an Eagles jersey, it seems a bit odd…..Don’t ya think? But the OSU roots are a convenient excuse….
