If Seymour hadn't shown, Raiders could have gotten their pick back

Though the trade that sent defensive lineman Richard Seymour from New England to Oakland for a 2011 first-round pick ultimately went through when Seymour decided to demonstrate his euphoria about the prospects of playing for the Raiders by showing up for work a day after filing a grievance aimed at keeping the team from squeezing his "Little Richard" into reporting for duty, we've got one last item to clear up regarding this transaction.

Per a league source, the NFL informed the Raiders that they had two options, if Seymour failed to come to the Bay Area within five days after receiving a coincidentally named "five-day letter" from the team.

The Raiders could have put Seymour on the reserve/left club list, keeping from playing for anyone in 2009 and tolling his contract for a full year.  Or the Raiders could have put Seymour on the reserve/failed to report list, which would have allowed them to recover their pick from the Pats.

So even though the Patriots were doing their damnedest to bolster the notion that Seymour was Oakland's problem, the Pats still could have inherited an even bigger problem, if Seymour hadn't hopped a plane for California.

you know, if you to take a look at Jerry McDonalds post-press-wrap blog you'll notice Davis aknowledges (indirectly) that he follows your website and even took a veiled shot at both you and NFP. At least you're on the map with an NFL owner

Now don't you feel like an ass for all of those stupid speculative reports you ran saying how it was all the Raiders problem??? You acted like you knew something that you clearly did not, and kissed Belichicks "rings" the whole damn time! Deutche!!!

Florio the dipstick still trying to stir the pot. Why don't you grow up.

Your Anti Al and Anti Raiders bias is shocking, what's the matter, have the NBC bigwigs and real journalists demanded you try and muck rake fabricated lies at every opportunity about the Raiders as part of your "deal"?

  7. A_MAC says: September 13, 2009 2:32 PM

smart raider fans knew this the whole time.

  8. stanjam says: September 13, 2009 2:49 PM

Wait, Florio spent the whole time trying to say that the Raiders could get their pick back, and somehow Florio was kissing BB's rings?

At any rate, we will never know if the Raiders could have gotten their pick back. If they did, I would imagine that NE also would have gotten Seymour (although an unhappy Seymour) back. As it is both teams are happy. Davis got his precious Seymour, and NE has an extra (and perhaps extremely valuable) first round pick in 2011.

Nothing worse than a fool that does not know when to fold his cards.

Al Davis just sat back and allowed all of you clowns to just digg your own grave knowing what would come out once Seymour reported.

You and many others are trying to sell us way to hard, all it does is make you all look like bigger fools than Al Davis and Richard Seymour have already made you.

Here is what Al Davis had to say about who, ha to be Mike Lombardi,

"We have one guy on our own network that we own, the NFL Network, who’s worked for five teams in this league, he’s been fired by all five teams and he comes on as an expert and says that Richard doesn’t want to play for the Raiders, he doesn’t want to go out there. Which was totally untrue, because I would have backed away if he didn’t want to come out here."

And here is a hello to Rodney Harrisson from Al Davis,

"But I’ll tell you this. For example, there’s one player that I remember that keeps attacking us. In the year 2003, he sat in my office and begged for a contract, and wouldn’t give it to him because of rumors. That guy attacked us on the television shows, and it’s only because I wouldn’t give him a contract and I wouldn’t let him play here. I can go through the litany."

Old Rodney received a tap in the ass and was told to head on down the road.

Nothing like a bunch of washed up out of work guys still smelling those sour grapes to try and spread the bull.

As to that guy above that was fored by 5 teams. I do not think Al was counting his time he went to work for Denver for nothing after Al fired him.

Denver would not hire him for money but brought him in since he offered to work for nothing, they picked his brain on everything Raiders and fired him 2 weeks later, priceless.

Now that is an example of just how bitter the man Al would not allow to watch practice and banished to spending his remaining days with the team walking around the parking lot.

    Raider Rock.

This is a bad precedent, but it sounds good to fans.

Imagine if a player doesn't want to be traded. All they have to do is not show up.

  11. madstork43 says: September 13, 2009 3:07 PM

No, Florio spent the whole time saying it was a done deal, that Seymour was "the Raiders problem", and the pick was non-refundable. Jackass.

  12. PatriotsRule says: September 13, 2009 3:16 PM

The Raiders probably will recieve a pick for Seymour. After he performs well in his contract year, the Raiders will franchise him and then trade him, probably for draft pick(s) and Richard gets his big contract. Everbody is a winner. Yay.

gee......that's real interesting Florio.....only thing is, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW 3 DAYS AGO.....it's over and done with so who gives a rat's ass now?........day late and a dollar short

  15. Ralphie says: September 13, 2009 4:35 PM

"Old Rodney received a tap in the ass and was told to head on down the road."

...where he got two SB Rings and the Raiders continued to sink into mediocrity this decade...

Sometimes the best decisions are the ones that someone else makes for you (if that really was Harrison). Grandpa has shown in the past decade (as he's continued to sink into senility) that he's lost his touch when it comes to recruiting (and drafting) talent.

And if you think Seymour wanted to leave the Pats and go to Oakland you are delusional. He had to. He would not have been paid. He only went when he was FORCED (he got the "letter").

And all you "I told you so" geniuses who are basing your "I told you so's" on Florio's customary (and dubious) "league sources." You think Goodell and the "league sources" were going to let Seymour set a precedence by voiding a trade while under contract just by not showing up? Setting off an unprecedented situation that players and agents alike would have used with regularity as leverage to get more cash or perks? I'm sure Old Roger thought all that chaos would be pretty comical...he would have loved that legacy. The only way this wasn't going down is if Seymour retired. That's the only option he (and the Raiders) had.

  16. RaiderMight says: September 13, 2009 5:10 PM

Florio, PFT was the only set of dummies that said the Raiders wouldn't. Welcome to the logical world you dopes. Remember to board the yellow bus tomorrow.

  17. RaiderMight says: September 13, 2009 5:15 PM

LOL! He should stick to copying and pasting links like the rest of us instead of assuming he knows anything the insiders know.

  19. Alpheratz says: September 13, 2009 7:27 PM

Or the Raiders could have put Seymour on the reserve/failed to report list, which would have allowed them to recover their pick from the Pats.

The only possible, logical way they get that pick returned is if Seymour would have retired, and stayed retired.

The "league source" wouldn't even put his/her name on in. It's bullshit.

  20. Ryan35 says: September 13, 2009 8:05 PM

No surprise there, like most intelligent football people have said all along it wasnt the Raiders problem. I would like to laugh now however I cannot laugh at people who are ignorant, that is not their fault, its their parents who passed down the idiot genes.

  21. Ryan35 says: September 13, 2009 8:16 PM

Where are all the Pat's post, lol probally broke a finger or hand falling off the bandwagon.

"The "league source" wouldn't even put his/her name on in. It's bullshit"
When do Florio's league sources ever put their name on it? If he had to do that do you think any of these articles in regards to Seymore not showing would have ever been printed? His mom is not a credible league source, he isnt going to want to tell you thats his source. What league source would want to be connected to this train wreck? Are you new? This is the best copy and paste NFL news site ever, hands down, but don't come here for breaking stories, go to Ochocinco's twitter page if you want news from real reporters. LOL

  22. Ralphie says: September 13, 2009 10:30 PM

I'm Mike's secret identity. I go by the pseudonym "League Source" Mike and I have figured out that we can keep this waste of time, now insignificant and monotonous "story" going indefinitely and milk it for everything we can to get eyeballs on this site...and to get retarded Raider fans to reply how they new all along that they were right and they'd get their #1 back (and that Grandpa Al is their personal Jesus).

Our next piece tomorrow will be a retraction that will say that the Raiders actually would not have gotten the pick back as our source found out that in retrospect that was "bad information" and all bets were off. This will lead to Pats fans saying they "were right all along" and that Raiders fans are asshats. After we get that shit-storm spun up will flip it back around again, or put some crazy scenario together on Tuesday that will give the Raiders fans hope that they, in the end will be "right" (and that Al is a "Genius").

We'll keep this dog on life support until the Super Bowl.

  23. Lost says: September 14, 2009 1:02 AM

Richard Seymour asserted he wasn't joining Raider until his contract issues with the Patriot were resolved.

Although Belichick publicly stated this was all Raider concern could Seymour's agent (Eugene Whassisname) have succeeded in obtaining some form of contract termination payment? As speculated earlier, it would be difficult to fathom what Patriot owed R. Seymour. However, one can see that Seymour's holdout would have given him the upper hand in any outstanding contract dispute
