McNabb's status will hinge on pain tolerance

The specific availability of Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who suffered a broken rib against the Panthers, for Week Two and beyond currently is unknown.

But, as one league source explains it, the key will be whether and to what extent McNabb can tolerate the pain.

Another consideration is whether and to what extent he’s willing to risk further injury to the broken bone.

Here’s the reality.  With Mike Vick waiting in the wings and with the Eagles assessing (we believe, and we’ve been told) whether Vick could become the new starter in 2010 and beyond, there’s no way McNabb will be missing any time.

Even if the pain is too great to allow McNabb to play in Week Two against the Saints, we’re certain that he’ll be back for Week Three, since that’s the day Mike Vick is eligible to return from his two-game suspension.

He’ll play. They’ll shoot the rib up and put some kind of brace/pad on it and he’ll be fine. The main issue is going to be him having to keep up with Drew Brees next week, unless the defense does to the Saints what they did to the Carolina Pussycats today.

McNabb can match points for points it depends on what Reid says. If he sits he will sit week 2 and 3 and be back after the bye ready to run for the ring!! GO EAGLES!

The thing is and the Merrill Reese said it best “In a game like this the Eagles aren’t as good as they look and the Pussycats aren’t as bad as they look” McDermott will have to relieve less on blitz n more on zone and the back field. Macho will be tested and exploited if hes not what hes made out to be.

I dont get why everyone thinks Vick is Donovan’s replacement in 2010. The entire Eagles orginsation has made no comments to that fact at all. Why would they? First off Donovan is one of the best Qbs in the league and has said multiple times he wants to finish his career in philly. If for some assinine reason they want him gone in two years why would they replace him with Vick. They are pretty much the same age and Donovan has been the better qb there whole careers.
Its funny though every person in every type of media has said they have sources or have heard what the Eagles were planning on doing with Donovan for the past 5 years. And everyone of uses have been wrong Everytime.
Supposedly he was going to be traded and replaced by Jeff Garcia in 06. Then 07 was his last year b/c Kolb was going to replace him and he was going to be traded to the Bears. Then 08 was his last year b/c he was going to be traded to the Bears again. Now Vick is going to replace him this year half way through the year, and Donovan is gone after this year. Or the Eagles arent going to extend him and 2010 is his last year. Then 2011 will be the year of Vick.
And thats just the trade talk. I havent even talked about all the things uses say about how us fans feel about him or all the things uses say Donovan is thinking and Feeling. Or the things uses say the Eagles think about Mcnabb.
You would think you people would be tired of being wrong by now.

Bleedgreen…are u sure??? I’m like really panicking right now…..omg I hope he can go!!!…….kolb will doom our season!!!!

  7. Huskersrule says: Sep 13, 2009 5:28 PM

That must mean he is out for the season.

Despite what Vox Veritas would say, I see no possible way McNabb misses the 3rd week game, and I’m pretty sure he’ll play the next game. He threw three touchdowns on a broken ankle that ended his season a couple years ago. Broken ribs? been there, done that. he’s played with them before. he’s played with a sports hernia before. he can do it. if the Lions can put up 27 on the saints today with a rookie QB and a crappy O-line, we can do the same with McNabb injured.

Come on Florio we are all waiting on the Vikings/Favre article. You know you cant resist. Favre lead Vikings score 34 points. What what bob nelson/jimmy smith? Let me taste your tears

  10. aschles says: Sep 13, 2009 5:33 PM

Vick was not a better QB than McNabb in 2004, which was Vick’s best year. Why would he be better than him now, after being out of the league for 2 years. He just isn’t going to be a starter for the Eagles. McNabb will be back next week.

  11. KaiserSoze says: Sep 13, 2009 5:37 PM

Give him a couple of Midol and tell him to suck it up.

  12. Cleg says: Sep 13, 2009 5:40 PM

Didn’t Steve Young play every year with broken ribs? I hate the Eagles (Hail to the Redskins) but McNabb is tough, he’ll play.

Didn’t a punter just score a touchdown against your vaunted defense?

  15. GPLmark says: Sep 13, 2009 5:52 PM

He played with a BROKEN LEG before and threw 4 touchdowns! If anyone could play through this, McNabb can.
And Vick will not be the starting QB for the Eagles this year or next unless McNabb, Kolb, and Feely (who I assume they will resign if McNabb does miss time) are all injured.

  16. NoFootballtalk says: Sep 13, 2009 5:53 PM

For the last time, Vick is not being looked at as the replacement for McNabb. They want to add weapons to the offense and give him a second chance. You honestly believe that the eagles would replace 32 year old McNabb who would be 30 by next season? Vick has no accuracy and control over his throws. I’m pretty sure Vick will be trade bait next season

when did vick become an even competent qb? does the guy even have a 50% completion ratio over his career? ok he can run, make him a rb

Dang it florio, I’m already drunk. This new drinking game I play that involves me taking a shot whenever you mention a ‘league source’ or ‘team source’ or ‘source close the situation’ is gonna destroy my kidneys. Seriously, I think you make up this $hi* as a joke and laugh at all the comments. Vick as McNabb’s replacement…awesome. Nobody will judge you for admitting to partial down’s syndrome I promise.

  20. raideralex99 says: Sep 13, 2009 6:08 PM

As soon as the Eagles start losing … McNabb will blame it on the injury and pack it in.

  21. VoxVeritas says: Sep 13, 2009 6:18 PM

“Didn’t a punter just score a touchdown against your vaunted defense?”
Why would they have their defense in there on a FG try? Maybe that’s why Smith scored a TD.

  22. Joe in Toronto, Canada says: Sep 13, 2009 6:33 PM

Compared to Mike Vick, McNabb is a very accurate passer……….compared to Mike Vick.
Say what you will about Brett Favre, but we all know there would be no question about HIM playing, none.

  23. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Sep 13, 2009 6:52 PM

Now we know why the Eagles brought in another QB to compete with Kolb. McNabb is an above average QB, but he’s made of paper mache’. The guy is almost injured as much if not more than there running back who’s also made of tissue. Perhaps it’s something in the water?????

  24. Smush Rodrigez says: Sep 13, 2009 6:57 PM

    what route36west said….
Florio, Sal Pal, and the rest of the national media has been consistently wrong about all things Eagles – especially with personnel (McNabb).

Giants fans…. Don’t hate. The eagles beat the crap out of a playoff team from last year on the road today. Also, please don’t forget the eagles beat the giants ass up and down that butthole of north jersey in the playoffs last year.
Best of luck with that receiving corps this year giants!!!!

Vox, no more research/excuse time. Philly is goin to wash the turf with your teams face.

In short…your FG/ST blows. See you soon.

“Say what you will about Brett Favre, but we all know there would be no question about HIM playing, none.”
Astute observation. Especially considering that it’s come up within the last, oh, week or so, that there in fact WAS a question about him playing last year. And with every passing day this year, he’s finding another excuse to use as a fallback for a possible bad performance.
Say what you will about Donovan McNabb, but we all know that the only question about HIM playing is the one the media keeps asking in an effort to get a story.
