Rex Ryan rallies the troops

With the Jets at 1-0 and the Patriots (as of this posting) struggling at home with the Bills, it’s not to early to peek ahead to Week Two, when the Pats will visit the Meadowlands.

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who previously vowed that he doesn’t plan to kiss the rings of New England coach Bill Belichick, talked up the game during a Monday press conference.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Ryan said in comments distributed by the team.  “They’re better than us in two spots that I know for sure and that’s at head coach and quarterback.   But, we’ll find out who has the better team right now.   We’ll see.

“We need our fans.  We need our fans to show up.  Our team is going to show up [and] we need our fans to show up.  We need to be loud and make it miserable on them.  We know [Tom] Brady has a lot of poise.  He’s got all that kind of stuff.  The pressure isn’t just on one man.   You want to make it on a whole unit to where they’ve got to pick the hots, all the communication and all the protections.

“I believe in our fans, too.   Our guys are going to show up and our fans are going to show up and it’s going to be on.  We want to have a place where it’s just absolutely miserable to come to.  That’s what I’m looking forward to. . . .  Let’s see how we do.  Let’s see how our fans perform.  I’m looking forward to it because I’m expecting huge things out of them too just like I did this football team.

“If we all get on the same page and we make it loud, players are going to pick up from the enthusiasm of our crowd as well.  Obviously, we will be juiced up from our own enthusiasm, but when our crowd is with you on top of that, it makes it tough.  I’ve been in those stadiums where it seems like you’ve got 14 guys on the field on defense.  The offense can’t communicate.  Your crowd is so into it, it almost seems like that.”

The Jets definitely have rowdy fans (e.g., D gate).  But they haven’t had much reason to direct that zeal to the field.

Maybe they now do, especially with the Patriots looking like anything but the franchise that ran the regular-season table two years ago.

that speech is vintage buddy. give rex a little while to get the whole team to buy in and understand the system, and the meadowlands will be a tough place to play. north jersey is like here in philly; there’s plenty of attitude just looking for a place to be directed….
i especially liked the way the jets defense turned the ball over yesterday. and i suspect, so did those rabid j-e-t-s fans little buddy was talking to.

They just called a late hit on Duante Whitner for a tackle on Wes Welker. It is totally ridicolous the favoritism in this league. First the hit was clean Welker was still on his feet falling forward and Whitner finished him off. They also called it a Spear. What? The man lead with his head but did not contact it with Welker he had his head off to the side and hit with his shoulder.
They will call late hits on any team that does it to a patriot even if its not there QB. But jumping knee first in the endzone on a guy after hes been in the endzone on the ground for 3 seconds and Knocking out the franchise QB of the Eagles is know big deal I guess. To miss the call on the field is one thing but for the NFL not to fine the guy after they had time to look at it is inexcusable(w/e). It is disgusting the way the NFL picks and chooses which franchises and players are more important.

    Seriously ?
The Pats might have not been spectacular but they ain’t the Texans. Good thing the Jets fans are use to disappointment because the Pats wont be denied.

    I count a few more……
    right flanker
    slot receiver
    left and right guard
    center
    mike linebacker

ESPN has become totally unwatchable… the slobbering love affair w/ the Patriots and Tom Brady is just way over the top!
I missed most all of the 1st quarter, but caught the 2nd. I counted 28 Tom Brady/ golden boy references in 1 quarter, most of which were when the Pats offense wasn’t even on the field; at 28 I shut the TV off.
I simply can’t take it anymore… I can no longer watch ESPN, which is why I have self-imposed a ban of the network in my house… time to step it up FSN!
    F…ESPN!

What Ryan really said: “I don’t think that our team can beat the Pats. Maybe our fans will win it for us….PLEEEEEASE?”
Seriously though. Should be a good game. The Jets are looking good, and the Patriots are just starting to find themselves. The defense is brand spanking new (and who knows if Mayo can play next week), and Tom is just starting to get comfortable playing under pressure again. For the first half Brady’s mechanics were off when he had pressure, not planting. As the game went on though, Brady seemed to get lost in the game, and started looking like his old self. We will have to see how the Jets handle a good team.

If you’re a Jets season ticket holder who doesn’t show up, Rex’ll bop ya like Poppa Buddy on Gilbride!

Raven fan here. Rex will have his team ready, and Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard will do the job for the D. The Pats will have to play better than they did tonight to beat this team.

    @ Clark
I was actually trying to make a drinking game out of it… every time they said Captain Douchs’ name, but was unable to continue as I got to wasted!
And yes, I do hate the Patriots…

If the Patriots offensive line doesn’t get better than it was tonight, then Brady is gonna get obliterated. You just know that Ryan has some creative blitzes saved up for this one.

Jets fans can come out in full force, make all the noise in the world and it won’t make a bit of difference.
Maybe if they allow a few of them on the field to help out though…..

  16. overkil2 says: Sep 15, 2009 9:02 AM

Wow, I hate both teams, but if i had to choose who I’d want to win, I’d have to choose the Jets. We all know that they fold come the end of the season.
