Urlacher is out for the year

The good news is that there likely will be no tension this year between Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher.

Urlacher says, per the Chicago Tribune, that he likely will miss the entire season after undergoing surgery Monday to repair a dislocated wrist.

Specifically, Urlacher told Vaughn McClure of the Tribune via text message “season is over.”

The club has not yet confirmed the development, and coach Lovie Smith is expected to address the situation at his Monday press conference.

Seventh-year veteran Hunter Hillenmeyer replaced Urlacher last night.  It remains to be seen whether the Bears add a veteran middle linebacker.

One top-of-the-head possibility is Napoleon Harris, who has performed well in the Vikings’ verstion of the Cover 2 defense in two separate stints.  Harris recently re-joined the Raiders, but thereafter was cut.

As a Packers fan and stockholder — I am very sorry to hear this news and wish Brian a speedy recovery. He is a worthy opponent and a this is a terrible loss for the Bears.

Man. Just when the announcers were jockin him last night about this being his first healthy season in a while. Time for the Bears to go in another direction. Never thought ol’ Crybaby Cutler would throw more picks than the amount Chicago threw at Denver to get this turd. Bears = done this decade.

Jay Cutler now has a Favre-like excuse built in (just like the end of last year with my Donks): “We can’t stop anybody.”
Well, Jayby–you can stop yo’self from throwing three interceptions (the one that fat dude caught was a fluke).
    Vintage Cutler last night.

…wait, you mean you lunkheads haven’t done any of those things? You just sit at your keyboard and call professional athletes “pussies”?
I am shocked. Is this what the Internet is like?
Sarcasm aside, I feel bad for this development–so much hope for this team coming into the season, and after one game, so many reasons for them to be confused and frustrated. Good luck to all in bouncing back.

Make no mistake…Cutler is still the biggest pussy on the team. Did you see rookie Clay Matthews punk him out after he threw an INT to the 330 lb. DT on the screen?
Anyhow, as a Broncos fan, that decision to trade the Broncos’ 1st rounder next year and to keep the Bears’ 1st rounder doesn’t seem so stupid now, does it?
I wish Urlacher the best though — he is an incredible LB. Wish the Broncos got him in the trade.

  37. whosthisguy says: Sep 14, 2009 12:53 PM

My question is, how does season ending wrist surgery mean that Urlacher is a pussy? I don’t get it. Most of you guys twist your ankle getting out of the tub and stay at home on sick leave for a week and you have the nerve to call one of the toughest s.o.b. in the business a pussy?
By the way, I’m not even a Bears fan. I’m a Falcons fan but first I’m a fan of the game. NOTHING about the way Urlacher plays says “pussy” to me.

Must be more to this, or he just doesn’t want to play and is prolonging the actual surgery

This is a real shame. The Bears showed a lot of promise. It isn’t often you can call a team’s season over after week 1, but that seems to be the consensus, so I will say 1 down, and two to go.
Viking fans, you stay classy. Trashing on an injured player is usually reserved for Eagle fans, but if you want to stoop to that level, have at it. Not to mention that when Philly did it, it was their OWN team that ended said player’s career. You all are like dirty vultures, squawking over someone else’s kill.
I can’t wait to see what happens when the karma train finally arrives in Mpls (I heard the bridge was out). One hit to Peterson’s knee and you’re just as done as the Bears are. I would be treading lightly if I were you…

  50. VegasBronco says: Sep 14, 2009 2:07 PM

Brian Urlacher is an All-Pro and pro bowler who will REALLY be missed by the Bears.
If Derrick Brooks is signed then Lovie Smith is really feeling the heat from upstairs. Orlando Pace was not a good choice and the DB selections are biting back.

  51. Qoojo says: Sep 14, 2009 2:11 PM

Packers fan here saying sorry to hear this news for the bears. Injuries suck. I am surprised that he could not play with a cast or something. Must have been pretty nasty.

  52. jimmySee says: Sep 14, 2009 2:14 PM

Vikings fans, obviously don’t get it. That team is an expansion newcomer to the league, who may be out of the twin cities in a few years.
If that happens, the Packers will recover their upper midwest fanbase, which followed the team from the Curley Lambeau days.
The Packers and Bears have been playing each other since, what, 1919?
That’s a great rivalry with strong feelings, but respect on both sides.
When you beat someone, you want to beat their best.
It’s a game, not a death match. There is no job to be taken in a serious injury like that.
Hope Brian does fully recover, and we see him on the field when the Bears and Packers hook up in 2010.

  53. HammrHeadShk says: Sep 14, 2009 2:20 PM

On another note it look’s as if most people who are saying this are Vikings fans.
You won a game. GOOD FOR YOU.
But……you played the browns. THE BROWNS.

NFC North Threads, where idiots convene.
As a Vikings fan, I find the injury to Urlacher to be a shame. Like someone above posted, you want to go out and wipe the floor with the best a team has, not a bunch of scrub backups. It’s one thing to cheer against a team, but to wish injury onto them is pathetic.
Fortunately, from what I’ve seen, the Vikings fan on this site makes up the majority of fans that real fans are ashamed of. This site just happens to be a cesspool of NFC North trolls, with only a few exceptions. You know, the types that use a bridge collapse that killed fathers, mothers, and children to talk crap against a rival team.
As far as the rivalry argument: Rivalries are created by the fans, not the ages. Fans change, generations change, and so do rivalries. I, personally, feel as though the Pack/Vikings rivalry is much stronger, but that may just be the perception I had living in Superior, WI as a Vikings fan a few years back. But again, who cares who’s rivalry is stronger? I would say that the North has the strongest 3-way rivalry in the game. I live in Washington, and my local sports bar has an “NFC North Corner” designated for NFC North games. And none for any other division. What does that tell you?
Then again, since the Vikings always wipe the floor with the Bears (including the Vikings first game, ever), I’m not sure you can call it a rivalry.
    Cutler sucks.
