The only thing that’s keeping the days before the first Patriots-Jets game of the Rex Ryan era from looking like a pay-per-view wrestling card is the presence of a tux-wearing Gene Okerlund going from man to man with a microphone.
Safety Kerry Rhodes recently turned up the heat considerably, both by saying that the Jets hope to “embarrass” the Patriots and by suggesting that the Jets will be swarming around quarterback Tom Brady’s surgically-repaired left knee.
On Thursday, Jets coach Rex Ryan — the Captain Lou Albano of this runup to the Royal Rumble — tried to explain away Rhodes’ remarks.
“I think they just want to win,” Ryan said. “Our franchise has been embarrassed [with] eight straight losses at home [to the Patriots]. You’ll have to ask Kerry if that’s what he meant, but that’s probably where that tone was coming from.”
Right. Winning the game equates to embarrassing the other team.
Then again, maybe it really will be an embarrassment for the Patriots to lose to a Jets team that seems to be a lot more concerned about talking than preparing for the game — and that thinks any Week Two contest would be remotely on par with a Super Bowl.
Cards fan here, jets fan as a very young kid (Namath!), got interested again with Favre there last year, and now know a little more about this team. I like what they have going there. Sanchez should be good.
And the message Rex left for season ticket holders? How cool. I LOVE that. Why not call them and speak your mind like that? If I were a Jets season ticket holder, I would have really liked getting that message. Clearly, this guy cares about this game. And if you played for him, how could you not get totally fired up after hearing this?
I like it.

i think getting caught cheating and knowing all of your superbowls are illegitimate is embarrasing enough
I like that Kerry acknowledges it would be embarrassing to lose to the Jets.
“Right. Winning the game equates to embarrassing the other team.”
I’m pretty sure that when the Lions eventually win a game, the team they beat will be embarrassed.
I think the league should insist the Jets change their name to the NY Cockroaches.
Put a nice fat one on the side of the helmet for a logo.
Ryan needs to put on the red nose and the oversize shoes.
They have only lost 8 straight in their place to the Pats. But now they have a big mouth coach and a rookie QB so they are going to embarrass the Pats?
What a pathetic franchise. I would hate them but they aren’t worthy of anything but loathing. Playing the Cockroaches is like stepping on dogshit. You just want to get it off your shoe and forget about it.
Now the stealers I can hate.
I like what kerry said, it might not be what they will do, but i’m pretty damn sure brady will be thinking about it before and during that game. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll be worried about guys sniffing around that knee.
This is professional sports, not the PAL or even collegiate ball.
As an NFL player, you damn well better be trying to embarrass the team you’re opposing.

Yeah. How thoughtful of him to record a message and have some lackey dial a phone and play it.
Amazingly thoughtful. That’s why I vote for every candidate that cares enough about me to call and shoot the breeze.
The only thing illegitimate here is you fike mlorio. It has been stated a million times the tapes were not used during the game in which they were taped. Do some research on the issue before you post baseless comments. How do you feel about the steriod steelers of the 70′s?
The Jets beat the Pats in NE the last 2 out of three years so to say losing to the Jets is embarrassing is silly.
That people are making a fuss out of this is silly. One player out of 53 speaks out and the media makes it seems that the whole team is popping off. Are the other 52 talking trash. The media is reaching for stories and ratings. Maybe they’d be happy with the bland Patriot answes.
Rex Ryan simply stated that he won’t back down. Is that trash talk?
More concerned with talking? Quit that BS Florio. Players talk during locker room interviews. That the only place they truly have tim eto talk, unless you’re FerryMan and Ochocinco.
You guys are such drama queens.
“WWE”, “Too much time talking and no preparing”, quit the media created hype as if it’s a distraction.

A moment of silence, a conceding genuflection, and a yielding kissing of the rings will suffice. Show some respect. Boy.
after they win the Super Bowl in week 2, do they go to the pro bowl in week 3?
“Right. Winning the game equates to embarrassing the other team.”
Um, Florio… What do you think the Pats were doing in ’07? They kept passing, going for TDs when they were up by 40+ in the 4th quarter. They embarrassed the other team, and for every game except the one that mattered, it worked for them. Then they got embarrassed themselves.
The Jets have been embarrassed by the Pats for the past eight home games against them… what on earth is the matter with wanting to turn the tables on them?
Is this what you want to hear from them?
“Well, we’ve been annihilated the past few games against them, so we’re gonna go out there and try to squeak out a win, and if we’re lucky, we’ll win by a field goal, maybe! C’mon everyone, ‘win by a point,’ on three!”
“WIN BY A POINT!”
All that talking didn’t seem to distract the Jets from trouncing the Texans last week… I know the Texans aren’t the Patriots, but some people were/are picking the Texans to be a playoff team this year. Maybe the Jets just feed off the trash talk.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
What a difference a year (or 2 ) makes! In 2007, after “Spygate”, everyone said that NE was out there trying to embarrass everyone.
And they all said that scoring points excessively was running up the score. Poor sportsmanship. Low class…………..
Now, a Jets fan, of all people, is saying that a team should have the goal of embarrassing their opponent. Classic. I am not disagreeing with your assessment NYJF, but it is funny how people pick and choose when it is ok to try to embarass your opponents, and when it isnt ok………..
Because we all know, that “if” NE goes into the Meadowlands (not allowed to call it Giants Stadium when the Jets are playing there, LMFAO) and puts a royal beat down on NY, you will be at the front of the line calling them classless for running up the score….. I am not saying NE is going to beat them down, just saying, it isnt ridiculous to think that Belichick and Brady might still have a chip on their shoulder for the Jets. In 2007 they won in NY, and then everyone thought a beat down was coming in December, but that was a rainy/snowy/windy game, p[reventing the beat down. Last year, no Tom Brady. So it is fair to say, NE might be using this week to give NY what they wanted to give them in 2007…………
Sounds like they’re trying hard to convince themselves rather than the Patriots. If they were doing a good job then they’d let their actions speak louder than words (i.e. their opponents this week). Still it’s refreshing to have a dash of Junior High macho in the NFL courtesy of a team that’s clearly scared to death of their neighbors to the north.
The bottom line is NE lost 5 probowl def. players and the JETS gained a bunch. brady is coming off a big injury and they have no running game. the Jets are feeling the switch in power and they are speaking about it, also the are preparing but they are speaking the truth.. with out ne being able to tape other teams they lose their edge. you can only say ne will win for so long until another team knocks them down and the Jets are team to do it and the time is now they have the players and the coaching staff and ne only has the past. Jets win big 23 – 10… brady might get hurt in this game because they dont have the o-line to stop the blitz
This is going to be soooo funny!!! I really can’t wait.
I’m not a New England fan, I’m a sorry Lions fan. Now that is sad hey.
To:NY Jets
Keep on talking. You haven’t done anything for years. You are about to get demolished. And you deserve to. You’re simply not in the same league as the Patriots yet. Good teams know to shut the hell up. Ever notice that the only teams talking is you and Ochocrappo. Neither one of you are going to be very happy after Sunday, period. Do your talking on the field losers.
And, to all you idiots still talking about the Patriots being cheaters, give it a rest already. All teams did it, whether you want to admit your team is a cheater also or not. Every team did i, every team looks for a way to get an advantage. The only reason it’s a big deal with the Ptriots is because they got sold out by Mangini. Every other team was looking to hide tapes the moment it happened.
Keep on hating on them. It only fuels it for them. But at least make the playoffs and beat them before you start acting like you’re so good, ok Jets.
Until then, you’re just no better than my lions.
Florio, I just read your prediction on MSNBC that the Pats are going to beat the Jets Sunday. Who the hell do you think you are? Don’t you know? The Jets have already won that game and they are going to destroy Tom Brady’s knee! And if you don’t believe that prediction Rex and his gang of Asshats will tell you so.
10x a day.
Eventually they’ll will themselves into believing it.
You guys realize that this is an entertainment business, and the Jets talking some smack just keeps everyone interested.
The Jets are taking this game seriously and their fans appreciate a little passion from the players. But if you think they all sit around at meetings thinking of new ways to take a verbal jab at the Patriots, I think you are mistaken.
The Jets have an air of confidence and aren’t afraid to let people know it. I think, if anything, it’s the kind of change the organization needs after Mangini tried to go mini-Belicheck on us.
Let them talk all they want. If they lose, they lose. If they win, then they win.
Florio–Love the website and have been reading for a while but I must say when it comes to how you cover the Jets with such biased opinions has forced me to finally register and tell you how completely moronic your statements are.
Have you even read the comments Kerry Rhodes made?? They really were not that bad. Should he have said those words? No probably not, but each and every week every team in the NFL is looking to win they’re game and do so in convincing fashion. Rhodes simply stated the obvious. Again, there was no need for him to light a bigger fire under the Patriots.
Now for the Jenkins Super Bowl comment….Florio are you honestly saying that it is ok for players and teams to not prepare for each game like its the Super Bowl?? Jenkins NEVER said it was THE Super Bowl only that they are treating it like it is, meaning that the entire team will prepare with the same focus and intensity that they would if their next game WAS the Super Bowl. I for one would want my team to treat EVERY GAME like it was the Super Bowl and you should too.
fike mlorio., You are an idiot. You keep spewing that tired crap. I know you’re a Stealer fan and with the steroid tarnished trophies, you got nothing to say. Hey, Goofy, your last two SB wins were gifts from the officials.
You just can’t stand the fact that your team was overpowered at the line of scrimmage with each win in those AFC Championship games. That’s right Mary, overpowered! My guys beat your guys’ asses at the L.O.S. Suck on that, loser.
If the Jets will ever have a good chance to beat the Patriots this is the week. After revamping the defense by cutting the older veterans and their leadership and adding a younger and unproven crop of starters the Patriots should be vulnerable. If you add into the equation losing defensive rookie of the year and signal caller Mayo the Jets have a prime opportunity to win this game.
The real issues will surface if after all the big swaggering talk the Jets have done they fail to win this game.
@ Bill Cowher’s Chin
The New York Jets caught New England cheating on our turf, reported them and took a first round pick away from Patriots for it.
If the arch-rival of your team, and your mentor, tried to cheat you and your team on your home field and you knew you could cost them a first round pick for their dishonesty, you would just let it go? Be the “bigger man” and let it go?
We never complained about running up the score. We were pissed off because the Patriots cheated and we play them twice a year. Naturally one has to think in that situation “did they cheat before?”
And if you read Kerry’s words, he said he wanted to embarrass New England.
This is all blown out of proportion. I want my defense to be as psyched for this game as possible. Because the man wants to embarrass his arch rival at his job, one of the most competitive jobs in the world (professional sports), people are making a big stink.
NYJS: Those 5 Pro Bowlers who were traded/retired were the same ones that everyone said were too old, losing a step, over the hill, etc. Now that they have moved on and are replaced with younger, faster players you really think they are going to get torn up by a rookie QB going against Belichick? Sanchez was confused against a Texan’s defense… I watched that game and Sanchez should have been picked at least twice more.
Pats offense matches up better against Jets D so unless Sanchez will keep up the score without making mistakes, forget about it.
Just claiming you’re associated with the Jets somehow is embarrassing enough
More Florio-Ryan hatred.
Clearly he is “bad for the game”. That’s why the Jets-Pats game will garner the highest ratings of any Week 2 game. Yeah it’s primetime, but even if it weren’t, make no mistake.
This is the game of the week, entirely due to Rex Ryan.
Yup…. dude is terrible for the league. Many feel that way about you, Lord Florio.
In my never-humble opinion…. both of you guys are pretty damn good for the game.
That’s my 10 cents (you can pick up 2 off the sidewalk).
There is no lower form of life than a NY Jets fan.
A bunch of uneducated smarmy group of losers to ever grace the great planet earth.
Do the genetic gene pool a favor and STOP REPRODUCING!!!
Thank You and have a nice day going through dumpsters looking for your next meal:)
Just words. Talking on Tuesday doesn’t get it done on Sunday.
I’m sure the League will want to read the comments about going after Brady’s knee more than anything else.
Which I guess is why coaches like to say upper body… lower body…

This post has so many flaws i dont know where to start. 1st this DUMBASS says NE has no Running game, check the stats DUMBASS they where ranked 4th in the nfl last yr in rushing and they added another back to the group. Next you say they have no O line, Brady dropped back 53 times mon nt and was sacked 1 time, the no O line thing is almost a dumb as people saying there D is old, get ur facts in order. DUMBASS!!!!!

I thought the Jets/Pats game was still scheduled for 1pm. Has it been changed to prime time?
Obviously Rhodes is not bad for the league. Sometimes football players make silly comments, like Kris Jenkins comparing the 2nd game of the season to a Super Bowl. I think Rhodes is getting off a lot easier for his comments than any Patriot would if one of Belichick’s players had made the comment, both from the media, fans, and the league office; but I think in general people are treating Rhodes bluster pretty much as they should treat the bluster of any NFL player. Just another dumb@ss wealthy NFL player running his mouth — happens all the time. No big deal.
Does no one realize that the taping thing was not a big deal!? They taped from an area where they weren’t allowed to. Quit using it as an excuse. We have a better record post-spygate than before it. Just cuz the Jets beat the Texans does not mean that the have already won the Superbowl. We will see waht happens on Sunday.
…We were pissed off because the Patriots cheated and we play them twice a year. Naturally one has to think in that situation “did they cheat before?”…
And now we all know that the Jets have broken rules (cheated) very recently. That is why current and former members of the Jets management were just fined, because of their recent cheating ways. Of course, they were not fined nearly enough, and they should have had multiple draft picks taken away for their cheating, but since Goodell is a coward and the Jets are so close to NFL HQ being a New Jersey team, Goodell went easy on them. Still we are all left to wonder…how many times have the Jets cheated before, and how will they be cheating this week?
The Jets defense is a Monster that got changed to cover retard defense a lil over halfway through the season last year by the idiot that got booted. That stupid change of course was part of their dramatic drop out of a playoff hope last year.
Mr Ryan here has reversed that stupidity and the Jets D are going to swarm Brady like the Giants did.
Ah the Giants defense the only team that had a brain that u ATTACK Brady not COVER. You do remember those final seconds of the Attack right? Alford flying through the air with Brady under his arm driving him 5 yards backwards onto his back.
And the ever classy Belicheat leaving his team on the field before the game was over to go cry in the locker room. Belicheat is the Highest of class.
You all ever see Porky’s? Belicheat looks just like Beulah Balbricker. Is it just a coincidence?
what’s hilarious here is everyone saying how big of a joke the Jets are, that talk is cheap, that they haven’t done anything, that we’ll see what happens Sunday…
you’re right! talk IS cheap, and it’s all any of you idiots does on here.
ever notice that no Jets fan actually says they think they’ve already won the super bowl or expects to blow out the pats? sanchez and ryan are 1-0. it’s progress…. we will see what happens sunday. our expectations are pretty low, given our recent history, but it’s nice to hear some trash talk and confidence for once.
it’d also be nice if all the haters (especially the lions fans, for christ’s sake, at least the jets are trying to win) waited till AFTER the jets have lost to start ripping them apart.
Listen Pat fans have short memories..they cheered for the DIRTIEST player in the league in HArrison..and maybe Rhodes will take over the mantel..and if he does…GREAT….
Pat fans are lower that cockroaches……and Belichick is a SCUNBOOG……it is going to be so great to bust any Pats fans balls that has the guts to show up there..

WHAT AN ASSININE STATEMENT..the PATS cheated during a game…and in the Super Bowl against the Rams..the Jets did not list an injury..like the Pats do every week..the league fined them to set an example…but that compared to taping in game is something even an IDIOT pat fan should understand…..and to be honest..I hope the Jets go after Brady hard..and get a cheap one in early…even if penalized…set the tone…it will be good for the league

It’s funny how Pats fans say “Enough with the cheating talk!” as if the whole majority of football fans are ready to put it behind them, and any further mention of the cheating that took place is verboten.
Got news for you: That attitude doesn’t exist outside of New England. The rest of us (even fans of teams who barely ever play the Pats) definitely remember, and we think it’s very pertinent.
So stop acting like you’re “suffering” these comments, and be angry at your beloved coach for breaking the rules in the first place. Or show some humility and say “Okay, we cheated, but this post has nothing to do with that.” — something I’ve yet to see a Pats fan do here.
