Rivers gets a taunting fine

There was a moment on Monday night when Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers apparently mistook Raiders defensive tackle Gerard Warren for Jay Cutler.

Rivers taunted Warren, drawing a penalty.

Rivers also has drawn a fine.

So the Chargers quarterback will be diverting $7,500 of his new-contract money to the Human Fund, and hopefully he has finally learned not to act like a jerk, on national television or otherwise.

He is a jerk and if the Giants had taken him he would have either gotten his butt kicked or cut
I am so glad we do not have this shithead playing for us
and Eli’s fans buy tickets unlike the whine and chesse crowd in SD

    Actually,
    If you knew anything,
Rivers Shouted “Stop on the whistle”
After Warren was going for his legs after the play.
The raiders just took his center, Nick Hardwick, out of the game the play earlier after a delay of play penalty in which the defensive end kept going after the whistle was blown. And resulted in his Center getting severely hurt because the DE doesnt know how to play football.
    Do some research.

Rivers is a jerk? When did talking smack in football become something bad? Rivers plays the game with a lot of heart and he’s very competitive. I’d love to have Rivers as my QB.
You called Channing Crowder a “douchebag” in another article. Guess you just hate people who talk, huh Florio?

  6. Hooded swan says: Sep 18, 2009 10:10 PM

The delay of play penalty was called on Rivers for throwing the ball at Warren, not on Raiders DE Trevor Scott when he, unfortunately, landed on Hardwick’s leg while attempting to sack Rivers. And don’t take my word for it. Download the official NFL Gamebook at:
    http://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/54482/OAK_Gamebook.pdf
The easiest way to find the play is to search for the word “delay” using your Acrobat file reader.

Rivers was pissed because on the play before this one Sey gave him a karate chop to the neck while he was laying on the ground.
Sey will mess Cassell up this week. I bet Cass breaks down and starts crying

    @ cameron
Who did the NFL fine? Warren? Other Raiders D-linemen? Wait, nope, it was Rivers.
I think Florio is an awful reporter in his own way some of the time, with questionable research at the forefront of my mind. However, here’s my advice to you:
    Read the headline.

Wow, have you so soon forgotten the 2005 NFL draft? It was Eli, not Rivers, that weaseled his way onto a team he wanted to play for.
And making fun of San Diego for not selling out games? Last time I checked, NYC and the surrounding suburbs are at least 7x more populated than the area around San Diego.
Rivers may be the only QB from that 1st round class without a superbowl yet, but because he outperforms the other two consistently in the regular season, I’m willing to say he’s at least as good as Big Ben and Eli.

  11. Mark0226 says: Sep 18, 2009 10:28 PM

Um, it was Greg Ellis (check out the video at NFL.com). It was on a dead play (SD timeout from sidelines) whistles blowing like crazy and Ellis continues to drive through #66 Jeromy Clary’s legs, and yes it was after TWO offensive linemen were already knocked out of the game (Hardwick and Vasquez). I mean, I’ve heard of playing through the whistle, but on a DEAD play? Can’t say that I blame Rivers for voicing his opinion to Ellis to stop when you hear the whistle.

He wasn’t fined for what he said, he was fined for throwing the ball near the player after the play was over.
I could care less what he says in the heat of battle, but basically spiking the ball like he did next to the player was stupid.
You Chokers fans make it seem like the Raiders intentionally hurt Vasquez and Hardwick. Players get hurt in the game and if you can’t handle it, watch another sport.
Statistically he’s better than Eli or Big Ben, but he’s had as talented if not a more talented team and hasn’t won a Super Bowl?
The regular season doesn’t mean squat. It’s who wins the games is what matters. Big Ben won the Super Bowl in his 2nd season behind a dominant rushing attack and a great defense.
Does that sound familiar Chokers fans? Rivers has had LT and a great defense. The Chokers on paper have had one of the best teams in the NFL during the last 4 years.
Eli Manning had the same situation too when he won a Super Bowl ring.
Why hasn’t Rivers won a ring and he’s been on better teams?

Where does the money from fines go? The NFL makes big bucks yet threatens black outs if ticket quota isn’t made.
Every single sunday the NFL makes more money from the players in these fines.

  19. YrkGian2079 says: Sep 18, 2009 11:04 PM

I was a little surprised about that penalty, because at first it didn’t seem like taunting it just seemed like Rivers was trying to get his mouth piece off the ground. Then I notice he had said something, but It didn’t seem like it was in a cocky way of taunting but in an angry way of what had happened. I think he was pissed because when he tried to reach down to get his mouth piece the player almost landed on his arm. I don’t think it was taunting.

I almost feel sorry for the Chargers having to play Bmore after the whupping they took last week.
I dont think they will recover. They will be lucky to win 6 games this year

  21. Raiders757 says: Sep 18, 2009 11:16 PM

You have got to be kidding me! Sure, what he did deserved a flag, and he got one, but this is absurd. I’m assuming this is resulting from him spiking the ball on the ground near a player after the whistle.
Damn, the league is getting a little picky here.

My guess is the pus** that calls himself a head coach.
Players play the game, but Chargers looked very unprepared last year on east coast trips. Chargers had most travel miles last year, but professionals need to shop up and play.
Watch when they get a lead, offense goes limp. 3 runs and punt.

Raider fans are just mad because they lost. Again. For the 12th strait time. to their rivals.
It wasn’t the motion of what Rivers did. It wasn’t what he said (“stop on the whistle”). It was the fact that he spiked the ball near the player. He had a right to do it too. If someone at my job was reckless enough to jeopardize my career I’d have a little more than that to tell him. Rivers had hurt his knees on different occasions and it shakes you up to see a DL flying at you after the whistle had been blown.
Rivers maybe should have not said anything but I don’t blame him for doing it. I think 90% of the people on this forum would have reacted the same way if in Rivers’ shoes.

And you’re going to blame Rivers for this? In 2007, the guy tore his ACL and played through it trying to help his team win. How can you possibly blame Rivers for the Chargers not making the Super Bowl?

So let me get this straight…Rivers is a jerk for yelling at a defender during a competitive football game when the defender almost took out his knees after the whistle? And this is coming from a guy who makes his living talking smack on a football blog. Florio, just stick to reporting the news and try not to hurt yourself attempting to do any real “analysis.”

Rivers will deside to get a Bowl of Chunky Soup.

Philip Rivers has acted this way since his days at NC State. As a Maryland Terp fan I saw him play four times agaisnt the Terps (He never beat us by the way) and he acted liked a spoiled child in every game. He needs to grow up and knock off the bully act…..

People who live in glass houses Florio, people who live in glass houses. Maybe you ought to take the time to read your columns over the last few years and then take a damn good look in the mirror.
BTW, you don’t know what Rivers said on the field, but we all know what you write here everyday. But then there always has been a different standard for internet and media hacks as opposed to everyone else. The day you clean up your act, will be the day that you have any credibility when it comes to commenting other individuals conduct.

Nevermind that he plays in the worst division in the NFL and more or less gets 6 free wins a year automatically, but they STILL only managed to go 8-8 last season(5-3 at home). The guy has a massive amount of talent around him, and his stats are good, but I’ve personally never seen a Championship given to a player with the greatest individual stats.
Ask the Eagles and their empty trophy case just how far individual stats from a QB can take you

  37. macD18 says: Sep 19, 2009 10:35 AM

Yup, Steeler-lady. Kinda like the G-Men beat the Steelers at home last year? As well as Tampa, Dallas Green Bay and Patriots all on the road the year before that?
Rivers is a good QB, but Manning and Big Ben have def impressed me more. And yeah, Rivers could benefit from a little less talk now and then.

  38. Bigbluefan says: Sep 19, 2009 12:15 PM

Yes Eli got out of SD because he wanted to play for a real team not the AFC Worst
And we are glad he did and the only stats that matter are wins and losses and of course winning it all
Everyone bows to lord brett and his stats but after all these years how many times did he win it all
Dan Marrino Great stats no SB
A true QB does more then throw passes he rallys his team and does what ever it takes to win
Stats dont pay the bills wins do
Look Eli just resigned for more the Rivers so that should say it all
