Blache on Haynesworth: He's not "Superman"

Getting a "$100 million" contract has its price.

Folks will be watching Redskins Albert Haynesworth very closely all year, and looking for any signs of weakness.

Already Haynesworth has got attention for the number of snaps he's taking (he was over 70% in Week One) and his effort on those snaps.

And by most accounts, Haynesworth played quite well in the opener, even if he wasn't dominating.

Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache spoke forcefully this week that Haynesworth is only one man.  He took offense to the suggestion that Haynesworth was partly responsible for linebacker London Fletcher's high tackle total in the opener.

"Albert's a good player, but let's not make him King Kong," Blache said. "He's not Superman."

Blache's approach makes sense; Haynesworth can't save the Redskins on his own.  But Jason Reid of the Washington Post rightly points out that the team's front office built Haynesworth up as someone that could "make things easier" on the players around him.

Blache and the players may resent that storyline, especially since Blache usually prefers a defense with low profile players that buy into his system.

The addition of Haynesworth to the Washington defense, however, has guaranteed we'll be paying attention very closely.

Okay, the Redskins gave $100,000,000 to a guy they say isn't Superman. I've got a name for the Redskins....Superdumb.

He did look good. I don't know how anyone can justify that contract though.
Money would have been better spent upgrading the offense.

For "$100 million" you better play like Superman!

Quick note -last sentence doesn't make any sense.

Not a lot of people are talking about the fact that Brandon Jacobs was kep in check against the Giants. I recognize that Bradshaw got his fair share of yards but I think you have to consider the run defense a win.

The Redskins payed 100 million for King Kong, I payed about $7.50. I think we both want our money back.

Yeah they stopped Brandon but all that did was allow us to pass all day

Should have spent the money on a QB
Oh thats right you tried and they would not come maybe lord brett next year

Anyone smart enough to log onto this site knows that contract will never actually reach 100mil.

The article is correct. He's not "Superman".

If he was a cartoon character, I'd say he's closer to being "Fat Albert" than "Superman"...

    :P

LMFAO, nice work Washington, you blew it with free agency again!

Obviously, no player is literally "Superman", but if you pay a guy THAT much money, he better be the closest thing to Superman that the NFL has ever seen......

Washington's strength last year was defense, and their weakness was offense. So Washington decides to spend a fortune on a guy that will take them from a top 10 defense, to a top 8 defense. WOW, nice work.

They should have taken that money and got themselves a QB, a and a couple of pass catchers.

We all kmow that defense wins Championships, just ask any Patriots fan or Giants fan, but Washingtons defense was good enough to win a SB last year. It was their offense that shit the bed......

florio didnt you spend the summer telling everyone that the contract is actually worth alot less than 100 mil? now you overlook that and call him a 100 million dollar man to get a cheesy post out of it.

  12. Sceptorx says: September 19, 2009 9:02 PM

Yeah he's getting 44 mil, to all the gullible here.

Actually, they were ranked fourth overall last season.

For 100 million he doesn't have to play like Superman, just John Randle.

  15. trickbunny says: September 20, 2009 1:07 PM

Ha! The Redskins DC just compared Haynesworth to an ape.

  16. UrineTrouble says: September 22, 2009 9:18 PM

    How badly was Stafford overpaid?
How badly was Reggie Bush overpaid?
