Jeff Garcia guaranteed two weeks salary

Jeff Garcia can go ahead and splurge on a big ticket gift for his former Playboy playmate wife this week because he's guaranteed one more paycheck from the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team will pay Garcia's salary next week even if Michael Vick is activated and Donovan McNabb is healthy enough to play against the Chiefs. On Sportscenter, Schefter said that meant Garcia's spot on the roster is secure but that seems like an unsafe assumption.

If McNabb is healthy and ready to play next week, it would be surprising if the Eagles devoted four roster spots to quarterbacks. If anything, the schedule, not the salary, could keep Garcia in Philly for another week. The Eagles have a bye following their date with the Chiefs which may affect the way they handle McNabb's return, especially if Kevin Kolb shows he can handle the job against the Saints on Sunday.

The only way McNabb comes back early is if the team get in to an early hole that risks their season. Kolb will start this game and maybe even be spelled a bit by Garcia. You can guarantee that Garcia will be taking over the offense for the 4 or 5 weeks necessary if Kolb can't do it, while McNabb heals. I really don't see them rushing him back in with broken ribs. At best it's a one or two game kind of move because they'll just get broken again. Where are they then? As far as Vick goes he's a ways away from leading the offense. He's only had a few weeks with the team and he was never the best reader of defenses. He'll have to demonstrate in practice that he's not only got a grasp of the offense, but he's capable of making sufficient reads to take over. That progression is entirely up to him and you can bet we're not going to know a thing about it until it's ready. Like everything else in football it's what happens on the field that matters. If Garcia is in and he's playing well enough they'll keep him out there and not risk the switch.

Todays game against the Saints will determine a LOT of issues at QB. Mainly we will see if we have a good backup in Kolb. Vick wont be here next year (unless McNabb isn't) and we need to know if Kolb is our future.
In five hours Philadelphia will have an answer on Kolb.
Will he be a hero or boo material?

I hope Kolb shows he can throw the ball a little bit without being intercepted. Then for the next 2 weeks we try to trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick. Let Garcia play on this team the whole year. Maybe sign him next year or draft one of the young studs coming out in the draft next year (Bradford, Mccoy, Tebow, Clausen).

I'd much rather have Garcia as #2 and Kolb as #3 with Ookie ... i don't want Ookie playing QB for this team. Based on the O-Line's performance last week, any QB can look good back there. I just don't see Vick's value to the team other than marketing.

Garcia is the best QB on that sorry excuse for a football team, and I'll be happy to see him go.
