Give the Raiders credit: Their 13-10 win over Kansas City was a game they absolutely would have lost in prior years and they found a way despite looking doomed many times on their game-winning drive.
The Raiders offense went three-and-out six times, and gained fewer than 100 yards of total offense before their final possession.
Raiders coach Tom Cable didn’t consider pulling JaMarcus Russell despite his 4-of-17 start to the day. “The ball was coming out (of my hand) pretty funny the first few drives,” Russell said.
WR Todd Watkins’ first career catch came at an opportune time. “It was like a dream,” Watkins said.
Bad sign for Chiefs morale: they say the heart-breaking loss reminded them of last year.
Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star called Todd Haley’s coaching display “an embarrassment” and “as bad as anything I’ve seen in the NFL.” (Whitlock honeymoons don’t last long, huh?)
Matt Cassel made a few good throws, but his first Chiefs start wasn’t one to remember.
Another bad sign for the Chiefs: Bobby Wade, signed earlier in the week, led the team in receiving.
Kansas City wasted a fine defensive effort in the loss.
JaMarcus Russell is possibly the worst starting QB in the history of the NFL. Personally, I’ve never seen an NFL quarterback look worse, and I’ve been watching the NFL for over 30 years.
JaMarcus Russell = Ryan Leaf = Andre Ware = Akili Smith
With six wins since the start of the 2007 season, this (not the Lions) is the worst Nfl franchise.
If you play fantasy football, Bobby Wade might be a good pick-up. Apparently he’s the one guy on the Chiefs who can catch. Matt Cassell is the QB. The Chiefs will be behind most of the time in games.
A Win is A Win
More bad news for the Chiefs…they play the entire NFC East over the next 4 weeks
Raiders win!
As a Chiefs fan I was really let down by this loss. Special Teams letting the ball roll into the endzone when a player stands by and watches it. Last play of the half when Cassell throws to a RB out of the backfield and he gets tackled in bounds and the clock expires. And stupid penalties! As for the Raiders, they have alot of young talent, but Russell is terrible. He had open receivers all day and couldnt hit them at all. They should have kept Garcia, they would be alot better team.
@sullijo
Dude, leave the stats to the adults you have no clue what you’re even talking about. How did you come up with the Raiders have only had 6 wins since the start of the 2007 season? Then follow that up with that makes them worse then the Lions.
The Raiders won 4 games in 2007, 5 games in 2008, and 1 game this year that makes 10 games since the start of the 2007 season. As for the Lions well they won 7 games in 2007 and haven’t won any since. So by that count the Raiders have 10 wins and the Lions have 7 that doesn’t make the Raiders the worst amoung the two teams.
As for you commenting on any team just STFU. Every team goes through bad times even the Patriots except for this decade had bad times and there has still only been one team that can almost say they have been consistant year in and year out and that’s the Steelers.
So coming on here and commenting on how bad the Raiders are well you need to grow a brain and turn ESPN off and quit looking like every moron that think their comments are funny on this site.
@Jeff303: Really? never seen an NFL QB look worse? Ummm he’s won 3 out of his last 4 games. He’s 2 games into his 2nd full season as a starter. And the last 2 games he’s lead us to lead changing TD’s with less than 2:30 to play in the game. Now, I’m not saying he’s great….but if he starts the game like he finishes them he very well could be!
And sullijo with 19 straight losses that would still make the Lions currently the worst in the NFL! Chiefs still had 2 more wins than them last year!
Jason Whitlock, now that’s a column that would never appear in the Denver Post in reference to a poor showing by the Broncos or their Head Coach. The Broncos beat writers suck up to the team instead of being objective and making comments like these when they’re deserved. So far the Broncs beat writers don’t have to be very objective or critical since the team has unexpectedly won two games. But Brandon Marshall, like Bowe & Bradley, has spent far too much time on the sidelines watching.
But criticism of the Broncos by a Denver Post beat writer, not going to happen, even when it’s deserved.
Isnt it a pleasant surprise that the Chiefs have become the Raiders? Enjoy your season Chiefs. Even as a Bronco fan I see that we are making progress and we have legit NFL players on our roster.
You guys? Quit drafting LSU honks…..I mean..keep drating LSU honks. Dorsey, Bowe, and Jackson…..hmmm. Loving it.
stabler would always look like crap the first half… then he would go in….have a couple hi-balls… and lead a comback victory
maybe russell went back to the bench before that last drive……had a couple donuts…..and bamm..lights out!!!!
Russell sucked today. But he’s 24. He has something like a 2-1 TD to INT ratio in his last 16 games.
He’s 24. He’s started about 20 games.
Eli Manning still sucked at 20 games.
So did Drew Brees.
And Troy Aikman.
They looked just as confused and threw many many many many more INTs.
Obviously, Jeff hasn’t seen much football.
Didn’t see Jake Delhomme at the end of last year or 1st week of this year. The 4 INTs and all that.
Obviously Jeff didn’t see Jamarcus Russell beat the Texans and Bucs at the end of last year, throwing for over 200 yards each game, and killing those teams’ post-season chances.
The kid is 24. Guys like Cutler, Schaub, and Rodgers are 26, 27 or so. Huge difference.
OK – so can anyone please explain to me how the Texans Jacoby Jones’ supposed catch was ruled a TD on Sunday and Murphy’s was not?
Anyone care to elaborate on the differences between the two? Anyone? And I’m looking straight at you, Flowerio – but we all know you’re too gutless to mention anything negative about Jones’ call. Did the officials get that one right, Flowerio?
All you Raider fans defending JaMarcus Russell are delusional. I don’t know what you saw out there yesterday but I saw one of the worst starting QB’s ever to take the field. The only reason JaMarcus won the game for you is because he was going up against a pathetic prevent defense that Gradkowski could have shredded and was aided by a BS roughing call after he somehow managed to sack himself.
Oh yeah, how’s that “vuhtical” game working out? DHB, JLH and the rest of those fools you call a receiving corp are definitely a force to be reckoned with.
J Russell is greater than Big Ben, Raiders fans are much stronger and loyal than Pittsburgh fans.
And Russell doesnt rape.
Raiders own the Steelers.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brewster,
1.) Are you an idiot? The DP has been all over the Broncos since Cutler left. Woody, Kisla, etc. Klis has done more defending.
2.) Brandon Marshall is sitting on the sideline because he doesn’t finish routes, he is poorly blocking in the running game, and he drops passes. the last time I checked, receivers are supposed to catch the ball.
3.) The writers for the DP have predicted anywhere from a 5-11 to a 3-13 season for the team. That seems to me like they are on board with the current program.
4.) This article was written by a person known for this sort of sensationalized self-gratification.
UFL,
that’s the stupidest thing ever written on this website.
YO, Jeff Garcia is a BUM, how is it that every clown is calling for the Great Jeff Garica when the last time I check good not great Quarterbacks were at a premium and this freakin guy has been without steady full time Starting QB work for almost two to three years. Since the Phila. Igles used him until the real QB came back (2007) to take back his job after injury. He is a snake, in Philly he tried real hard to undermine and under cut Donavan (McRib) McNabb and he was on raido and television trying to create a cry in Raidernation for is sorry candy arm a55. He has not won a a single ring, can not keep a starting job anywhere and is defined career wise as just not good enough. Movin the Chain guys have him walking on water, but he stinks, he is the unversial blanket, throw away, second or third string has been. Andy Reid knows, that is why he is 2nd or maybe even 3rd string. SCRUB!!!!
I’m starting to agree that Jamarcus is Jabad. The simplest throws are hard for him. I think he’s taken a step back because he sure doesn’t look anything like he did last year. Maybe we can trade for Culpepper. I’d even take Frerotte at this point. I’m afraid the running game will never get going with this kind of quarterbacking. And what’s worse is the fact that there are no good QB’s in next years draft.
J.R. was awful yesterday! But the worse starting QB in history? You’re kidding right? You’ve been watching football for 30 years huh? Well you haven’t been watching (remember Marc Wilson, Todd Marinovich to name a few Raider duds). Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams, Jim Plunkett were all bums before winning Super Bowls. Need more perspective? Look at the Super Bowl winning teams during the past 15 years lets say. What do most have in common? They either drafted their QB and groomed them, or acquired them very early in their careers and groomed them. The exceptions in most recent years are Dilfer and Brad Johnson. The rest..big Ben, Peyton, Eli, Brady, Warner, Elway, Favre, Young, Aikman, etc. Were these guys always great? Did they not have dark days? Their organizations committed to them, built teams around them. It takes patience and resolve…like Cable showed yesterday (even I called for the hook!). It takes more than 1 year of good coaching, which I presume J.R. is getting right now. Do some research and look at the tutelage other successful young QBs have had. Its hard to believe right now, but he will get better.
Tom Cable will surpass Madden in greatness.
Tdk24: I agree that JaBustus looks like he has regressed this year and his lack of accuracy scares the hell out of me.
But I must say that Culpepper already played for the Raiders – remember? And it wasn’t that great.
Secondly, you ever hear of Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy? Both are very accurate passers and will be in next year’s draft, but neither will be going to the Raiders – JaBustus is there to stay…you don’t pay the 1st pick in the draft $60 million to draft another QB 4 years later.
Wow … as a Raider fan I can’t believe anyone is actually defending the Great JaMarcus. What a joke … this guy could not play in the CFL. Hello it’s his third season … Sanchez 2 games 2-0, Ryan and Flacco second year both 2-0 and Stafford who plays on the crappest team in the league has thrown TDs in each of his 2 games he has played.
Next excuse bad OL … LOL Aaron Rogers has been sacked 10 times already and he has no problems completing passes.
Next excuse bad coaching … LMAO JaMarcus still has not learn the whole playbook … yup it’s the coaches fault.
Try again … rookie WRS excuse … Favre and Culter have no problem throwing to rookie WRs.
Are we starting to get the pictures … excuses excuses and more excuses … face it he’s a bust. Even it takes him 6-7 years to develope into all- star he is still a #1 bust. $63 million for a player who is the worst QB in the league … now that’s a joke.
Russell is clearly superior to Big Barf.
Raiders 14-2 Steelers 5-11
Who had a worst QB rating ROMO-Amercias QB or JRUSS?
JRUSS did.
Who brought thier team back with two minutes left in the game?
JRUSS did.
Even though this was by far one of JRUSS’s worst games he didnt let it bother him and brought his team back.
I think ROMO needs to call JRUSS and ask him how to win games, even when things dont go your way.
I don’t care for Whitlock’s style but he’s right on about the Chefs. They had a W handed to them by an incompetent team and they lost it by being even more incompetent. That starts with the coach.
Jamarcus still needs time to develop. He finally has a good coach and some young talent around him. Tom Cable took over the team and turned it around. This year we should be 2-0 except for a another bs call by the league officials. The O and D lines dominated the chargers the whole game and came up short, but the raiders are back. How can you still the raiders a joke ater the last few games last year and the first two this year?
