Herschel Walker signs with MMA organization

Sweet! We’ve found someone to give Florio backup if he ever decides to visit Channing Crowder’s housing development.

Former Viking, Cowboy, Eagles and Giants running back Herschel Walker has signed with Strikeforce, a mixed-martial arts and kickboxing organization based in San Jose, California.

AOL Fanhouse has the story which quotes the 47-year-old Walker as saying, ”I will go in there and test myself against any 20-year-old. I know there will be naysayers and I’m fine with that. I want to prove to people who sit on a couch and don’t do anything but criticize other people [Is he talking to us? He's not talking to us, is he?] that, if you’re a true athlete or martial artist, you’re not old until you can’t get up and walk around anymore. …my plan at the age of 47 is to show the world I am still one of the best athletes as well.”

Walker is best remembered for being a singular force of nature during his college career at the University of Georgia, then signing with Donald Trump’s New Jersey Generals of the USFL. The defining moment of his good but not great NFL career was the trade that sent Walker from Dallas to the Minnesota Vikings on October 12, 1989. The deal involved 18 picks or players. The Cowboys used their share of the bounty to build a team that won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. The Vikings shipped him to Philly within three years.

A Strikeforce spokesman said Walker will most likely debut in 2010.

Awesome. I hope he kicks the crap out of all the 20somethings that he faces.

He was the real deal and should be considered for The HOF. Just because he went USFL , he was not ever considered a serious candidate. If ANY of the other playaz that came outta college got what he did at the time, they woulda high-tailed it, too. Herschel was a monster.

He’s gonna get his ass beat.

I was born in 1984, so to be honest, for me, “Wakjer is best remembered for being a singular force of crazyness during his stint on Donald Trump’s reality show The Apprentice. Where, he was crazy.”
    Thank you.

This is sad. A 47 year old that has never fought MMA should not be allowed to fight. Yes he has a black belt in kung-fu or something but he’s never fought in the ring.
Rany Couture should be stopped from fighting and he is experienced and not as old as Walker.
    This will end badly.

8200 yards and 61 tds is not really HOF material…however i do hope he beats the hell out of canseco

Walker was a 6th Dan in Tae Kwon Do in the 90′s. he can kick some serious, umm, patootie.
Interesting difference between him and me, because when I was doing Karate Tournaments when I was 47 I had a hard time finding anyone in my age bracket willing to fight ‘full contact’. In one tournament they offered to let me fight in the 18-25 year old bracket. Hershel said, “I will go in there and test myself against any 20-year-old.” I however, said, “If you think I’m climbing into a ring with a 21 year old with something to prove, you’ve got another think coming.”

Walker will never make the HOF because teams didn’t know how/could not use him effectively.
He was best used in an I formation, giving him a head of steam when he hit the line. He was unstoppable in most cases when that happened.
What makes a running back great is being able to be used in multiple formations, being multi-dimensional. That was NOT Walker by any stretch of the imagination and proves he is NOT HOF worthy!

So, Which Herschel is choosing to do the MMA? I wonder if he passed it by any of the other Walker’s that reside in his head.

Well considering Fedor just joined strikeforce, I hope herschel isnt anywhere close to being past 205, if he ends up in heavyweight he in one and done. Eh I take that back.. LHW.. any weight he done. Strike force isnt even the UFC its a level below but he would still get murdered.

I hear that one of his other personalities is looking to sign up as well; perhaps they can fight each other.

Hershel’s going to need a walker after this one.
    Bad, bad idea.

you do know that, aside from football, he was an olympian in bobsled, a 6th degree black belt in tae kwon do, and almost made the olympics as a sprinter?
he’s basically a 4 sport athlete, and at his peak, he was one of the best at each of those sports in the world.
also, he has a very unique training regimine that would allow him to stay in much better shape than any of us.
oh and all those people who make the multiple personality jokes…. “child, please.”

  18. CdnMike says: Sep 21, 2009 3:44 PM

    juggadore,
you do realize that he’s 47, right? Get serious!

  19. favrecansuckit says: Sep 21, 2009 3:48 PM

Tae Kwon Do is a horrible base for MMA, it’s techniques don’t translate, which is why no one in the sport trains in that disapline. I highly doubt Walker could make it out of the first round with anyone on Strikeforce’s roster at 205 lb or HWT, depending on what weight he would complete.

  20. dakotah says: Sep 21, 2009 3:48 PM

I’m sure he’s in better shape than 99.9% of all the 47 year olds out there. The problem is he will be going against 20 somethings that are in better shape than 98% of all the 20 somethings out there. Age eventually catches up to all of us. This is a bad idea.

  21. JSpicoli says: Sep 21, 2009 3:50 PM

Herschel can only compete if he gets Balco on the line.

You do know that he is 47 right? There are plenty of athletes out there that excelled at multiple sports at one time, but there is a time and place for everything. There is a reason he is not an olympic bobsledder anymore, not a world class sprinter anymore, and not playing football anymore. Dude is old(for those sports).
If he steps into a ring with a real trained quality mma fighter, and not a celebrity show, he has a good chance of having his head knocked right off his shoulders. I like Herschel.. I would hate to see that happen.

Walker absolutely deserves consideration for the HOF. It is the “Pro” football hall of fame, not NFL hall of fame.
As it stands, Walker is eighth on the NFL list of all-purpose yardage leaders. Add in his USFL numbers, and no professional football player has had more all-purpose yards than Walker.

  27. Hap says: Sep 21, 2009 5:21 PM

Don’t forget to add in his return yardage when doin yer calculations. He was feared, period.

Are the Vikings interested in a trade? Who’s his first fight? Kimbo Slice or Brian Bosworth?
