Packers-Bengals one-liners

The Bengals won in Green Bay 31-24, and the total team victory by Cincinnati was even more convincing than the final score indicates.

After recording only three sacks last year, DE Antwan Odom’s five-sack day felt like a dream.  He believes that adding weight has helped him this season.

LB Rey Maualuga forced two fumbles and a sack, including an awesome play where he practically decapitated Packers RB Ryan Grant.

RB Cedric Benson, who rushed for 146 yards and is playing the best football of his career, is a good example of the maturing Bengals.

Other things went wrong for the Packers, but their pass protection is clearly the team’s biggest issue.

WR Greg Jennings was enraged about the officiating, especially after the final sequence of the game, and let head linesman Mark Hittner know about it.

Green Bay’s loss was costly in a few ways: they may be without left tackle Chad Clifton (ankle) and safety Nick Collins (clavicle) next week.

The preseason potency of the Packers offense is a distant memory now.

The Packers’ special teams also contributed heavily to the loss.

Odom’s Adding weight was the key ?
Me thinks it twas the Packers crappy O line. Thompson has been trying to fix it since he’s been here.

Pretty weak of Jennings to rant at the refs after posting an 0-fer on the day. It looked like the refs could have called 4 or 5 for movement, so maybe Jennings was the closest to the sideline.
The Packers didn’t lose that game because of a late call. Their defense was ripped and the offensive line should be on their knees begging Rogers’ forgiveness.

    Fan_Of_ Four,
Thompson has been trying to fix the O-line since he was hired? Maybe, but he certainly hasn’t made it a top priority, that’s for certain – and it shows.
Anyhow, Green Bay’s pass protection is bad, but it’s still better than what Favre has to work with in Minnesota. He darned near was decapitated yesterday on a three-step dropback.
I think maybe Mac needs to incorporate a shorter passing attack a la Chilly, He’s certainly got the receivers to pull it off successfully.
Also, Rodgers held onto the ball too long and should have gone to check-downs and been more patient instead of looking for the home run.
Green Bay’s got way too many offensive threats not to win that division.

Hindsight is 20/20 but Tauscher and Clifton may have been the biggest impact players on offense that last 8 or 9 years. Those guys made the machine work….Without a good line, the guys that line up behind them are useless.

It’s the same thing every year.
Everyone says to not read too much into the preseason, yet there’s one team with low to mild expectations that looks good and everyone forgets it’s preseason and elevates expectations. Then the season starts and that team that looked so good in preseason looks like the average team everyone expected them to be before the preseason started.
Congrats Packers! You’re the winner of the 2009 Unrealistic-Expectations-Based-on-Domination-in-Meaningless-Preseason-Games trophy.

Odom put on 30 pounds so yeah that’s obviously gonna help, especially against a backup

  8. oruacat2 says: Sep 21, 2009 9:04 PM

    Random points:
    1) Only three of Odom’s sacks came against backup O-linemen
    2) It’s nice to have a pass-rush again. If teams start double-teaming Odom, I have no doubt Geathers will have an impact
    3) A lot of people snickered when the Bengals drafted punter Kevin Huber, but the kid really helped win the field-position battle (as did rooker PR Quan Cosby)
    4) Palmer will get better – the rust is fading and he’s redeveloping the rapport with his WRs
    5) Kudos to Cedric Benson – that move is looking better and better every day

    Really?
They had the same players last year and they went 6-10.

  11. NFLFanForever says: Sep 21, 2009 10:42 PM

Unless the Pack turn it around quick. They will become the most overrated team in the league.

Apparently the Fudge Packer fans can be added to the most delusional, arrogant fan list along with the Squeal/Kneelers, the Filthadelphians and wads from that arm pit of America called New England.
Too much cheese has been proven to clog the arterys leading to the brain.
You would be well well advised to remember that the Ravens this year will pick the apart the road kill called the NFL.
Give up now and save yourself a lot of un-needed grief.

    GobiasINC_1 ,
Well, maybe I’m simply guilty of hedging my bets. Seriously, though, that offense could be absolutely dominating with better O-line play and a bit better coaching and QB play. Yeah, yeah, them’s a lotta “if’s”.
I think NFC North is going to be one helluva division to follow the rest of the season.

TT has done a solid job building the Packers, but he’s really missed the boat on the offensive line. TT may actually need to talk to someone when it comes to drafting linemen because he just isn’t cutting the mustard there.

True enough. Last preseason, the Lions went 4-0.
I’m a huge Packers fan and even I can see the writing on the wall. The o-line sucks. Period. TT had better get it through his thick skull that without pass protection, the offence is basically a speed bump. I might add that a ZBS offense has basically no value when your boneheaded coach abandons the run midway through the first quarter.

  19. zangy says: Sep 22, 2009 8:10 AM

What about the Palmer sneak for a TD? I saw rather plainly on the replay that he fumbled before getting into the endzone but the side judge came rushing in to call it a TD. He never even crossed the goaline!

  20. blester01 says: Sep 22, 2009 9:39 AM

Packer fans, don’t loose your faith; you have a good team up there. The Bengals got lucky with the schedule that they played you without your starting DL to help plug the run, and then you lost your safety and LT during the game. Our Bengals are better than advertised and will surprise some teams this year, but without your key losses, we may not have been able to pull it off. I know it sucks (since we are typically the victims), but it is how the game is played.
On to Pittsburgh for us where we face a team with similar holes as GB, would be great if we can take advantage of it again and get another win.

  21. purpleguy says: Sep 22, 2009 9:49 AM

No worries cheesers, the Pack will crush the lousy and injury-riddled Rams, and all will be well with the world. Everyone got too hyped over the pre-season and are getting too hyped over one regular season loss. The Bengals don’t suck as bad as they did last year.
Just wait till Monday night’s game against the Vikes. With our two lousy O-lines, there will probably be an NFL record set for sacks in one game.

Ed Hockalugi needs to learn the meaning of the phrase “let ‘em play”. Pany ass calls all night.
That being said, Bengals beat us in all phases of the game. Agree that all is not lost but it’s looking pretty bleak. A win against the Rams will not right the ship. Evene if it it’s a total domination which somehow I doubt.
I was glad to see MM put the blame on himself during his last press conferrence. (Last year it was pad levels, this year it’s fundamentals). TT has no business picking lineman and this injury BS is becoming way to common.
No O-line, pourous defense, modereate at best kicker, predicatable play calling, idiots at linebackers—same crap as last year. That falls on coaches & front office. Without a miracle of some sort 8-8 at best.
    Thank God for Charles Woodson.

Perhaps those who think it was all Bert all the time in terms of winning a Super Bowl and in going 13-3 would like to explain how he also managed to be responsible for 8-8 and 4-12 seasons. I mean, that must’ve been all him too, right?

Hydra-go have your mom bake you some cookies or something. Geez, man, grow up & take a reality pill. Not all Packer fans are living in a green & gold tunnel & can see that this team continues to have the same old problems. Do you honestly still think we’ll be in Tampa? We looked like crap! Ochocinco’s doiong Lambeau Leaps and our linebackers are walking around with a glazed look in their eyes.
You make people like fan-of-four & 77347734 look brilliant. STFU!!!!
