Bidwill: An NFL team in L.A. "continues to be a priority"

As the NFL vacuum in Los Angeles continues to exist, nearly 15 years after it was first created, the president of a nearby franchise (relative to the rest of them) has said that the league still wants to put a team back in L.A.

Michael Bidwill of Arizona Cardinals explained on FOX Business Channel (via SportsBusiness Daily) that placing a franchise in Los Angeles “continues to be a priority for the league.”

(And we’d hate to see how long the nation’s second-largest market would be without an NFL team if it weren’t a priority.)

Bidwill also said that the league has had a “working group” focusing on the situation “for a long time.”

“Certainly, addressing how you finance a privately-financed stadium is one of the critical issues for the L.A. market,” Bidwill added.

One such project continues to develop in Industry, where Ed Roski is building a new stadium in the hopes of luring one or two teams there.  Currently, efforts are underway to settle a lawsuit filed by nearby Walnut regarding environmental impact issues.

A proposal to alter California law, which would likely moot the pending litigation, has been tabled in lieu of efforts to settle the case.  The mediator assigned to the matter has indicated that a resolution could be reached by the end of the current week.

“As the NFL vacuum in Los Angeles continues to exist…”
What better fit for a “vacuum” than a team that SUCKS?!?
    Start packing your horns, Vikings!!
Besides, the Lakers already have that city’s populace almost adorned in those fruity purple & gold colors, so you’re halfway there!!

With the first pick of the 2010 NFL draft, The Jacksonville Jaguars of Los Angeles select Tim Tebow… Solves everything.. Kidding about Tebow.. But those Fans in Jacksonville, all 7 are the worst ever… They have no clue about NFL football and they will never appreciate the game and will never deserve a team… Get the Jags out of Florida.. LA is far more deserving than the Whinny people Jacksonville

I’d have to agree. As long as Al Davis is vertical, the Raiders will not renew their lease with the city of Oakland. I’ll feel bad for the Bay Area Raider faithful, but Al Davis has no real loyalties anymore. That’s why both he and the Raiders are cursed with the absolute worst karma I’ve ever seen in pro sports.

I’ve heard the Skins might move out there so they could finally get out of last place in their division.
Even the weak Skins could win the NFC West.

  15. Raiders own the Steelers says: Sep 22, 2009 5:16 PM

Its quite simple. Raiders lease is up in 2010.
Davis owns the rights to L.A. Do the math.
Raiders still have a strong fan base in L.A.
The Jags and Vikings are rejected and wouldnt last a season in So Ca.
The Chargers would be eaten by Raider fans.

  16. Bamboozled says: Sep 22, 2009 5:20 PM

Glad to see the MFL is making LA such a high priority, just like it did with other big markets like Nashville, Charlotte & Jacksonville. Note to the “working group”: Nobody here cares. There’s too many other things to do in a place where the weather is perfect every Sunday. Go molest another metropolis.

  17. Raiders own the Steelers says: Sep 22, 2009 5:20 PM

@Raiders own the Steelers: Not if Al Davis has anything to say about it.
    ?
AL Davis prefers L.A. over Oakland.
Who wouldnt? A brand new Stadium in the second largest market with a billion things to do.
    And the weather is good.
He owns the rights to the L.A. market.

  18. Raiders own the Steelers says: Sep 22, 2009 5:21 PM

This is exactly where the Vikings will end up if Favre and Childress do not come through on the big expectations. Maybe an NFC Championship appearance will be enough (it will whet the appetite of the fanbase lemmings for “next year”), but anything short of that and the Minnesota faithful better get used to hearing “The Los Angeles Vikings” mentioned a lot. As goes Favre, so go the Vikings. He could do it…don’t count him out.

Jaguars would do well in San Antonio, especially a huge rivarly would develop between the Texans …
Right now the rivalry is useless.
Houston Texans vs San Antonio Jaguars
    Maybe Birmingham for the Jags?

  21. leatherneck says: Sep 22, 2009 5:41 PM

Al Davis likes to call it “Raider Nation” for a reason. Not a good reason, but a reason.

  22. Ambianthropy says: Sep 22, 2009 5:43 PM

Either way, Nobody in Jacksonville actually wants the Jaguars.. So what will the NFL do with a city that only has 25k people living in the city that are actually fans of the local team? … Jacksonville may never sell out an NFL game ever again. Even if you give them a superbowl championship for 3 consecutive years, they won’t acquire enough fans. If you cover another 50k seats, it won’t sell out.
Even if anther team moves to LA, The Jaguars are a huge problem. They are an embarrassment to the NFL image, it’s disgusting to call them an NFL franchise… They are the biggest liability of a franchise. The NFL is a privilege and the city of Jacksonville blew it. They don’t deserve a team. They are useless, and can’t even at least put a good football team on the field. Heck the best player is the kicker.

  23. Sportnman says: Sep 22, 2009 5:56 PM

Why in the HELL would we want the Raiders back? Listen, that is a Bay area team, so stay there. Bring the Jags and make them NFC west and then turn the Rams into AFC south. PROBLEM F&&$ solved!

  24. GregO says: Sep 22, 2009 5:58 PM

The NFL loves to stir the pot on this rumor every now and again to try and convince fans in other cities to pony up for new stadiums.
However the simple reality is that people in LA don’t want an NFL franchise and hopefully the NFL truly understands that.
If the NFL thinks the Jacksonville fan base is bad wait until they get a look at how bad it is in LA.
*Edit: The Raiders are the only franchise that would have any chance at developing consistent support from the LA fan base.

L.A. does not want the 4 time SB losers. Vikings are not coming to the Southland.
They only other NFC team that would be welcomed is the 49ers.
Their lease is up. They are planning on building a Stadium in Santa Clara. They need the city to vote on this.
Residents according to polls have said”no.”
Rams do not have a shot because of their lease .
Its up in 2012. St Louis is not going to let them go.
It comes down to the 49ers or Raiders.
Stop scaring the residents of Minnesota, the Vikings will get their new stadium in Minnesota.

nobody outside of the league office cares!the people of l.a. had 2 teams they did not support before so who cares if they have a team or not?I live in the midwest and can’t think of ever hearing anyboy whine about there not being a team there.if they do end up with one it will just be one more reason to hate l.a.

  27. Raiders own the Steelers says: Sep 22, 2009 6:13 PM

Jacksonville may only have 25k, but thats a heck of alot more than they would have in L.A.
Which would be 25 people. Jags dont belong here.
If the NFL held a Game at Dodger Stadium with the Raiders as the home team, it would completely sell out.
There is a reason the NFL shows Raider games in the L.A. area every week.

I don’t understand the obsession with believing the Vikings will move to LA. They have a terrible stadium situation. Yeah, we get it.
But they also have a lot of fans. They do very well in ratings both locally and nationally. Apparell sales are high. They are a generally popular team and sell out games despite competing in a small city with 3 other pro teams and a DI college.
The NFL and Vikings owners would much prefer getting a new Vikings stadium in Minnesota. There are much less popular teams to move where the NFL would lose much less moving them.
Zygi will not sell the team. He could potentially move it if the deal was stellar. But part of the problem with the deal in LA is that it is the same as the deal here with the Metrodome. Some other group owns the stadium and you just lease it. Zygi wants his own stadium subsidized by state taxes. That is what every owner wants. It is what is best for the team, state, and nfl.
We just have joke politicians that sidestep the issue. Pawlenty sees MN as a springboard to presidency and treats the stadium issue as something not important enough to even talk about in these trying times.
Yes, our governor can’t even work on all of our simple state’s issues and he wants to be the president some day. Okay rant over.

  31. Twiz says: Sep 22, 2009 7:52 PM

People need to realize one simple thing. The Vikings are NOT moving to LA.
LA has had two failed teams there. Lets pretend the Vikings end up in LAST place. It still won’t help. Why? The fan base is strong. While there might be a lil trouble selling out all home games each year, it is no where near the problem it is for other teams.
Look at it logically. The only one that constantly says the Vikings might move is Florio and those that think his word is golden. Most here with even an iota of football knowledge know better!

  32. slipkid says: Sep 22, 2009 9:32 PM

the most popular sport in LA is futbol, not football.

It is always funny to read how the RAIDERS is going to return to LA. Al Davis prefer L.A over Oakland. The RAIDER have a fan base in LA…LOL
Newsflash LA RAIDER fans. Al Davis love money and control. The dude Roski wants to own a team. He is not building a stadium so a owner can bring his team to play in that new palace. He is going want control of the team and as long Al Davis is alive he is not going to give up control of the RAIDERS, so he would be out of the L.A. race to fail.

What hell is wrong with you idiots!
The people of LA do not want a football team they will not support one unless its a winner every year and thats just not realistic in the NFL.
There is way too much to do in LA even into November then go watch a losing team at any sport will not happen ever
Why is it the NFL and a few gold diggers think they can force a round peg in a square hole is beyond me.
Have you heard any out cry from real football fans in LA no you haven’t because they can drive 2 hours and watch the chargers if they wanted but WAIT the Chargers cant sell out thier games either.
The beach is so close what to do …. go surfing and look at the hotties in the sand or got watch Phillip Rivers cry and lose.
Besides LA has a team its called USC!
GIVE IT UP LA DOES NOT WANT YOU!!!

  35. Silver&Black666 says: Sep 22, 2009 11:12 PM

People who don’t live in California cant understand but if you lived here you would understand why even when the 49er games are sold out the stadium is 1/4 empty.

    You keep telling yourself that.
    Newsflash Oakland crack pipe worshipers.
L.A. is Al’s favorite. A brand new Stadium in L.A. with great weather and tons upon tons of revenue.
And a market with billions to do. Plus the Raider fanbase is three times the size of the one up North.
    Awesome beaches.
Oakland is the Detriot of the West Coast. There is nothing to do but worship crack pipes, needles and women with diseases.
Weather is cold and dreary and damp.
The city is broke and the region around is trailer park haven.
Al Davis uses and abuses Oakland like a Crack addict.
The lease is up in a couple months
L.A. is clearly superior to that dump up North.
We got the Dodgers and the Angels and Lakers to go with the Raiders.
You got the A’S and Warriors. lol lol

The Raiders ARE home you DORKS! You LA people can have the chargers or some other disney franchise so mickey mouse can be your mascot just like your other hollywood style teams that are not really in Lost Angeles. We’ll just keep sending TV coverage to you boys south of us and you can keep acting like your apart of the Raider nation. We’ll call you jr. Raider nation. The only support the Raiders got in Mannywood was gangbangers using the jersey’s for their street gangs. Maybe Lost Angeles should invest in the new start up football league or bring back arena football. Get over it your not New York and you will never be as big or important. Its still California Love though!!!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Oh yeah the A’s only recently have taken a dive, I believe if you check the stats its one of the most winning franchises in baseball history, ain’t that what you guys will say about USC football this year???!!!!!! And don’t forget you got the Clippers, Kings, and Bruins to go with the Jaguars, Saints, Bills, Vikings, any of the lower profile teams. How does this sound the “Los Angeles Vikings of Walnut”? Sounds like something you guys would do. Get over it the Raiders used you and left you high and dry, you just refuse to believe their gone and ain’t coming back. Maybe you could pursuade the Superbowl-less lightening bolts to come back, oh wait they started winning so they wouldn’t have to!!!! You know what, because you all are zealous to get another team I believe the Oklahoma city Thunder won’t have any fans so you could probably pursuade them and the Tampa Bay Rays could fit in too since they play in another city but use the name of a city people know. Hey the Rams are back to LA form so they could also…I just love smashin on Lost Angeles
