On Sunday, Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford helped Minnesota linebacker Chad Greenway double his career interception total.
Today, Greenway was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for that performance. In addition to Greenway’s two interceptions (the second of which ended with an uncomfortable-looking juke step at the end of the return), Greenway also scooped a fumble and recovered an onside kick in the Vikings win.
Sunday was just the third time a Vikings linebacker has come up with three turnovers. The other two to accomplish that were current Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio and Roy Winston.
The Vikings play San Francisco on Sunday in a matchup of 2-0 teams.
Holy cow….not a bad thing said bout the Vikings. Then again, this was not reported by Florio……
Thanks Curran!!!
While the turnovers were great, and Greenway should be applauded for his efforts, if those in charge of the award had seen how lousy his tackling and positioning were in stopping the Lions’ running game in the first half, they might have had second thoughts on handing Greenway this award. As a Vikes fan I’m happy for him, and think he is a potential Pro-Bowl LB, but this shows how statistically and superficially-based these awards can be.
Did they not see the one huge missed tackle by Greenway.
Teams that play Detriot, Cleveland, St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Cinncinnati should be ruled ineligible for awards for that week.
Maybe even throw in Tampa Bay.
AJ Hawk, are you paying attention?!?! That game was a friggin’ CAREER for you.
Or teams named Greenbay should ineligable.
This is out year!
This is out year!
Nice to finally read a Vikings related article with no cheap shot at the end. I too applaud you Curran!
These player of the week things are kind of silly at times. Greenway had two really nice picks and was in the right place for a fumble recovery. He also had the onside kick recovery.
But honestly how do you really tell how great he played? He had 3 tackles in the game. To me defensive player of the week should be a guy that just seems to be everywhere all game. Greenway was everywhere on like 5 plays.
Same with Gore. His two long TD runs were straight shots up the field to the end zone. Other than that he didn’t do that much. Peterson week 1 or Polamalu for the first half of week one before getting hurt are the types of performances I like to see get this award.
Then again you don’t have those types of superhuman efforts every week.
For the record I am a Frank Gore fan and a big Vikings fan so I am not hating. Greenway was great but I’ve seen him dominate games more than this before without getting any balls thrown into his chest. When it comes down to it a lot of these awards are just given to lucky players.
Bigskyvikes, does that mean you’re finally “coming out”? (This is OUT year!)

He liked his typo so much, he typed it twice.
Haha wow bigskyvikes. Your nothing but a delusional moron who thinks the Vikings are the best team after beating two teams that won a combined 4 games last season.
Never heard of this guy.
His sudden outburst of production came against the Lions.
That is his 10 seconds of near fame. Back to obscurity now.
AJ Hawk, are you paying attention?!?! That game was a friggin’ CAREER for you.
AJ Hawk is still trying to pull Cedric Benson’s foot out of his ass.

Never heard of this guy.
That probably has largely to do with the fact that you’re a moron.
Bob Nelson: SUCK ON THIS HATER!!!
Chad Greenway in 2008: 5.5 sacks and lead the team with 115 tackles
A.J. Hawk in 2008: 3 sacks and 86 tackles.
We drafted the better linebacker in ’06 because Hawk is slow and pass cover.
You’ve heard of Chad Greenway now bitch.
Bob, maybe you haven’t heard of him because he does his job, he doesn’t do a sack dance after tackling a guy for a 3 yard gain.
Don’t get upset with Tali-Bob, he’s been busy with the CFL recently.
Plus, he’s generally right on his other takes:
Brett Favre won’t play for the Vikings.
Packers have nothing to worry about until the bye week.
Pat and Kevin will definitely be suspended for the first 4 games this year.
The list goes on…
He’s such a dolt even Packer fans don’t like him…
The presence of E.J. Henderson is going to help Greenway a ton this year. He may be player of the week a couple of more times. A.J. Hawk should pay attention.
Greenway is a decent player. Hawk sucks. Chickenfoot, Barnett usually saves his dances for big plays. IE third down stoppages and plays for loss. I see your cinnamon swirl is at it again.

Never heard of a first round pick?!?! Wow you really are a moron. What, you only know names like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning?! Be a fan of the game and not just your hillbilly cheeseballs.
Kinda like he did in the Bengals “game”?
He was called out by his own fans for his actions!
Barnett is a POS. Key word in your statement buttplug, is usually. You are an idiot with no knowledge of this game, you read up on what comes out of Pack headquarters and take it for gold. This technique crap is so stupid, only a jackass like you would buy it. You gave up 330 yards to the BENGALS, who, for the most part of the last 2 decades have been horrible. There is no reason for a team “supposedly” going to Miami to lose a game like this. Get a clue, this team is not as good as was said to have been.
You need to face reality in that the Pack may just struggle with the Rams this week. Try spinning that if it happens you ass happy clown.
Swirl get pounded on? This from an authority on the subject!! I’ll tell you one last time, I’m not interested. Go make somebody elses brown eye blue.
Now you are going to predict other teams win totals? They got beat by a cruddy denver team and beat a cruddy Packers team, all of a sudden they are good? That is just you trying to justify this loss. Nice try there asshat, but you and Bobnelson are the only ones that can believe that.
Denver is 2-0. Same as Minnesota. Most would argue that Denver is a more valid 2-0 due to who they ahve beaten.
Hydra, That has to be the dumbest thing you have ever said. That is saying alot.
I’m sure your line of reasoning is because they beat the Pack, right?
You have to be the dumbest jackass I’ve had the sorry pleasure to run across on here.
Congrats, you topped Dewey Axewound, that’s no mean feat.
Hail Hydra! The biggest asshat ever.
Denver is lousy. Barely beat the Bengals? Christ anyone can beat the Bengals…….ooops, except the mighty Packers.
Don’t worry Hydra, you are still the asshat, in fact you are the King of the asshats.
You know, when you grow up(if you ever do) you should become a proctologist. You are so fascinated with cinnamon swirls, you’d get to see as many guy’s asses as you wanted….and get paid for it!! Just a thought, you’d be killing 2 birds with 1 stone
