Matt Schaub, not Chris Johnson, named AFC offensive player of week

Earlier this year, Titans running back Chris Johnson criticized the sportswriters-only voting pool that determines the Associated Press postseason awards, including the offensive rookie of the year.

“[T]he whole thing is bogus,” Johnson said after Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was given the honor, “because people are voting for it that are not on the same field as the people who are playing.”

So we wonder what Johnson will have to say about getting snubbed for the Week Two offensive player of the week award.

Johnson generated 197 rushing yards, 87 receiving yards, and three long touchdowns in a 34-31 loss to the Texans.  But the prize went instead to the quarterback of the team that knocked off the Titans in their home opener — Houston’s Matt Schaub.

Schaub completed 25 of 39 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns, which equated to a passer rating of 127.8.

We realize that, at times, this can be an apples-and-oranges exercise, especially when the two candidates for an award play different positions.  But Johnson did something truly memorable on Sunday.  Virtually every week, there’s at least one quarterback who puts together numbers like the ones Schaub generated against the Titans.

Complete B.S. Johnson had an incredible day. If it were Adrian vs. Schaub for the A.P. would have won. This is complete crap.

Agreed Florio yet there’s one major difference and I’m surprised you haven’t caught on yet… The Texans won the Titans did not. Therefore people tend to look at players that helped their team win. Not blew up but still lost. With that said Johnson is sick, even with that over-sized bobble head helmet boppin’ down the field…

  3. Citizen Strange says: Sep 23, 2009 4:46 PM

Matt Schaub rhymes with Fat Slob.

Chris Johnson may be a little on the dumb side but he earned the award this week. Giving it to Schaub is a travesty.

  6. Cliff says: Sep 23, 2009 4:51 PM

The difference being, of course, that Schaub isn’t a total ass.

  7. gnop05 says: Sep 23, 2009 4:51 PM

Ummm… Pretty sure I could have accumulated Chris Johnson’s numbers against that Texans’ defense…. And I’m fat and slow.

  8. MasterShake says: Sep 23, 2009 4:53 PM

It’s expected that Johnson puts up those stats. That can be the only reason why Schaub was named AFC thingy.

  9. Eustus says: Sep 23, 2009 4:59 PM

Johnson’s effort don’t mean a thing. His team lost.

  10. bwag says: Sep 23, 2009 4:59 PM

    WOWWWW. Complete BS.
A freaking awful QB has a great day (for him) and does something that’s done EVERY single week by great QB’s and wins this award over Johnson, whom had a day that you are lucky to see once a year doesnt win. Whomever voted for this award is obviously a retard.

  11. ogguaman says: Sep 23, 2009 4:59 PM

Sounds like more falling tears from Johnson. Remove Johnson’s play and the Titans still lose. Remove Schaub and the Texans may not win. What did the man say, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”

  12. UncleLeo says: Sep 23, 2009 5:00 PM

Yeah, but Schaub won a division game on the road and had to make up for a two score deficit. That doesn’t happen every week.
Most of Johnson’s yards, and two of the TDs, came from blown coverage.

  13. steelerfan9598 says: Sep 23, 2009 5:02 PM

    Wow.

  14. canamac86 says: Sep 23, 2009 5:02 PM

No doubt that Johnson’s performance was memorable. The fantasy smackdown he delivered me still stings. But still, Schaub won, and it’s hard to argue the best performance should go to the loser.

  15. jersey73 says: Sep 23, 2009 5:08 PM

Tom Brady didn’t win it again this week?

  16. Duck Butter says: Sep 23, 2009 5:10 PM

Peyton Manning should have gotten it for scoring 27 pts in under 15 minutes. STUD.

  17. Sportygal says: Sep 23, 2009 5:11 PM

ogguaman, your argument applies to Johnson and the Titans. The Titans have lost two close games (one against the Steelers), but without Johnson they wouldn’t have had a chance to win. White can’t replace Johnson. Schaub did a great job this week too so props to him. However, Johnson should have received the honor, lose or not.

  18. CapsLockKey says: Sep 23, 2009 5:14 PM

Schaub’s team won, Johnson’s didn’t. Sounds like an easy decision to me.

  19. kravenm3 says: Sep 23, 2009 5:16 PM

While there IS usually at least one QB who has the same kind of numbers on any given week, they don’t often accomplish it against a team like the Titans. Furthermore, the RB position, while no piece of cake, is not as complicated to play as the QB position. While Johnson posted his numbers against an abysmal defense, Schaub earned this award by delivering a stellar performance against one of the league’s best.

Who knew that AFC Offesive Player of the Week was such a prestigeous award that such lively debate would ensue.
Suffice to say, nobody will give a rats ass about who “won” player of the week come February. Let’s keep things in perspective here.

    Matt Schaub isn’t Chris Johnson?!?
    Since when!!?

  22. Debacled says: Sep 23, 2009 5:26 PM

Buffalo’s Fred Jackson should have gotten offensive MVP.
The man carries the whole offense. Think he had over 200 yards between receiving and running the ball.

  23. BasicInstinct says: Sep 23, 2009 5:29 PM

And Schaub did it all on sprained ankle….you can bet they shot his leg full of pain killers.
He’ll be lucky if he can walk by the end of the season.

  24. UncleTuna says: Sep 23, 2009 5:33 PM

And picking another player from the same game doesn’t jump out at you?
Chris Johnson, of course it’s flawed, but do yourself a favor and STFU…

  25. realityonetwo says: Sep 23, 2009 5:36 PM

    a) Who cares about an offensive or defensive player of the week award during the season.
    b) Scoreboard.
    c) Who cares. I mean, who really cares?

The Associated Press is why I stopped reading newspapers almost 20 years ago. That leftist propaganda group can kiss my ass.
Chris Johnson is right…it’s all bogus. Just like the college bowl system. It’s all politics and big money.

Was there a quote from Johnson that I missed in this post? Or are you just talking out of your ass?

  28. Winston Wolfe says: Sep 23, 2009 5:54 PM

“But Johnson did something truly memorable on Sunday.”
He lost to Matt Schaub. The 87 yards receiving came on 1 play where Johnson was uncovered and could of skipped to the end zone. Florio you could have scored on that play.

  29. crackbubba says: Sep 23, 2009 5:55 PM

Total BS. The only reason for it is because Shaub won.

  30. Kodiakal Karnage says: Sep 23, 2009 5:57 PM

The way I always understood it–they only give this honor to players whose efforts help their teams WIN, don’t they?
Isn’t that part of the basic CRITERIA for these awards? Winning?
Are there EVER exceptions to that?
    Anybody?
    Bueller?

  31. chugs says: Sep 23, 2009 6:02 PM

Sounds like a bunch of you received a ton of ribbons & public education participation awards as kids…
Winners get awards & accolades, losers (even individuals who perform well on a losing team) don’t, normally.
That’d be like giving Louis Murphy the catch of the week against the Chargers (when it was clearly a drop)

very true…. ppl throw 4 td’s all the time… dude had almost 300 all purpose yards with a slew of td’s….dont really care for him (aside from online madden games) but he obviously should have one…. would be my salary is that was All-Day Peterson with those numbers versus schaub, then AP would have walked away player of the week.

  34. GoBears84 says: Sep 23, 2009 8:50 PM

@ Debacled…..read the post homeboy… johnson put up almost 300 yds, if memory serves right, thtas about 100 more yards than freddy. In defense of matt ryan….he definitely deserved it last year…. dont get me wrong, johnson did work for the titans, but with the help of kerry collins stepping up to the plate when troubles with vince came abroad…. matt ryan did more of a job with that offense as a rookie as far as turning the franchise aronud then johnson did….

Do you think it makes you sounds smarter when you say “whom”? Obviously the retard here is the guy who flunked 5th grade English… the guy WHO had a day you’re lucky to see once a year was thanks to an oblivious defense and great blocking. WHOEVER voted for this award, which, mind you, doesn’t mean dick, probably noticed that not only did he have the ball in his hands on every offensive play, was superb at reading the defense and distributing the ball, but also won the game.
When’s the last time you saw a left tackle make key block after key block, springing his man for touchdowns, or a shutdown corner not allow a star receiver a single reception, get Player of the Week? It’s a bullshit award, as is MVP. Deal with it.

  37. Anrkist says: Sep 23, 2009 10:29 PM

But Schaub won… isn’t that what the game is about?

  38. steeler-hater says: Sep 24, 2009 11:05 AM

    What a crock.
Johnson has what will be one of the year’s best rushing games (if not THE best) and yet he doesn’t win Offensive Player of the Week?
Schaub’s performance was excellent. But come on, you see 300+ yards passing games all the time.
When’s the last time you saw a rushing performance like the one Johnson had?
    Those don’t happen very often…
