Packers do safety dance, too

With Atari Bigby out for now and Nick Collins dinged up, the Packers have decided to make a fairly significant change in the last line of defense.

Aaron Rouse, a third-round pick in 2007 who started in Sunday’s loss to the Bengals, has been cut.

In his place, the team has signed Matt Giordano, who spent the first four years of his career with the Colts.

A year overdue. For a guy who came in touted as a ‘big hitter’, he was slow and missed tackles constantly. Now they need to explain why they cut Anthony Smith and kept Rouse at the end of camp to begin with.

Nice, Ted Thompson likes retreads. I’m sure the defense will be much improved after this move lol. Pssssst…..Ted your Offensive line sucks, maybe you should do something about it. I’m just saying.

Why in hell’s name are they cutting Rouse and keeping Bush? Rouse isn’t all that good, but, Bush simply cannot do anything right. He’s a lousy safety and he makes too many mistakes (and penalties) on special teams.
    This has me completely baffled!

I’m going to assume we’ll be hearing that Rouse is suspended or was arrested.

Baffled ! Yeah, you got that right!
I was psyched when Titans gave him a 3 yr contract — I thought we were rid of his stupid, penalty-plagued ass.
But then Ted matched it and sank a 1 mill signing bonus into him !
But Rouse sucks, too: poor discipline, bad decisions. Even the new safeties coach is bitching about his pad-level — he can’t play standing straight up, he’s got to bend, react, respond.
It’s official — I’m really having my doubts about Ted

Didn’t Rouse get hurt in Sunday’s game? You can’t just cut an injured guy without an injury settlement can you?

  16. jimmySee says: Sep 23, 2009 12:14 PM

Hindsight is absolutely 20-20 — but I never did quite understand why Anthony Smith was cut. The guy had a great camp and had worked (and started!) in the 3-4.

  17. Sterling says: Sep 23, 2009 12:18 PM

Rouse was hurt a good bit of last year; can’t blame him for that (just ask Justin Harrell!!). But the year before he made quite a difference, coming in as a rookie and playing in Collins’ place and made two INTs as I recall. Rouse never got much of a chance – for some reason McCarthy and Thompson love Atari Bigby, even though he blew several plays in the NFC championship game two years ago and gets stupid penalties all the time. Collins seems to get hurt every year. They’re so thin at safety I don’t see how they can afford to cut any safety they’ve got, esp. one that is familiar with their system. Dump Brian Boehm, I say, to make roster room, and keep that extra safety. Or better yet, dump Justin Harrell!
Oh well. No worries for Rouse; he’ll get picked up by someone else and probably get the playing time he deserves.

  18. karpsta says: Sep 23, 2009 12:21 PM

Let’s see, short on Safeties, and quality offensive linemen. So let’s just replace the poor depth with another retread.
Thankfully they still have 3 FB’s on the roster.

  19. cheddar is beddar says: Sep 23, 2009 12:31 PM

Rouse was awful. I actually laughed in amazement at how terrible he looked on the Henry touchdown, he looked like his feet were made of cinder blocks. Anyways, I’m glad he is gone, and although Bush blows too, at least he offers some special teams competence, unlike Rouse.
But as far as Bush goes, I am still bewildered how sucking at being a gunner on special teams is worth $1.15M. Shouldn’t there be some added value somewhere else for that kind of money? You would think he could somewhat comprehend the safety position, but that would be asking him to do waaaaay too much.
And fan_of_four, you can suck it. Go cry on a vikings thread you tool. You’re lame attempts of dissing TT, MM, & the Pack has become all too redundant. Find a new act.

Gotta love Packer fans. “Brian Boehm” or better yet, let’s get the name right, Brian Brohm is on the Practice Squad and as such does not count against the 53 man roster. Justin Harrell is on Injured Reserved, he like “Boehm” also does not occupy the 53 man roster.

Sterling – It might be difficult to cut Brohm a second time, seeing how he is currently on the practice squad.
Cutting a FB, and adding a safety would have been the right move here, I dont know what the hell thompson is thinking right now. I would rather see a gatorade cooler or a folding chair out there than watch Bush out of position play after play

  29. hrmlss says: Sep 23, 2009 1:01 PM

Maybe this guy plays o-line too. I thought smith looked good also, but hind sight is 20/20. As for signing “retreads”, not much else you are going to find around right now. Would be interesting to see whats on the Steeler or Raven practice squads tho.

  30. SpartaChris says: Sep 23, 2009 1:02 PM

I imagine there are reasons for the move we just aren’t aware of. Perhaps Collins and Bigby’s injuries aren’t as bad and they’re being kept out until we play Minny or until after the bye week. It’s also possible Rouse’s injury is a bit more severe than we know. I’m sure we’ll find out at this afternoon’s presser.

  31. SpartaChris says: Sep 23, 2009 1:06 PM

    @Vox-
I know Jimmy Smith is a juvenile trash talker and an overall embarrassment to Packer fans everywhere, but you really can’t talk. You disappeared for, what, two or three weeks last season after you got demolished 44-6 by the Eagles?

  32. SpartaChris says: Sep 23, 2009 1:07 PM

Just read Nick Collins was back in practice today, but Kampman has a cast on his right hand?

  33. SlipperyPete says: Sep 23, 2009 1:07 PM

Um. Maybe we should wait to see what happens for a week or two before deciding whether or not this was the right move. You know, cause a lot of people said Teddy was a fool for bringing in a washed-up player like Charles Woodson. How’d that turn out arm-chair GMs?
And yeah, enjoy your first half of the season with ol’ #4, Vikes fans. The highs are nice, but they make the boneheaded-interception-laden lows that much more gut-wrenching.

  34. longrodvanhungendong says: Sep 23, 2009 1:30 PM

  36. green&bold says: Sep 23, 2009 1:51 PM

Bush and Rouse suck. So did Anthony Smith. People think cuz Smith got a couple picks in the preseason that he was good. Truth is he was a gambler and was constantly out of position. Capers didn’t trust him hence buh bye. Truthfully, signing Bush’s offer sheet was a horrendous move, and I would probably rather have Rouse, but he’s hurt too.
When Collins goes down the secondary takes a HUGE hit. Thank goodness we play St. Louis this week. I fully expect it to be closer than it should and we’ll make them look better than they are.

  37. Bob Loblaw says: Sep 23, 2009 1:52 PM

As a Vikings fan I’m not going to bandwagon the Ted Thompson/Packers bashing.
Maybe there’s more to this than people know. Perhaps Rouse was slacking off in game preparation — not taking film study seriously, made the same mistakes at practice, or just wasn’t being professional to his approach to the game — and followed up with a poor performance in the game. Or maybe Thompson just wanted to make an example out of him to let others know that mistakes on the field will not be tolerated.
It does reek of desperation and a knee jerk reaction to one loss early in the season, but if Allen Barbre wasn’t demoted after the Bears game I would assume Rouse was already on thin ice prior to the Bengals game for this to happen.

Hey whats all this TT bashing going on??? Dont you all know that the man is a registered genuis, just look at his five year record since taking over the Packers, 32-34. If Green Bay wasnt a public owned organization, he would have been canned already. Yes, the man doesnt know what he is doing, any smart Packer fan can tell you that. This is the man who drafted Aaron Rouse instead of sending the pick to NE for Randy Moss!! So not only did we not end up with Moss, now we cut the guy we drafted in his place. The man’s draft makes no sense for the most part, Justin Harrell over Greg Olsen? Brian Bohem? Patrick Lee, Brandon “Action” Jackson, he drafts more duds than studs.
His O-Line is a mess, five years to build a decent O-Line and this is what he has, a line that is built for the Zone Blocking System (see Atlanta Falcons TED) that only Denver made famous and worked. Rumer in Packer Land, this is McCarthy and Ted’s “breakout season”. If they mess this up, watch for Capers to take over next year (remember you heard it hear first, not from Folio). Packer fans are fed up with McCarthy’s “gotta get that fixed” and gap control and pad level excuses.

From the Eau Claire (Wisc) Weekly Shopper:
JimmySmith was found hanging by a “chandelier” in his trailer home outside of Ladysmith, Wisconsin on Sunday evening, following the Packers embarrassing home loss to the lowly Bengals.
Scattered throughout the trailer were empty bottles of Miller High Life (The Champagne of Beers.) In Jimmy’s trophy case (which is actually a broken aquarium standing on it’s side) was a framed, autographed photo of his favorite coach, Brad Childress.
Jimmy will be sorely missed at his job at the Eau Claire Menard’s, where he restocked and sorted nuts and screws.
Jimmy’s funeral was attended by Minneapolis-residing, Viking-hating Boob_Nelson and whatthehelliscrawlinginmyass. Both of them share Jimmy’s hatred toward the Vikings, and like Jimmy, never seem to be able to criticize their own team’s shortcomings – and disappear from Vikings and Packers posts on PFT for about week after a Pack loss. We know, however, they will soon reappear and gloat about how the Packers manhandled the Rams.

They were backups. Nothing more. My point was that someone else seems to think they’re worth something.
And to expand on that, look at the rest of the players Ted cut to get the roster down to 53. There are several guys there who signed on with other teams. I’m not going to look them all up, but off the top of my head there’s Tyrell Sutton, Anthony Smith, Duke Preston, now Jamon Meredith as well. Am I saying Thompson is the best GM in the league? No. Is he drafting guys no one else sees any value in? No. So he’s somewhere in between.

    Actually, Ragnar-
Spitz and Colledge are the only two that have been playing halfway decently on that line. You’re right about it being a bogus team though. Ted sucks. If I were him, I’d be trading Kampman or Barnett for a RT and a 3rd already, but he won’t do it, as that would require admitting he made mistakes.
Fortunately, it’s still a win-win for us. If we continue to suck this bad while Favre tears it up, Teddy is gone and Childress gets an extension. If we by some miracle turn it around and start winning, and take the division after your impending meltdown hits, that’s even better.
    I’m happy either way.

However, with this in mind, I remain puzzled by TT and MM at how they seem unwilling to fix the HAWK situation. Every week HAWK gets slower, is more out of position, makes fewer tackles, and thus is less and less effective.
In last week’s game vs Cincy, they had that long punt return where the guy ran it back to about our 10 yard line. Hawk was the last guy between their returner and the endzone, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was just trying to be sure he tackled the guy, but Hawk backpeddled on that play, got his hips turned the wrong direction, and gave the guy 20 more yards on the return. As a linebacker, I’d expect Hawk to take a beeline for the guy and try to knock the ball loose, but Hawk backpeddled and got all turned around… I was flabberghasted. I’ve seen punters make better tackles.

Beer Cheese–Again–Poppinga needs to go. Kampman’s coming along fine, although I heard he has a cast on his hand now–Hawk & Poppipnga (wow Hydra, I agree with you) can go & let’s get some OT talent.
