T.O. admits to acting plans

It’s been one of the worst kept secrets over the past year or two, and even now that it’s out in the open, we’re not sure many people will really care.

Bills receiver Terrell Owens wants to be an actor.

Owens admitted his post-football plans during a Wednesday conference call with New Orleans reporters.

“I’m definitely by far a better football player than an actor,” Owens said, in an attempt at self-deprecation that was far more accurate that many of the things he ever has said.  “That’s something I want to get into after football and I jump on it and talked to a lot of people in production with my show.  Practice makes perfect and once after the season is over I’m going to take some classes and after I’m done, I’m probably going to try to link up with Dwayne Johnson, the Rock and Chris Rock and some other guys, Morris Chestnut, I’m good friends with Jamie Foxx and see where it goes.”

Yeah, let’s see where it goes.  Maybe T.O. will be the next Jim Brown.  Or Fred Williamson.  Or Brian Bosworth.  Or Howie Long.  Or Jason Taylor.

Actually, the only former NFL players who, to our recollection, ever did anything in acting were Ed Marinaro and Fred Dryer.  And maybe they succeeded because they set their sights lower than movies, “settled” for television, and actually had, you know, talent.

The most common misconception for wannabe movie stars is that fame and/or notoriety equates to acting skill.  Owens has fame and notoriety, but he has no acting skill.

If you don’t believe us, watch this video of T.O.’s ability to demonstrate real range, by playing himself.

Then again, plenty of people who are getting paid millions of dollars to act have no acting skills.  So maybe he’s onto something.

For now, though, we’ll assume that T.O. is the latest person who has made a name for himself in sports and who thinks that he can sell tickets and DVDs simply by taking off his shirt, smiling, and awkwardly uttering a sentence or two with no comprehension of the nuances of the craft that can be properly learned not by joining Michael Scarn for after-hours improv classes, but by devoting years to studying and learning and watching and scratching and clawing and living in crappy apartments and working at even crappier jobs.

But, hey, maybe the fourth or fifth season of T.O.’s reality show will chronicle his failed efforts to find work in Hollywood.

The difference between FBI Agent Michael Scarn and T.O. is that Owens pulls out a big ego every chance he gets.

  31. Bubba Maximus says: Sep 23, 2009 11:31 PM

Per FFK, I just read the list of movies in which Terry Crews appeared.
The list includes: White Girls, Soul Plane, and The Longest Yard (remake) – three of the biggest pieces of feces to ever contaminate a motion picture screen.
If such a resume is supposed to prove that Crews has comedic talent, I fear for the future of our country.

  40. cptmick says: Sep 24, 2009 1:55 AM

You forgot Merlin Olson . . . he was brilliant in Little House on the Prairie. The funny thing is that you must admit that he was likely the best actor amongst all who played ijn the NFL.
As for OJ, he was pretty good actor too. I loved him in the 1996 trial production of, “I didn’t do it”.

Al Bundy once scored 4 TD’s in a high school game, but he lost his scholarship due to a broken leg. Ed O’Neil was signed by the Steelers in 1969, but he was released before the beginning of the season.

Jessica Simpson has put together a career, and she has no talent. Maybe her and TO can star in a remake of Posideon Adventure. Only they really sink the boat and no one survives.

  53. Kidekk says: Sep 24, 2009 8:52 AM

Nobody cares, which is why you posted a story and speculated on his prospects. Where’s the story about Ochocinco buying four endzone tickets for some fans, via twitter, for his planned celebration? Does that not warrant attention, or is it something good about Ocho so you don’t want to post it? You would think that this site would follow up on an event that it was covering.

Schlereth (sp) on that soap a couple of years ago/I know its college but I gotta submit Mark Harmon. plus my trump card Rosie Greer in “The Man with Two Heads” w/ Ray Milan

  59. MikeF says: Sep 24, 2009 10:37 AM

Agree with some of the other posters, Merlin Olsen did a fine job in the television roles he played.
Alex Karras as well, notably in the miniseries “Centennial.”

  60. Nevisyakker says: Sep 24, 2009 11:11 AM

Alex Karras played MONGO in Mel Brook’s movie “Blazing Saddles.” The role required him to act like an overgrown, somewhat sub-human retard.
If T.O. could snag a role like that it would be called “Type Casting!”

  61. Kodiakal Karnage says: Sep 24, 2009 11:32 AM

Stink Schlereth on whatever soap opera.
Speaking of “stink”–T.O. should try “acting” like he knows how to hold onto a pass without dropping it.

  62. bacardilvr says: Sep 24, 2009 11:37 AM

Freddie Dryer and Ed Marinaro were pretty good.
But to dismiss Merlin Olsen, Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, Terry Crews, and Alex Karras is just wrong. Sure Brown and Williamson did many “blaxsploitation” movies, many of them made M-O-N-E-Y. Especially Williamson, check out Black Caesar to see how good Williamson was, and if anything to hear some of James Brown’s best musical work.
