Week Two power rankings

Week Two is over.  Week Three is coming.  Wednesday is the one day when there isn't much to talk about, since players typically are off on Tuesdays.

So we need to do something to generate traffic.

The New York Giants may just be the best team to ever play football, and Eli Manning, I believe, is the best quarterback to ever don a helmet.

  2. Jay77 says: September 23, 2009 9:33 AM

The chargers at six, are you nuts?

  3. doublestuffflorios says: September 23, 2009 9:33 AM

Geez Florio! The Chargers at #6? I'm a Chargers fan and I think that is way too high.

  4. BradyQuinnsCodPiece says: September 23, 2009 9:33 AM

    Jets-Eagels both too low

    Bengals far too high.

God I hate being a Browns fan sometimes... Can't even argue their ranking.

  5. lqhybird25 says: September 23, 2009 9:34 AM

    Wow Florio Kudos and Props.
I appreciate that you think highly of the Bengals suddenly. Nice move up.
You usually rip them a new one.
interested to see where the Who dey Nation will rank if they Beat Pitt.

  6. Scrip Club Lover says: September 23, 2009 9:34 AM

I applaud the fact that, unlike other power rankings, you have my Bills ahead of the Dolphins. Well done.

Think you still have the Pats too high, they ought to be closer to 13-14

Overall, one of the more common sense rankings out there.

  7. wydok says: September 23, 2009 9:35 AM

The Eagles were certainly worth being dropped, but dropping them below the Cowboys? I dunno...

Saints below the 1-1 Stillers is surprising but below the Chargers too? Get real man!

  13. angryyankee says: September 23, 2009 9:39 AM

I stopped after seeing the Jets ranked below the Patriots.. Ummm, did you see Sunday? The balance of power has shifted in the AFC east..

  14. itsacurse says: September 23, 2009 9:39 AM

I have no problem with the Jets @ 10...but would it be that hard to put the Jets 9 and the Pats 10? I know, I know, that's exactly the type of reaction you're going for...

  15. champ1315 says: September 23, 2009 9:39 AM

For once I actually agree with most of those. Thank god you arent like most writers who still have a hard on for the pats even though they should be 0-2.

  16. Majik Man says: September 23, 2009 9:40 AM

After what they did to the vaunted Philly D, the Saints deserve a Top 5 nod, a lot more than the Steelers do, after looking very unimpressive in its first 2 games.

  17. Free_Tramopoline says: September 23, 2009 9:41 AM

    Go G-men!

  18. owumd says: September 23, 2009 9:42 AM

Yikes, a team loses one game to the best offense in football when its starting, pro bowl QB is out of action, and it falls 9 spots in your power rankings.

    Tough crowd.

  19. Levito says: September 23, 2009 9:42 AM

Florio! You slighted my team! You don't think they're the best team in the NFL, therefore I must comment on how horrible your rankings are! How will my team ever win the superbowl if you don't rank them higher?!?!

  20. Jonathan says: September 23, 2009 9:44 AM

So, the Chargers are #6. Have you actually watched their games? Wow, may want to edit this.

  21. monkeygoalie says: September 23, 2009 9:44 AM

Broncos are 2-0, they beat CLeveland by 3 touchdowns, and you have them dropping 1 spot to 24? The Bengals are above them, based on what? Seahawks above them, with a career back-up? What exactly is the formula here?

  22. faulkn22 says: September 23, 2009 9:45 AM

Teams I feel are a bit misplaced...

    Team (your ranking) my ranking
    Vikings (4) 10
    Chargers (6) 12
    Saints (7) 4
    Redskins (21) 25
    Broncos (24) 21
    Lions (32) 30

Not bad, but I feel these teams are out of place. The Saints would beat the Vikings, in my opinion, so I would move them up.

The Chargers aren't quite THAT good.

Redskins are looking very bad, beating a very bad team by less than a field goal.

Broncos would beat the Redskins, in my opinion, so I moved them up as well.

I feel the Lions had two really tough opening games and would almost certainly beat St. Louis or Kansas City (or maybe even Washington this weekend), so I feel they're about 30.

All in all, not too bad Florio (but I think I could do better, heh joking).

  23. vitony says: September 23, 2009 9:45 AM

How can you possibly have the Patriots ranked above the Jets, when (i) they just lost to the Jets ,(ii) they have looked awful in 2 straight games, and (iii) they are a stupid decision and fumble my Leodis away from being 0-2. At least seem non-biased

  24. Twiz says: September 23, 2009 9:46 AM

"The New York Giants may just be the best team to ever play football, and Eli Manning, I believe, is the best quarterback to ever don a helmet."

That has got to be one of the stupidest things ever posted by someone here! Whatever it is you are smoking, please share!

Florio, not bad. I don't agree with the positioning of some of the team, such as the chargers, patroits, and a few others, I think its more personal on my end than anything else. For once, I gotta say "Good job"

  25. WhoPlaysWhere says: September 23, 2009 9:46 AM

Somewhere Mike Brown and his family is smiling reading these rankings. They have once again achieved "mediocrity" and as they told us a few years back, being in the middle of the pack of the NFL is a huge accomplishment for this franchise. Florio, do the fans of Cincinnati justice and don't pity us with some overblown power ranking that just might give Mike Brown a reason to increase ticket prices and the cost of beer next year. (FYI - Beer at Paul Brown Stadium is $7.50 this year!!! What is this, California?)

  26. Free_Tramopoline says: September 23, 2009 9:47 AM

I'd really like to see a "Manning Bowl" once before one of the brothers retires or get hurt, I thought for sure last year was going to be the year (before a certain someone took a certain something somewhere he shouldn't have and shot himself in a certain place). Now with essentially the entire Indy coaching staff taking a hike for this year, I don't think the chances will look good for awhile again. Fail.

  27. DC Vikings Fan says: September 23, 2009 9:49 AM

I guess the first two weeks were just a sidetrip in Washington's march to the Super Bowl. The schedule gets tougher and so will they. By the way, I need some change. Do you have two tens for a five?

  28. TCH4ever says: September 23, 2009 9:49 AM

Wowie!!! As a Bucs fan I fear New Orleans the most on our remaining schedule. The Saints and the Giants are the best teams in football right now. No love for the Saints.

  29. DildoBaggins says: September 23, 2009 9:49 AM

Florio has the Giants at 1 - SHOCKED AND AWED!!

And Phili drops 9 spots after one game - albeit a blowout - without Donovan McNabb and because of two turnovers to begin the second half.

And you have the f'n Cowboys above the Eagles????

Seriously Florio? Come on buddy the Eagles aren't that far from Jersey dude.

And I'm sorry, the Colts defense was absolutely horrible this week - how the hell are they at #2?

    HawgNSonsTV says:
how can the Pack be under the Bear ...when they beat them?.................................Florio...I want answers!

How about, the Bears responded by beating the reigning Super Bowl champs, and the packers took all their momentum and lost to Cincy.

This is what happens. No tape on a defense? Can win. Game tape on a defense? Lose to Bengals.

  31. Darth_Bonham says: September 23, 2009 9:50 AM

I think you guys got the rankings pretty much spot on except for one team and that would be the Denver Broncos. They have started the year 2-0 and you have them at 24th right next to all of the 0-2 teams. While they haven't been pretty, their defense is playing well. I certainly can't see why they would be so far behind the Bengals who they beat. They will probably lose more than they win over the course of the season, but you have to respect their wins on some level at this point!

It is hard to be fair and balanced for all 32 teams, but PFT please try better as this is the best site going these days.

  32. Mr Walker says: September 23, 2009 9:53 AM

  36. jb347 says: September 23, 2009 9:58 AM

Colts #2? My grandmother could rush for 100 yards against them.

    Pats, Bills too high.

    Cardinals, Broncos too low.

  37. Big_Monkey says: September 23, 2009 9:59 AM

I'm afraid you may be right about my Eagles.

Westbrook's hurt, McNabb ailing, we'll see...It's still very early

  38. mygridironspace says: September 23, 2009 10:00 AM

You guys are basing your picks on previous years and how they look on paper. There is no way that the Pats with their losses on defense and Brady coming off an ijury should be that high. They barely beat the Bills and didnt score a TD on the Jets. Then you have the Jets who are 2-0 with 2 excellent performances against 2 good teams ranked 10th. The Colts got lucky against a mediocre team in the Dolphins and are at #2. The Saints should definitely be in the top 5 without a doubt. So stop making picks because a team used to be good or might be good again. Base your picks on how they are right now.

  39. spanky2525 says: September 23, 2009 10:01 AM

  41. jan van flac says: September 23, 2009 10:04 AM

The Giants have struggled to win both of their games and got absolutely gashed by Dallas' running game, only won because Romo literally threw them the game. No way they should be #1.

New Orleans should be higher. The Jets have yet to allow a touchdown, they should be higher.

  42. Andy says: September 23, 2009 10:06 AM

The Broncos at 24?? Are you kidding me??

They should be in the top half, at least.

Absolutely no respect, which I'm sure will suit the Broncos just fine.

Just keep on writing us off, and call us back in December when we have won the division.

  43. My Vick In A Box says: September 23, 2009 10:06 AM

I'm surprised that Florio doesn't have the Cowboys at #32 though.

  45. Gee_Q says: September 23, 2009 10:11 AM

  46. Bob Nelson says: September 23, 2009 10:17 AM

    C'mon get serious.

TThe vikings beat the # 30 and #32 teams and they get ranked in the top 5 ahead of the Steelers?!!!

The Cowboys have only beat #29, and are ranked way up at 13th!

Yet the 49'ers who are the best team in the NFC via tiebreakers is only #12.

The Packers beat the Bears yet are now ranked lower than the Bears?? Explain that!

Your inexpicable criteria appears to have obvious flaws.

  47. cy farnsworth says: September 23, 2009 10:17 AM

You have the Texans rated higher than the Bills. Well the Jets blew out the Texans, while the Patriots needed a miracle to edge out Buffalo. Then when the Jets and Patriots played, the Jets won the game.

So how is New England rated above New York?

  48. Caveat Lector says: September 23, 2009 10:17 AM

Ummmm, going 2-0 by beating a team 27-6 earns you a drop in the rankings? Do you have to beat the Browns by minimum 40 points to move up do you?

  49. Dan says: September 23, 2009 10:18 AM

How can the Colts be #2? They beat the 0-2 Jaguars 14-12 at home and were thoroughly dominated by the Dolphins on MNF.

The Colts are not that good this year.

  50. favrecansuckit says: September 23, 2009 10:20 AM

  51. Ralph says: September 23, 2009 10:25 AM

Thanks for putting my Vikes so high, but I think it's unrealistic. Until they face someone of quality they're still a big question mark.

Both the Falcons and the Saints should be above the Vikes at least for now. I'd also put the Ravens ahead of the Colts and the Pats below the Jets. The Jets are on the way up and Pats are falling.

The Packers who have a revolving door for a Oline should be just ahead of the Bears.

All in all, it's a reasonable list since it's just opinion; therefore it's exactly right.... for you.

  52. beer_beer_beer_beer says: September 23, 2009 10:25 AM

The question isn't "how", they question is "why". And the answer to that is Florio knows that obvious ranking draws the suckers like flies on a turd to respond with indignation - Why does he do that? Because he gets paid by the user posts. The more dissension he stirs up the richer he gets.

Dallas lost a Division game, wheras Philly has not...by rule they are higher in the division! Don't worry with such a non-clutch QB like Romo, Dallas will be dropping soon enough...Now Barber is hurt...injuries keep mounting!

  60. eeerockski says: September 23, 2009 10:47 AM

The Broncos are obviously not the 2007 Patriots, okay? But they are 2-0 and beat the Cincinnati Bengals, in fact shut them out for 59 out of 60 minutes, yet we are rated 6 spots LOWER than them because we did what, beat the Browns by a few TD's? So you're saying if we were to play them again, they'd beat us this time? I don't get it. How long did it take to compile this list?

  61. DallasDeathStar says: September 23, 2009 10:48 AM

Giants get a victory on a last second field goal to the Cowboys, ranked 13th,who out played them the whole game and now they are number 1?
The Jets beat the Patriots and they are ranked lower, haha

  62. GoBrowns19 says: September 23, 2009 10:49 AM

Apparently you have not seen either Browns game this year. St. Louis or Detroit would blow them off the field (Detroit will get their chance). We need that stadium to be EMPTY for home games so Lerner will sell the team. He cares more about his soccer team in England or wherever than he does about this sad franchise.

Just like most other websites your power rankings make little sense as well.

  66. TylerDurden says: September 23, 2009 11:08 AM

  67. daffy87 says: September 23, 2009 11:09 AM

Giants #1 really? They let the Cowboys rush for 250+ and they won the turnover battle 4-0, had a pick 6 even and still required a last second field goal to win....they're fortunate they didn't get blown out of the stadium, I definitely wouldn't rank them #1.

  68. Bob S. says: September 23, 2009 11:11 AM

    #2 Indy? Get real!

They barely squeaked out a 14-12 winover weak Jacksonville then have Miami walk all over them for over 400 yards and for more than 45 minutes but luck out as the field goal kicker misses a FG and 2 open receivers drop TD passes right in the hands in the endzone to fluke off that win? 2 close wins against 0-2 teams? And you rank them #2. Not off what this Colts team has done this season. They aren't even close to the top anymore with that kind of defense.

  69. Airperuvian says: September 23, 2009 11:13 AM

Because the Bears beat the Steelers while the Packers lost to the Bengals.
The Packers were lucky to win the game against the Bears but it still counts so oh well.

  79. Agamemnon says: September 23, 2009 11:36 AM

A lot of this is based on what teams have done so early in the season coupled with there they are expected to be. With the loss of Tuck, the Giants may not be on top for long. Until the Vikes beat someone quality, they are an unknown as well. However, I think these rankings could be argued as being pretty good for so early in the season. Injuries and unexpected player performance could really alter these going forward.

If I would have any argument, it would be that perhaps the Saints should be a bit higher. That offense looks pretty damn good.

I don't know what Florio's intention is here, but I look at these power rankings not so much as where these teams should be, but where they are based on the performances they have had on the field. It's entirely arguable that a team could lose to the Lions early on in the season and go on to win the Superbowl. Just look at the Tennessee Titans and the Arizona Cardinals of last year.

All summer Florio makes fun of Favre and Childress and now he ranks them 4 th best in NFL. Your an idiot Florio.

    This is not college football.

    Rankings? And you care?

  82. NovaDawg says: September 23, 2009 11:52 AM

The Browns are the worst team in the league and should be at the bottom of every poll. I'm a die-hard Browns fan, but its just true.

    SKOL!

  84. Paul MSR says: September 23, 2009 12:00 PM

Not bad, in my rankings I had to leave the Eagles above the Cowboys, and for one week at least put the Jets over the Pats.

Surprised at San Diego being so high thou.

  85. JerseyJints says: September 23, 2009 12:03 PM

Glad to see g-men at #1. Colts too high, Saints too low.

  86. Cut-2-Marsh says: September 23, 2009 12:13 PM

What has Minnesota done to be at #4? They have beaten the browns and the lions in hard fought games.

But you put denver at 24 because they demolished the browns and beat the bengals.

  87. jan van flac says: September 23, 2009 12:31 PM

    @vox

considering the Cowboys usually look like a powerhouse in September and then fold, their ranking is pretty good. The Eagles on the other hand are notoriously slow starters but always play their best football late in the season so that has to be taken into account.

  88. theTRUTHwillSETuFREE says: September 23, 2009 12:35 PM

Why am I not suprised that Florio still has the chargers ranked in the top 10 and the Raiders stayed at #27 this week. Up until the last minute of that game it was completely dominated by the Raiders. Chargers should be 0-2 right now.

And Broncos fans, what is your gripe? Cincinatti had you beat until Santa Clause gave you Christmas early. And then you beat the Browns! Cmon. You maybe are a spot or 2 lower than where your ranking now....but trust me, your team is suspect! I think your gonna see that this Sunday in the Town!

I still think the Raiders should be in the range of #20-#22, but #27, I think thats some of that Ol' Hater Juice, Florio's sippin on again!!

  89. Empire Jones says: September 23, 2009 12:42 PM

    Random thoughts to the haters:

Minnesota hasn't beaten anyone yet. You can gleam on the 2-0 record, you can stroke AP all day, all day, all day but they haven't beaten a great team, or even a decent team.

Patriots still favorites in their division unless they're .500 in November. And even then, I still might pick them.

Tennessee still best 0-2 team out there by far, even thou Jeff Fisher is a scumbag that ordered the hit in 2007 that looks to have ended Merriman's dominance.

You can't raise the Ravens for beating a quality team like SD and then drop SD too far, claiming they're not a top team. SD at #6 is fair. Still a top AFC team. Let's not forget shoestring lines on both sides of the ball, questionable calls, and they still only lost by 5.

Bills not worthy of too much yet. Pre-season they were talked about as a 5-11 type team, and Bucs at home was already a win factored into those five wins. last year they were 4-0, then 5-1 and tanked. Excuse some of us for not jumping the gun and talking "wildcard" potential.

49ers might well be the real deal this year. Singletary is the man. He's the best babysitter in the NFL right now. Imagine the team if Crabtree wasn't so misguided.

The New York Giants may just be the best team to ever play football, and Eli Manning, I believe, is the best quarterback to ever don a helmet.

Uh, I think Leviathan was attempting hyperbole. I know, he will look up the definition. Still, well done, but too subtle for PFT.

Giants fan here, and although I find Power Rankings irrelevant, GMen don't deserve #1 until they can get their average rush number down from, like 7 yards/carry! Sure, they've found a way to win and I think that once teams respect their passing game and play them straight up, Jacobs will get going and must improve in red zone. Still, Elisha and crew don't panic and looks like another strong season ahead.

  91. florio's_mom says: September 23, 2009 1:16 PM

    I'm sorry this is terrible.

How can the saints, jets and niners be behind the likes of the patriots and chargers?

And why the crap is a 0-2 Miami team ahead of the undefeated denver broncos.

    Better luck next week guys.

  92. CincyAllDaWay says: September 23, 2009 1:34 PM

Patriots are way to high. They suck.
And for all you Bronco fans pissing and moaning, you think you have a team but may just as well take a dump in one hand and wish in the other. See which fills up first. You beat the Bengals by a fluke. Your boy wa standing around w/his finger in his ass and the ball fell into his pocket. then you beat the Clowns?? My sons flag football team could beat the them!

  93. mamedia says: September 23, 2009 1:50 PM

The Chargers are ranked too high. They should be in the mid 20s. Have you watched them? Overrated.

The Broncos are right on. They do not deserve to be any higher than 24. They haven't done anything.

The Chiefs should be higher than the Raiders. The Chiefs outplayed the Raiders on Sunday. The better team did not win.

The Titans and Patriots are too high.

The Jets should be higher that the Patriots.

  95. mamedia says: September 23, 2009 2:25 PM

"cliffcla" I have to say that was a good effort, but you have one clear problem...

Denver ranked at 3? LMAO!! Maybe 23!

  96. lkimball says: September 23, 2009 2:32 PM

Wow. Fourth place for getting by the Browns and Lions! You must be a BIG Vikings fan.

  97. GoBears84 says: September 23, 2009 2:53 PM

everybody cant hate but you dont see any other power rankings out there right?? least florio took the time to do this.. That said, Bengals are probably dead on browns fans, quit hating. I feel the bears are where they should be, and the chargers are far too high, the steelers i think are way to high, chicago didn't play that stellar of a game and beat them, and they squeaked by tennessee whom lost to HOUSTON last week....i'm just not convinced they are of Super Bowl caliber as they were last year... The jets are WAAAAY Underrated as are the Falcons, you will agree after they smash the gaytriots this sunday.

  98. GoBears84 says: September 23, 2009 2:55 PM

oh...and why are the saints at #7 are you kidding me?? Sharper leads the league in picks, Brees leads the league in TD's, Points, ETC>..... they are top 3 caliber my opinion. look what they did to the philly D....

  99. theTRUTHwillSETuFREE says: September 23, 2009 3:05 PM

@CliffCLA: I still think you have to take in account things that happened in the game, there still is no way Denver should be #3. There is deffinatly some work that needs to be done on it, but I think it's better than Florio's

  100. sullijo says: September 23, 2009 4:07 PM

The Broncos at 24? Keep disrespecting them....when will media outlets learn that the NFL is not played during the offseason?

The Broncos went on the road to Cincy and held them to 7 points. Cincy goes on the road to the vaunted GB Packers and puts up 31. You can watch highlights (like the miracle TD in week 1) or you can watch GAMES.

Denver flat outplayed the Bengals. When you say they "shouldn't have won the game" - how do you address the fact that they were on the Bengals 24 yard line up 6-0 with 2:20 to play. ONLY A MIRACLE (see 2 holding penalties) could have got the BENGALS back in that game.

As for the Browns, how many TDs should a 3 point favorite win by to exceed expectations and move up in the rankings (not down). Obviously, winning by 21 points is not enough. This is the same Browns team that only lost by 14 to the Vikings (ranked 4th). So, the difference between 30 and 24 is 21 points, but the difference between 30 and 4 is 14 points???????

I'm glad this isn't college football where rankings actually matter.....won't ever read this column again.

I want these 5 minutes of my life back....idiotic.

For the record, ranking them 3 is idiotic as well - I have them at 15. 24 shows pure laziness.

  101. NoKoolaidCowboy says: September 23, 2009 5:22 PM

Too soon for this list to be taken seriously. Sure the Giants beat the Cowboys but it wasn't a beating like a #1 ranked team should've.

  102. BoltFan17 says: September 23, 2009 6:06 PM

Why do people hate on my Chargers? They got into the redzone 5 times on Baltimore and should have won the game with all due respect to the Ravens and their fans. Besides at the end of the season there will only be one at the top.

  103. slapme7silly says: September 23, 2009 6:27 PM

lets see how the season plays out...you will see the steelers in the AFC championship game. It is tooooo early people so get a grip!

  104. Saint33 says: September 23, 2009 6:46 PM

I'm just going to say to all those complaining about the Broncos being below the Bengals, even though the Broncos are probably a few spots too low, saying they are better than the Bengals just because they beat them is a terrible reason. The Broncos didn't win that game, they were handed a miracle. Scoring the luckiest game winning touchdown in the history of the game does not make you a good team.

  105. cliffcla says: September 23, 2009 7:33 PM

Rest assured that my rankings will change considerably after week three... My ranking go on Win Loss and differential of points scored.. Not who I think is the Best.. It is too early in the season for any power rankings to be spot on... I fact doing power rankings before week 6 or 7 is kind of pointless.........
