Plaxico gets a rude welcome to his new home

Former Steelers and Giants receiver Plaxico Burress began his two-year prison term on Tuesday.

First stop?  Rikers Island.

Needless to say, he wasn’t welcomed with a ticker-tape parade.

According to the New York Post, Burress was met with taunts of “asshole!” and “the Giants suck!”

“He was depressed,” an unnamed prison guard told the Post.  “He was trying to
keep to himself, but everyone was yelling at him.”

Burress spent only one night at Rikers.  On Wednesday, Burress was transported by car (or maybe crappy old school bus, like in The Longest Yard) to Ulster Correctional Facility in Napanoch.  He’ll be evaluated there for more permanent placement elsewhere in the New York prison system.

But he apparently won’t have to worry about dealing with any inmate who hopes to make a name for himself by sticking a shiv into a Super Bowl champion.

“[Burress] will be separated from the inmate population at all times and
confined to a single cell,” Correction Department spokeswoman Linda Foglia told the Post.  “He’ll only get out for three
hours of recreation per day, plus his required meetings with counselors
and medical and mental health staffers.  He’s allowed three showers a
week and one visit per weekend.”

Meanwhile, Jay Leno said earlier this week during the monologue of his weeknight show (only on NBC at 10:00 ET/PT, with all ad sales handled by Kraft Sports Group) that extra security was employed, so that Burress wouldn’t try anything.  “Like what,” Leno said, “steal a guard’s gun [and] shoot himself in the other leg?”

Wow, 3 showers a week? Wow. I don’t like Plax at all, and think he got what he deserved, but only 3 showers a week? Separated from the inmate population? So he’s getting special treatment…

  7. droppingloads says: Sep 24, 2009 11:27 AM

This story about burress and jay leno is clearly a conflict of interest, you are owned by NBC, that is the channel that Lenos horrible show is on, you are CLEARly pluging his show to serve your corporate intersts. It is sad that in one story you criticize the pats for having a conflict of interest with espn, then bring Jay Leno into a football story, just sad and hypocritical.

Do they serve humble pie in prison? Three showers a week?? Thats more than he took before. I have visions of him going to pick up a football from the ground, and the warden shooting him, claiming he was trying to escape.

  15. GoBrowns19 says: Sep 24, 2009 11:38 AM

I’ve gone back and forth about getting two years for his crime. But I just keep going back to the opinion that is was just. If he only got a fine, he might not think too much about carrying a gun around again, and maybe next time he doesn’t just shoot himself by accident. On the other hand, he DIDN’T shoot anyone but himself, so two years? Tough call.
On the selfish side, I think Burress is a dickhead so rot in prison I say!

  20. Krow says: Sep 24, 2009 11:43 AM

Say what you like, but 20 months for this offense is bull$hit. He was an idiot… and has no one to blame but himself. It’s still way too much, and is a sad indictment of our justice system. Plax goes to jail for shooting himself… George Bush grins at the coin toss in Dallas while our troop deaths in Iraq close in on 5,000. That’s America… with liberty and justice for….. some.

Was listening to WIP last night, when Mike Missanelli (I believe it was he) was discussing this with one of the other DJs. He was making a case for Plax still being in football shape after his sentence was over — after all, yes, he’ll be away from the game for two seasons, but “he won’t be spending that time getting slammed on his knees”.
Miss, I know you were trying to say that his body wouldn’t be taking the toll it would be were he playing football, but man, you should’ve used some better phrasing.

  23. bearsrule says: Sep 24, 2009 11:44 AM

Sad story – Plaxico’s act of stupidity will cost New York about $40,000 to imprison him for two years. In the end, is anyone better off by this, Jay Leno’s stupid joke aside? IN a time of deficits and massive budget cuts, it is long past due we examine how and why we imprison some people in this country. I know the governor got to take a stand and show he is tough on guns with this, but is it worth it?

  26. Tdk24 says: Sep 24, 2009 11:52 AM

Maybe he could bunk up with Donte Stallworth. Oh, right, if you kill someone you only do 30 days. I guess Plax will have to wait until a player fails to swerve and steps on a worm, and only maiming it before he gets a long term bunk mate.

“I wish I could tell you that Plax and Vick fought the good fight, and the Sisters let them be. I wish I could tell you that – but prison is no fairy-tale world. They never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile – prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, they’d show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at them – sometimes they were able to fight ‘em off, sometimes not. And that’s how it went for Plax and Vick – that was their routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for them, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of them.” – Rae “Red” Carruth

Oh – but it is funny. You see, most of us were not born with the talent to earn millions of dollars to play a game 16 weeks a year. When a few of those lucky people are so stupid to waste that talent, we laugh at their stupidity.

Sending him to prison was a complete waste of taxpayer money. How much does an ankle braclet cost? Why not just home confinement?
They would have better off to fine him the cost of the prison term that will hit us NYS taxpayers. That way, it’s a double hit- the money we saved by NOT putting him in prison and the money we gained from the fine.
Instead, he’ll just end up more bitter and broken and the world won’t be any better off.
But no, gotta prove a point, because the gun laws are SO GREAT at keeping guns off the streets. Pick up any newspaper and read the gun violence that dominates the inner-cities.

This all could have been avoided if Bloomberg didnt get out of control from the get go. Everyone talks about average Joe, but an average joe wouldnt be doing two years for this. Bloomberg should have worried about his boys he was bailing out at lehman and the rest of wall street. Those are the guys scamming us out of our life insurance and retirement funds. I guess thats ok. Granted what plax did isnt ok, but 2 years is crazy, its costing NY a lot of money while worse criminals are on the streets.

For all you self-righteous pricks criticising other people for expressing their opinion…go hug a tree, it’ll calm you down…and you believe hard enough, maybe it’ll hug you back!
I am an asshole, I know it, and I don’t care, that’s just how it is. I dislike Burress because he’s an idiot. He’s proven it time and again, and I’m GLAD he’s finally having to actually pay for all his misdeeds. The MANY fines given him by the Giants never fazed him, he’s got plenty of money, that’s why he kept showing up late to meetings. In this case however, he broke several laws while trying to look cool and impress people…and he screwed up BIG time. It’s called a ‘consequence,’ something you bleeding-heart liberals don’t understand or believe in. If more people were punished according to their crime, the world would be a better place, but because people who have never experienced a random act of violence try and help the ‘poor misunderstood’ criminal, too many people get off.
Ok, so, to end this, if you don’t agree with me…go to hell.

Not to mention that the “lesser” crime was a sadistic, cruel, violent one with many helpless victims.
And now, with still no hint of any repentance or good deeds to make up for the truly dark nature of his acts, Vick is set to star in his first NFL game as an Eagle, while Burress is off to miss the birth of his child and the early years of another child, all for a crime which, while illegal and dangerous, had no victim.
Justice, American style. Justice, Roger Goodell-style. Today’s NFL. Makes me sick.

What sucks is that he really shouldn’t be doing any time at all, but they make laws for a reason and he clearly broke the law. Do the crime, do the time. So, you are the one who wrote the Leno joke. Please, tell us more as each one gets worse and worse. Do not leave your day job. Oh, that’s right. You do not have one.

“Don’t Care for Plex, guys an idiot.
I don’t feel sorry for Plex but I don’t think the punishment fit the crime.”
That Plex guy sure has caused a world of trouble. Maybe, he is just a comPlex man. If you have seen one Plex, then you have seen them all. Do not even get me going on that Plax guy.

“Everyone talks about average Joe, but an average joe wouldnt be doing two years for this.”
You’re right about that: Average Joe would be doing the three year mandatory minimum. And let’s not forget that Burress would be doing even less time if he’d taken the deal that was originally offered.
_________________________________________________actually that law is passed whenever bloomberg feels fit or wants to make an example of someone. Do a little research, check out how much time people do in nyc for a loaded gun when its their first time offense, more than half dont. Also, if you have millions, why would you not have nice things? like a nice car, bracelet and have money on you. If you mean to tell me if you were a millionaire and still wore the same clothes and drove the same cars, you are lying

  78. Hauschild says: Sep 24, 2009 2:59 PM

Burress is so 2007! He’s history – finished.
He’s simply another thug that time will forget. There will be countless others waiting in the wings to pick up where he left off.
Is it not ironic that as this country has become “softer” and “nicer” to its citizenry via the countless programs and community organizations and simply people changing, that more of its sons and daughters have become “harder” and more corrupted and criminal???
I’m just sayin’ – it certainly aint’ rocket science.

RAIDERS757,WINKLE33 – ON MONDAY A 25 YEAR OLD MOM WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN THE BRONX AFTER SHE PUSHED HER 9 YEAR OLD CHILD UP SOME STAIRS AS GUN FIRE WAS TAKING PLACE.TWO GANG BANGER PUNKS ARE ALREADY IN CUSTODY. HERE IS MY QUESTION WOULDN’T SOME GOOD HAVE COME FROM PLAXICOS STUPID SHOOTING IF HE HAD SERVED 6 MONTHS IN JAIL, TWO YEARS PROBATION, PAY A $100,000 FINE AND THEN GO TO THE NEW YORK SCHOOLS AND TELL KIDS, HEY I DID SOMETHING DUM, GOT SHOT, SERVED 6 MONTHS, SERVE PROBATION SO PLEASE DON’T CARRY A GUN. THE PROBLEM ALSO IS BLOOMBERG DECIDED HE WOULD RUN HIS MOUTH AND MORGENTHAU WANTED TO LQQK TOUGH AS HE WALKED INTO RETIREMENT. PLAXICO DID SOMETHING DUMB AND AGAINST THE LAW BUT HE DID NOT INTEND TO COMMIT A CRIME AND HE SHOT HIMSELF, A MANDATORY 2 YEAR SENTENCE IS A LITTLE HARSH.

  81. PackerFanTastic says: Sep 24, 2009 3:31 PM

If the inmates in a NY prison welcomed a Giant player with a greeting of “Giants Suck” does that mean there are a lot of Jets fans in prison?

I think that this is an abuse of power by the judicial system. We must weigh the crime against the punishment. This was extreme in my opinion. This man doesn’t have any records or being a bad UN lawful bidding citizen. So what he wants to act like a thug, this is America and he has the right to emulates anyone he wants as long as he doesn’t break the law. Now with that being said, if he does break the law, which he did, then the punishment should fit the crime. This is the system attempting to make an example out of another young black male. The message is very clear, you can be a millionaire, but as long as your skin color is dark, you will not receive the same treatment as others of white skin complexions. I also agree with the fact that this is not a laughing matter. This is 2 years of a person life for carrying a gun that he shot himself with, not killing anyone with. If you pull a gun, you get 10 years, if you shot a person you get 20 years, if you kill a person, you get 20 to life. But this is if you are using the weapon as a mean to commit a crime. There is an such thing as being stupid, but the judicial system is suppose to be fair and just when it deals with all cases. No one in their right mind would suggest that they be locked up for two years after shooting themselves. So you don’t like him, what has he done to you for you not to like him? You don’t even know him personally, so how could you form such a negative opinion about a person that you haven’t even met? This friend is what you can call ignorant. Question for all of the happy peoples on this site that thinks that he got what he deserve.. What would you think is just if it was you? Or your kid? I promise you that your answer will not be the same.

  87. RonnieRon says: Sep 24, 2009 5:05 PM

2 years for shooting yourself is a bit accesive. He is an Idiot for sure, but i dont think he deserved a sentence like that. 6 months in prison and a couple years probation would do it, but 2 years? WOW!!! damn he got Screwed.

  88. jimmy the hat says: Sep 24, 2009 5:09 PM

Guess the other inmates were hoping for a tight end.

  89. Mariann Pepitone says: Sep 24, 2009 5:11 PM

So why did that lughead demented judge sentence him to prison for shooting himself in the leg accidently. He is allowed to carry a loaded gun in his state but NY doesn’t permit it. All the judge had to do was fine him and tell him he cannot carry a loaded gun in NY. We do have wacko judges and jurors who don’t have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. I agree with Leno. And those prisoners in the first cell who gave him a rude welcome hate the fact that he is a celebrity and they are nothing and always will be nothing. His lawyer should take it to appeals court and they should release him ASAP. He doesn’t deserve that injustice.

  90. RonnieRon says: Sep 24, 2009 5:14 PM

I dont get it. Why are these atheltes hanging out at Clubs anyway? You have way to much money to do that. bring the party to you, you can afford it. Going to a club where lo lifes hang out and are on the prowl for young rich men means disaster. Stay home do something cool instead of trying to flaunt who you are. You may think its cool that folks will wisper to there friends there is so and so he plays for so and so. Jokers are jealous and they dont like it when you “make it” and want to take what you have or embarass you. You think katz are gonna be all up in your grill wanting an autograph when on the real they are plotting your robbery or even your death. Stay away from the Clubs, do like the white boyz do, GO HOME and hang with your Family. they got the right idea and im black.

I’m not a Giants fan but it was nice to see them beat New England in the Superbowl. I also think Leno’s joke was funny. Maybe not all that great but funny. And I think all pro athletes are way over paid.
I don’t think Burress should have gotten 2 years for what he did. I’ve done a lot worse things than this and was fortunate I didn’t get caught. I wasn’t dumb enough to shoot myself. There are people breaking into houses and beating old people and getting less time behind bars than this. An example needs to be set but not one this extreme for this crime. Hope he’s smart enough to get an attorney to appeal and maybe only do 6 months. Look at what Vic did and how much time did he get?

  95. Richm2256 says: Sep 24, 2009 11:28 PM

NinerNation, I was going to post, but I can’t improve on what you wrote. Only thing I can add is for the morons who parrot the “he didn’t shoot anyone but himself” crap…
That he shot only himself was not an intentional act on his part. It was pure fate, happenstance, call it what you want, that he didn’t blow the brains out of an innocent bystander when that gun fell out. If he had, every single one of you douchebags would be calling for the electric chair.
He deserves the time in prision, I only wish I believed it would serve him some good, but it won’t.

  96. DoomsdayD94 says: Sep 26, 2009 10:29 AM

@stinemonster – overpaid? Would you rather all the money go to the already rich owners? These guys go out there day-in and day-out and put their bodies on the line. As some have mentioned here, we only wish we could have their talent. We, the fans, pay for this kind of entertainment and for memorabilia. The least we could ask for is that “your” team puts out a good product on the field.
Also, many of you are saying this is harsh/unfair. I hope you realize that not all state law is uniform. If you have a problem with something, write to state legislature instead of whining about unfairness.
