Crabtree freezes out his teammates

After the 49ers unexpectedly upset the Cardinals in Week One, we heard that some players believed based on conversations with unsigned first-rounder Michael Crabtree that Crabtree was thinking about caving in and taking the deal that the Niners have put on the table.

Crabtree apparently has since strengthened his resolve.  Or, at a minimum, he has engineered his life to remove the potential temptations.

Per ESPN's Colleen Dominguez, Crabtree has changed his phone number.

Dominguez also reports on SportsCenter that several players don't know if Crabtree is coming aboard, and they don't care if he ever does.

Meanwhile, receiver Josh Morgan says that coach Mike Singletary has created a culture that's "just like the movie Remember The Titans."

So it could be that Crabtree will continue to have "zero fun, sir."

Florio, you keep posting articles like this one, you'll end up being the equivalent of a sideline reporter who watches Sports Center instead of a game. Better get a goofy fur coat and matching hat.

  2. Leathaface2g says: September 25, 2009 7:07 AM

He's not signing with the 49ers. He's gonna wait to be traded next March.

  3. RagnarHater24 says: September 25, 2009 7:12 AM

I hope this Ahole never plays in the NFL. This guy and/or his agent are truly delusional.

  4. Rickah99 says: September 25, 2009 7:26 AM

Somewhere Jerry Rice is shaking his head ruefully!! I this bum sits out the season, re-enters next year's draft and falls out of the top 10...or better yet: falls into the second round! Of course, maybe he's rolling the dice on next year being an uncapped year! Would that affect a rookie's salary?

  5. stopwest says: September 25, 2009 7:27 AM

Looks like Crabtree needs to lose a year and a few guaranteed million before he gains some common sense.

Let's be honest though, when he finally makes it into the NFL his level of play will ultimately dictate his history. If he's a bust, he goes down as the ultimate a-hole, a greedy bastard who should've shut up taken what he could've gotten.

But if he's as good as he says he is, his holdout will be become a footnote, pregame conversation fodder for probowl announcers—and the heat will be squarely shouldered by the 49ers (and arguably the Raiders, but who expects anything different from Davis) and their inability to sign him.

    "Crabtree freezes out his teammates"

    *********

What teammates? He has never signed a contract.

  7. SteelerNC says: September 25, 2009 7:56 AM

How can you say he is freezing out his teammates? He's not on the team. No practice. No contract. He's a punk without a team!!

  8. Rex Grossman says: September 25, 2009 7:57 AM

Take it easy on the guy, he probably just can't afford the phone bill anymore.

  9. Quagmire says: September 25, 2009 7:58 AM

Whether it's the agent, or player, that is asking for the sky...at the end of the day, the agent works for the player.

Looking more & more like we'll see him go in round 2, next year, unless crazy uncle Al, or Plowboy Jerry take him in the 1st.

  10. wydok says: September 25, 2009 8:02 AM

I really need to see that movie.

  11. nosleN boB says: September 25, 2009 8:29 AM

Freezing does not get rid of crabs. You need special shampoo and a really tiny comb.

  12. Bob Nelson says: September 25, 2009 8:41 AM

    Incorrect headline.

Crabtree is no a teammate. He is in no way a part of the team or under contract to any part of the NFL.

  13. Duan says: September 25, 2009 8:51 AM

I don't agree with paying attention to anything this guy (Crabtree) does?

It's just like a kid in the grocery store, who shouting/screaming that they want a particular item - a smart parent ignores them and says "okay sweetie, um hmm, I got you okay, daddy has to go over here and get some beer" and you keep walking.

I am not a Niner fan, but I hope they win out and I hope this faggot misses the cut, then he will be sitting there looking like Boo Boo the Fool!

  14. HarrisonHits says: September 25, 2009 8:54 AM

How can they be his teammates if he's never joined the team ?

  15. tv says: September 25, 2009 9:02 AM

Hopefully, this guy will be blackballed from the league. Maybe stocking shelves at his local WalMart will get him to clue in to what it is all about.

  16. thornton80 says: September 25, 2009 9:08 AM

I really can’t stand this terd….. He hasn’t played one down in the NFL and he wants more than the veterans that have proven themselves.

Something is truly wrong with this system. I wish he could be made an example out of during next years draft, but we all know Jerry Jones & the Cowgirls will snatch him up quick.

I am putting Michael Crabtree & Kanye West in the same category as Stupid, Immature, Spoiled, Arrogant, Prick, Inconsiderate, and flat out Retarded!!!!

Go ahead and get his jersey ready Jerry Jones, and tell you little puppy Deion Sanders that he has been a good boy for telling Crabtree to sit out the entire year so he can be a Dallas Cowgirl.

  17. jimmySee says: September 25, 2009 9:08 AM

Maybe it is not a matter of changing the number -- maybe the phone was shut off for lack of payment.

What's he doing these days for $$$, working at 7-11?

  18. svanablak says: September 25, 2009 9:14 AM

din't know he was still playin' for texas tech??? he sho' let his "teammates" down against texas last saturday! and, naw he ain' boo boo da fool, he's sam sausagehead! he needs ta check history, mike williams and that stupid-ass RB from ohio state, they thought the same thing!

  19. Play4Blood says: September 25, 2009 9:16 AM

Crabtree, I'm really happy for you and Imma let you finish, but Darius Hayward-Bey got one of the craziest rookie contracts of all time!

    What? Not helping?

  20. marcduke says: September 25, 2009 9:26 AM

How sweet would it be - if Crabtree holds out until next year's draft - to have the CBA restructured to include a Rookie salary cap?

  21. tre_fizzle says: September 25, 2009 9:28 AM

He has endorsement deals with EA Sports, Subway, Jordan...I don't think he's hurting too much, but he definitely doesn't have 16 million in his pocket

  22. VoxVeritas says: September 25, 2009 9:35 AM

You really can't blame him for not wanting to play in SF. Come on. The San Francisco area is probably the most retarded section of north America. Taxes are out of this world. They tax you into oblivion and provide very little bang for your buck. Try getting an efficiency apartment there, it'll run you $1500-$2000 per month. Plus it's a bush-league franchise, they've been busted multiple times for cheating, and all that cheating has gotten them losing records for the better part of the last decade. Perennial losers in what has to be one of the worst if not THE worst division in the NFL. 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks, Rams, that division is the NFL equivalent of the Special Olympics. They may be the toughest kid in the special ed class this year after beating the Tardinals and Seatards but NFL-caliber opponents await in future weeks.

  23. Duan says: September 25, 2009 9:57 AM

marcduke - OH that would be so classic!!!!!!!!

I didn't even think about that, but they are talking like that is going to take a few years, just like a college playoff system.

They need to hurry up and implement that, you have to do it sooner or later, so just fix it and be done with it.

  24. ItalianArmyGuy says: September 25, 2009 9:57 AM

For a guy who was the best college receiver in years, he sure gets a lot of hate. So, he doesn't want to play the next 5 or 6 years for a crappy 49er team before he can get with a good organization. Can you blame him? He's probably better off sitting on the sidelines for a year than getting the snot kicked out of him while he tries to catch horrid pass attempts from Hill or Smith, or whatever other cheap clown SF suits up and calls a qb. I'm sure Jerry Jones would take him first round next year - and from the looks of things, Jerry might have a pretty high draft pick, LOL

  25. TorVikeFan says: September 25, 2009 9:59 AM

Unfortunately for Crabtree, there is no medicine for the stupid.

  26. RayDaMayor says: September 25, 2009 9:59 AM

Crabtree is a tool. And to SF fans, could there be a bigger douchebag?

And if the NFL owners are smart, which most are, there is no way Crabtree is going to bust the slotting system for pay. If he does, it's free ally in future drafts.

  27. FinFan says: September 25, 2009 10:04 AM

The league should make an example of him and not pick him up if he sits out an entire year.

  28. eldestructo says: September 25, 2009 10:15 AM

    @VoxVeritas

Say what you want about the NFC West, but they have sent a team to the Super Bowl four times in the last ten years. NFC East? Three. NFC South? Two. NFC North? One.

  29. scrapdawg12 says: September 25, 2009 10:23 AM

I really want this guy to sign with the Niners so we all can see him pull down his pants and Singletary gives him a spanking with a paddle with holes in it. This kid needs to grow up. Crabtree needs to realize that if he wants to play football, that this is his only chance basically. Next year, he will not get drafted high. Everybody who will be in the top 10 has WR's that stink. If the Jets want him, 20th or later pick.

  30. bearsrule says: September 25, 2009 10:25 AM

I can't wait to watch him fall into the second round on Draft Day next year.

  31. Fan_Of_ Four says: September 25, 2009 10:26 AM

Wydok, you are missing out brother, it was a great football movie.

  32. Silver&Black666 says: September 25, 2009 10:29 AM

There has to be a couple teams that are telling him they will take him next year if he re-enters.

Agents are too greedy to pass up money.

    (Jets, Cowboys)

  33. StevieMo says: September 25, 2009 10:39 AM

I'm here to advise Michael Crabtree:

Michael, it has been rumored that you want somewhere in the range of top 3 to top 5 money because you were the best player in the draft and fell to #10 for reasons that were beyond your control (you had a foot injury plus you're an absolute dick). You obviously should have been a top 3 pick, if not the first pick.

Why shouldn't you get a deal exceeding the one Matthew Stafford received? You've got to think BIG. You're simply not being ambitious enough.

Just tell the Niners that you should have been 6'3" instead of 6'1" and you should have run the 40 in 4.4 rather than 4.6. You should have played in a pro-style offense. You also should have had a great attitude and you should care more about the team than you do your own little tampon.

Since you should be all of these things, you should ask for $44 million guaranteed.

FLORIO! Usually you're little sign-off line at the end sucks. I can routinely look forward to reading an article and laughing out loud at your pathetic attempt at humor at the conclusion.

    But that one was good.

  35. Leto_II says: September 25, 2009 10:47 AM

This guy is awesome. I can't wait for him to sit out the entire offseason and get fat and slow like Mike Williams. At least we'll get to see him in the UFL.

  36. SmackMyVickUp says: September 25, 2009 10:54 AM

Singletary is winning games as a coach and his players respond to him.

Espn(? forgot where I saw it) reported that Crabtree has a 6 figure endorsement portfolio that includes nike, ea sports, subway and a trading card game.
    Is this just a rumor?

Silly thought that he actually might. He can sit out a season but he is drastically hurting his chances at ever becoming more than a diva. He would have to put up all-pro numbers consistently to drop that label.

  37. redsquare says: September 25, 2009 10:55 AM

    @StevieMo - brilliant! :)

  38. FearMe says: September 25, 2009 11:10 AM

The flip side is that he could get picked by the Raiders at the top of the second round and get paid even less. The will probably be picking first in 2010 draft

  39. jimmySee says: September 25, 2009 11:25 AM

"Try getting an efficiency apartment there, it'll run you $1500-$2000 per month."

Hey VoxVeritas -- I don't think that's what stopped him from signing. He could afford that efficiency!

  40. barleyfreak says: September 25, 2009 12:47 PM

He's going to sign during the bye week. That gives him time to cram, and the first two games after the bye are on the (fan friendly) road.

If he can make anything good happen in either of those two games, the home fan rage will be slightly less. Slightly.

  41. CowboyHater says: September 25, 2009 2:03 PM

I used to give a damn, but they have a patch for that now.

  42. FumbleNuts says: September 25, 2009 2:06 PM

Crabtree is just a rebel without a clue!

  43. SeaOtter says: September 25, 2009 2:49 PM

Say what you like about Eric Mangini, but he sure had this guy pegged. OTOH, Mike Leach comes out of this looking the worse for wear - who is going to listen to him about a player ever again? I love Leach's offense, but going to bat for a guy whom he knew deep down was a diva was dumb. It just hurt Leach's rep, and that of future Texas Tech grads.

  44. USMC Ret. says: September 25, 2009 4:17 PM

We only hope one day that a single NFL, NBA or MLB team will grow a couple and let people like Crabtree understand why a certain $$ amount was establsihed depending on where you are drafted.

I only wish the 49ers let him sit out and let him re-enter the draft to see what team will waste a top ten 1st round pick on what appears to be another "TO" like selfish individual.

    What a selfsih crybaby!!!!!!!

  45. TheBeatdown says: September 25, 2009 7:53 PM

Maybe he had to change his number because Tatum Bell hooked him up with a fat new phone.
