Kubiak takes veiled shots at Slaton

Earlier this week, Texans coach Gary Kubiak took a subtle jab at starting tailback Steve Slaton, expressing regret that Houston didn't sign free agent Cedric Benson this offseason.

"We had our chance with Cedric.  It just didn't work out," Kubiak said.  "We've got people to run the ball.   But they have to run the ball better.  You know, hindsight is 20-20.  We've got to play with the people we've got."

Slaton has arguably been the league's worst running back through two games.  He's fumbled three times and averaged a putrid 2.0 yards per carry (least among runners with 15 or more attempts).

Friday, Kubiak was at it again, saying he wants backup Ryan Moats more involved.

"I'd like to see [Moats] get some touches in the game," Kubiak said.  "We have operated this week assuming that he may get some touches.  He's been doing his job and playing well on special teams."

Either Kubiak is serious (we'll know Sunday), or he's trying to light a fire in Slaton.  It's worth noting that Slaton's college production dropped after a heavy sophomore-year workload.  In his first NFL season, Slaton touched the ball 318 times, more than he ever did at West Virginia.

Most likely, however, Slaton's slow start is merely the result of two difficult matchups (vs. the Jets, at Tennessee).  Expect him to get it going Sunday against the Jaguars.

Benson? Moats? Gary, average RBs are fungible. Good ones are not.

"The way you perform make them feel about you different."

Bastard better start performing, he was a highly touted fantasy pick and I wasted a pick on him.

I am surprised that Florio would allow this article. I am serious too. Obviously he didnt write it, because Steve Slaton played for West Virginia, and no West Virginia player could EVER be a bust. Make a deal with you Florio- i wont harrass you about Slaton as long as you shutup about Bush. At least Bush does other things. Slaton looks terrible this year.

Kubiak is a joke as a head coach!!! This is the same guy that TOLD SLATON TO GAIN WEIGHT DURING THE OFFSEASON. Now you take a veiled shot at him because he started out slow. Who was the tool that told him to gain weight.........OH YOU!!!!. TOOL. Leave it to the Texans to draft a slasher and try to turn him into a power back. We here in Houston only have to endure one more 8-8 season and your ass is gone anyway!!!!

Better pick up Moats in your fantasy footlball league as insurance.

You really should watch the video of the presser. The only regret Kubiak was expressing was having to answer a really bizarre and off the wall question from that reporter.

I wrote about it here if anyone cares to read about it.

There are no veiled anythings when it comes to Kubiak. I think Slaton knows exactly where he stands with coach. He needs to run better and hang on to the ball.

Gary Kubiak has made himself a permanent enemy of that Mike Florio guy. All WVU players are um, like, not to be dissed no matter the um, like, circumstances. They are more sacred than cows are to Indians. Indians from India, not the indigenous Injuns of the U.S., whose very homeland was pillaged and plundered from them by the evil paleface invaders from across the abyss of God's tears. But they got their own casinos now, which makes up for all the treachery.

    Steve Slaton > Reggie Bush

    Thank you Evan Silva,

Florio could not have written an article that even tangentially criticized Slaton -- the poor man's Reggie Bush.

where did my comment go? is that the florio-west virginia rule? figures

If he is so unhappy with Slaton, then he can easily trade him.

I'm sure several teams would love to take Slaton off the Texans hands...

Who the F is Evan Silva ? Wait, don't answer - you will not be around for long. Talking smack about Florio's dreamy boy toy? Basically saying he is worse than Reggie Bush. Uh OH, you have not been paying attention Evan.

Evan, save your job its not too late. Just do a find and replace and replace Slaton with Bush and Kubiak with Florio. You are welcome.

    Ryan Torain.

    Drafted by Mike Shanahan? Check
Flashed some ability or talent? Check
Recently released by the Broncos? Check

    Sounds tailor-made for Kubiak...
