Fine for Tyrone Carter, no fine for James Harrison (yet)

The early-season contributions to the Human Fund continue.

In last week’s Steelers-Bears games, two possible fine-worthy incidents occurred.  But only one fine was imposed.

Pittsburgh safety Tyrone Carter has $5,000 less in his bank account for blowing up Chicago tight end Greg Olsen, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Bouchette reports that linebacker James Harrison wasn’t fined for hitting Bears quarterback Jay Cutler low, even though the action drew a flag during the game.

“He said that I lunged into his knees,” Harrison said as to the explanation he received from the official who called the penalty.  “I’m telling you what he told me.  That’s
why he threw the flag.  I said I got dragged down.”

Harrison said he was held 8 times…I knew there was a reason for him not getting any (0, notta, zilch, null, etc…) sacks this year….at least he has made up for it with unsportsmanlike penalties…

No Fun League…this fining of players is getting insane, Carter made a clean football hit.
And as for James, 8 times may be rounding it down. He gets held 40-50% of the time.

There is something to be said for the old addage.”there is holding on every play”. That being said, the officials should keep a close eye on the guy or guys blocking the Defensive Player of the Year. Since offenses will be doing EVERYTHING possible to stop that guy.

  4. AmishGangsta says: Sep 26, 2009 8:56 AM

Meh. Harrison should try being Dwight Freeney for a day. I’ve never SEEN anyone held as much as Freeney.

  5. NelsonLRodriguez says: Sep 26, 2009 9:00 AM

James Harrison is a piece of human scum. If I was a referee, I wouldn’t call holding for him either.

  6. HJC says: Sep 26, 2009 9:11 AM

Why was Carter fined? For playing with too much passion and energy?

  7. HJC says: Sep 26, 2009 9:17 AM

And the hypocrisy of it all continues. CBS must have shown that replay 4 times in a row at different angles and different speeds because it was one of their “highlights”. While the NFL is “selling” this play, they are penalizing the players. What a bunch of cowardly pussies.

  8. SteelHammer92 says: Sep 26, 2009 9:34 AM

Since when did the league start fining people for hitting too hard? What the hell is going on?

I was watching the game at a bar (I live in OH, neither the Ravens game or Steelers game was telivised on “normal” TV here).
Two Ravens fans (and one Bengals fan) were at the table next to me, all of them having way too much fun at my expense as the game unfolded.
After one of the blatant holds on Harrison that wasn’t called, one of the Ravens fans actually said to me – “he gets held more without it being called than any other player I’ve ever seen”. I said “Are you serious?”, and he said “Yes”. He still never stopped harassing me, but I did at least admire him being objective about it.
I’m not using it as an excuse for Harrison, just pointing out that there are actually some people other than Steelers homers who think he gets held a lot without it being called.

    This is no story.
Just more cheap shots by Steeler players.
That happens nearly every week so where’s the story?
Try covering things that don’t happen all the time.

  12. VoxVeritas says: Sep 26, 2009 10:31 AM

Of course you’re going to see him get held if you focus on him. It happens on every play, every game. Suck it up, pussies.

  13. Lombardi 6 says: Sep 26, 2009 10:40 AM

Actually i counted 10 times that the reinging Defensive Player of the Year, and owner of the The best play ever made in a Super Bowl was held..

  14. Ravenmaniac says: Sep 26, 2009 11:01 AM

Mborz…..as they say, holding could be called on every play….do you honestly think that harrison gets held any more than Suggs, Freeney, even woodley??
Face it, if T. Suggs was complaining of being held and did not have a sack yet this year, ALL steelers fans would be saying he was whining!!! When a player says I PROBABLY could have sacked the QB if I wasnt held…..sounds like an excuse.

  15. ItalianArmyGuy says: Sep 26, 2009 11:11 AM

Man, that was some hit by Carter!

  16. gobearsgo says: Sep 26, 2009 11:14 AM

Olsen said he was disappointed that Carter got fined…he said he thought it was a good, clean football hit.
He had another hit from Carter (across the middle) that was probably more questionable, in my very unprofessional opinion.
Was Harrison held? Duh. It happens all the time. At least he didn’t get grabbed, spun, and tackled to the ground like Hillenmeyer did when Mendenhall ran 39 yards in one play. Or get clothes-lined and chop-blocked like Alex Brown did, and injured because of a dirty move.
Neither of them complained about it, because it’s football. Grow up, Harrison. If you let your pitbull attack your son, you are an idiot, and I could care less what you have to say…

  17. VoxVeritas says: Sep 26, 2009 11:26 AM

James Harrison PROBABLY could have given me fries with that if he hadn’t been roided up.

I’m not the one who said it, a Ravens fan that I had never met before did. You’d have to ask him the question that your asking me.

  19. Mike Dunbar says: Sep 26, 2009 11:43 AM

There will be no fine because there shouldn’t have been a flag. He was blocked (dragged down or held) into Cutler.

Vox, did you mean when Harrison should have got you some fries when he did this to you?

We finally know the real identity of Vox – he is a fat, drunk Cleveland Browns fan

As Ravens fans know complaining about calls will get you no where (losing in the playoffs to the eventual super bowl champions from your own division).
I agree that Harrison gets held a bit,but the same thing happened to him last year and he found a way to be ultra-successful getting to the qb. He needs to find a way to do the same thing this year.
About the Carter fine…at least he was close enough to hit someone on that play as opposed to the 3 times he got beat that eventually cost the Steelers the game.
Visions of James Harrison rumbling down the field in Super Bowl 43 get you upset? You mad?

It’s alright, Vox. At least the teams that Harrisons’ played on have managed to, oh I don’t know, win a playoff game since 1996? I couldn’t imagine how pissy and whiny I’d be if the team whose nuts I rode hadn’t even managed to win a playoff game since 1996, especially when it looks like that team probably won’t be winning another game this year, either. Probably fairly pissy and whiny, though.

I know, but he’s gotta play in Pittsburgh, dirtiest city in the NFL. Everything has it’s trade-offs, I guess.

First off, Bravo steelers fans. you’ve managed to take another discussion and turn it into a “Lets talk about how great the steelers WERE till everyone acknowledges how great we are” love fest.
Anyways, the first hit AND the second hit were illegal. Can’t lead with the crown of the helmet on a receiver. come on guys this isn’t the bush leagues, this has been a rule for a while now.
James harrison went low, he didn’t have to, if he was dragged down then it stops right there. He put in a second effort to attack cutler’s knees. Hope he gets a three hundred pound lineman roll on his HGH enhanced knee and see how it feels.

  25. Jabberwocky says: Sep 26, 2009 1:38 PM

If anyone wants to see a “real” hold, check out the replay of Mendenhall’s long dash to the tw0 yard line. Hillenmeyer was absolutely assaulted on the play; the OG basically grabbed his jersey around the shoulder pads, spun him, and threw him to the ground. Huge play, considering the Steelers scored a TD just moments later.
Harrison is just a little bitter that his ego has taken a hit so far this season.

  26. dracula58 says: Sep 26, 2009 2:39 PM

Vox, who you kiddin? If you came face to face with James Harrison, you’d wet your pants. LMAO

  27. Jabberwocky says: Sep 26, 2009 3:38 PM

Steeler players and fans can’t complain about calls not going their way. When it matters most, they’ve got the benefit of some crucial penalty calls in the SB.
