Packers OL shuffle should be a concern

Through two games, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been sacked a league-high 10 times. And with the Green Bay offensive line going through big changes this week thanks to an injury to left tackle Chad Clifton, the pressure is on a patchwork group to keep Rodgers upright against the Rams on Sunday.

The injury to Clifton — a high ankle sprain — forced Green Bay to send left guard Darryn Colledge outside during last week’s game with the Bengals. Colledge got taken to school by the Bengals Antwan Odom, who finished the day with a fairly impressive five sacks.

Colledge will be back at left tackle again this week while center Jason Spitz moves to Colledge’s left guard spot. Scott Wells moves into Spitz’ place.

Earlier this week, Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy stridently promised capable play from his offensive line, saying, “Oh, they’re going to rise to the challenge. And they need to. And we all do, starting with me. We’re going down there to play football the way we’re supposed to play football, OK? We didn’t play very good last week. And that’s last week. We’re 1-1 and we’re excited about this opportunity in St. Louis.”

After their Cutler-aided, season-opening win over the Bears, Green Bay got stunned at home by Cincinnati last week. The Pack really needs this one tomorrow at St. Louis. If they fail there, it will be a long, bleak week leading up to their game at Minnesota where an old dude with an axe to grind awaits.

Damn, that was actually good! Almost ominous feeling.
    Great quote!

“Through two games, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been sacked a league-high 10 times.”
Rodgers holds on to the ball way to long. He is not the only QB in the league getting constant pressure, but he sure is getting sacked the most. Maybe it is inexperience, but his slow recognition of defenses is slowing down his read progression. Once he gets rid of the ball quicker, things should improve. Sure, you don’t get those glamorous down field passes, but you do move the chains and put points on the board.
Now on to the OLine, no surprise there. Since Ted Thompson blew up the line when he first arrived, the OLine has been a very low priority for him. And it shows.

Agree the OL is something to watch out for against Ram.
But its next Monday when the Viking D will expose these guys in front of a wider audience.

Just remember that old dude Jimmy Johnson had an axe to grind too and got beaten 29-10 and 20-0 in his only two tries. The NFL revenge factor is overrated.

I had to scroll up to make sure it wasn’t Florio trashing the Packers again, but same result anyway…”Cutler aided season opening win…?” What a douchebag…the Packers’ defense won that game…the Packers led for most of the game, held of the Bears when it counted and Aaron Rodgers took advantage of a brain fart on defense and threw a TD to Jennings. If you think Cutler shit the bed and that’s why the Packers won, you are a complete douchebag.

  8. Majik Man says: Sep 26, 2009 10:43 PM

    Tundrastruck,
Are you serious? “The Packers’ defense won that game”? They gave up 350 yards to a team that threw 4 picks. Cutler didn’t aid them in victory, he flat out gave them the win. 3 of those picks were thrown directly at the defender, they had to catch them in self defense. If Nathan Vasher doesn’t fall down, the Pack is 0-2.
The Packer’s D didn’t win that game by any means, they just didn’t try as hard as Cutler did to lose. Anybody who thinks that awful defense won that game is a complete douchebag.

I am as die hard Packer fan as they come but yeah, I agree Packers D-Line need to stop being big vaginas and be Men and do what they are being payed to do! No excuses there so go ahead Packer O-Line stop being little girls, big pu$$ys whatever do your phuckin job! If you lose tomorrow you Packers O-line will have proven all of us right, that you guys are big pink, tacos over-loaded with sconny cheese!

What should Thompson have done in recent years? Rivera was awful on the Cowboys and Wahle was cut by Carolina. I’m with you if you say we needed an OL instead of taking Harrell a few years ago, but what else?

The O Line shuffle has been an on going thing since Thompsons arrival. Thompson has tried fixing it with guys off the street, guys off of practice squads, guys who nobody else wanted and and bunch of 6 & 7 th round draft picks. Fan of Football is spot on, Karen Rodgers is partially to blame, she does indeed hold on to the ball way longer than she should. When Karen gets her lights put out, then maybe Tight Teddy will address the problem but I doubt it. In five years he has managed to draft one bona-fide difference maker and that’s Jennings.

It’s the Rams, no pass rush, no secondary. This should not be any kind of test at all for the packer line.

I’ll bet you said the same thing about cincy.
Despise the rams if you want, but remember that the level of competition in the NFL is fairly close, the rams have a new coach, and they’ve really got to thinking they’ve got a good shot after the pack got beat by cincy. if GB wins this game, they’ve done nothing special by beating a bad team, but if they lose it, how in the hell are morons like dbag nelson and jimmy going to stand by the fact that the packers 3-4 is the greatest in the league and a-rod = greatest QB ever to be in GB?

    I’d agree with you but…
… the green bay O-line got blown up by the BENGALS last week. Did you hear me. THE BENGALS. Antwan Odom received a 33% increase on his career sack total in one game, he only had 3 sacks last year.
Chris Long isn’t great, but I’d take him over any starter on Cincy’s D-line any day of the week

  18. Mike McCarthy's Moobs says: Sep 27, 2009 3:00 AM

The Packers sure could have used some of that $17.902 million in cap money on a free agent O-Lineman or two, couldn’t they? What is Ted Thompson using that money for? To pay his bar tab at the XS Nightclub?

  19. nerd says: Sep 27, 2009 4:29 AM

Ted Thompson got the type of offensive linemen Mike McCarthy wanted. And still wants. “Smaller, quicker” offensive linemen.
Which is why the team underperforms.
Aaron Rodgers is a very good QB, btw. He’s held onto the ball a bit long a couple times, but he’s just trying to make things happen. He’s been running for his life.

What a lot of you DUMB@#%^ fail to realize is that Rodgers has had his Mid-to short reads taken away from him because of the lack of offensive line…….IF Finley is available for the “dump”, Rodgers would not have just two reads(Driver, Jennings)……that said, our D needs to step up against the run!

    Abysmal o-line
    No d- line
    questionable linebackers
    bad secondary
    no running back
This is going to b a long, long, long road back to respectability for Pack faithful.
Trust me, you are in deep shit.
In the past I’ve spoken candidly about the obvious on this site and was met by some mean spirited and sophomoric opposition.

Do you realize the Karen Rodgers bit isn’t even slightly funny? IMaybe it was 15 years ago when Rome did it to Everett, but not today. It makes your posts unreadable, and makes you look ignorant.

ok, if the Packers beat the Vikings next week, does it put the old canard to bed?

  24. radioboy20010 says: Sep 27, 2009 10:29 AM

The guy above has been drinking Vikings Kool-Aid too long. Perhaps he can explain how one of the most talented teams in the league constantly under achieves? Didn’t think so. Perhaps he was on the Love Boat too long, or can’t figure out how they lost four Super Bowls. Now they hire the Tin Man(code name Brent Gump, as in “Brent, we’ll never forget you”, and Gump, as in Forrest Gump, the southern idiot that only cultists still think is cool) to throw 10 yard passes and hand off to Adrian Peterson(neither of whom will finish the year on the active roster).
And then there’s Chilly, who was a plane ride away from being Packers coach, thank goodness that flight never happened. The butt-heads in “The Cities”(that magical place-to them-where only smart, rich people live, with highly superior intelligences only realized by them and like snobs) seem to forget their new hero blew up Green Bay, blew up the Jets, and if the pattern holds true…and in the end, if the Vikings beat Green Bay, so what? They are incapable of anything great because the entire organization is made of recycled lutefisk.

What, are you 10 years old or something?
Why is it with you packer fans that when youre team is doing well, you are unbearable to be around. but when they suck, like this year, then we have to listen to the Superbowl stories?
See, it’s typical lame ass argument to fall back on, you cannot ever admit your team is bad.
By the way, your joke about “Brent” was obvious. there was no need of explaining it. It also was a lame attempt at humor.
How exactly did he “blow up” those teams? Whenever I call out Karen for not finishing games, I’m told it’s a team game. Now when Favre’s teams lose it’s all HIS fault? Hypocritical much?
I’m going to cut you a break, because obviously you have trouble putting a sentence together, and I know, that like most other Packer fans , you’re scared, as well you should be.

  27. Packer Pete says: Sep 27, 2009 11:12 AM

Rodgers held onto the ball because of the play calling. With a TE and RB pass blocking and only three receivers running long (10+ yards) routes, Rodgers had no check off receiver to get the ball to. I would have liked to have seen some 4 or even 5 receiver sets with some quick hitters and drag routes to alleviate the pass rush. Despite the ten sacks and numerous QB hits, Rodgers has yet to suffer a turnover. That last guy, what’s his name, would have tossed 4 picks by now.
Colledge was responsible for 2 of the 5 sacks registered by Deacon Jones Jr.
The Packer D Line wasn’t to blame for the Bengals’ rushing success. In the 3-4, the D line is supposed to occupy O linemen, leaving the backers to make the tackles. Against the Bengals, the Packer backers, especially the interior two, consistently overpursued the run action laterally, abandoning their gap responsibilities and leaving easy cutbacks for Benson that resulted in numerous 5 to 8 yard gains. I’ll be interested in seeing if that gap discipline improves this week.
Finally, here’s my moronic football analysis for the Cro-Magnon types that make up half the readers on this site: that guy’s a pussy, and that other guy’s name is Sally.

The O-Line shuffle has been going on for 3 years now. Even the one time we actually WERE in the playoffs under Ted, the line was changed up once a week. Face it Mac, ZBS sucks. It’s only ever been run effectively once, by Shanahan, and we all saw how that ended up in the long run.
Want to fix the line? Trade one of our worthless linebackers plus a 2nd for Incognito or someone similar, then sign Runyan the next day, cut Barbie, change the scheme to one where linemen actually block, call more running plays to open up the passing game, and look: problem solved. That’s a 10-6 team easily.
Now someone PLEASE tell me why a simple fan can figure this out and the former NFL Executive of the Year can’t. Then tell me why that worthless bluehaired asshead still has a job!!
