Freeney heard "something pop"

The complete team effort by the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night in their 31-10 win over the Cardinals was perhaps the most impressive performance of the day.

But the win could come with a gigantic asterisk if defensive end Dwight Freeney is seriously injured.

Freeney reportedly “heard something pop” in his quadriceps during a play in the third quarter against Arizona, according to the Associated Press.  It was one of the few plays all night Freeney wasn’t making Kurt Warner run for his life; Freeney was a blocker when he got hurt.

Before the injury, Freeney hit Warner four times, including two sacks and a forced fumble.

“They were trying to single block him,” said defensive end Robert Mathis.

The performance was a reminder that Freeney is almost as important to the Colts defense as Peyton Manning is to their offense.  Freeney will undergo an MRI Monday to determine the severity of the injury.

Wow…if he’s out for a while…and Bob Sanders continues to be Bob Sanders…they got themselves a major problem. Losing Dwight Freeney could be a season killer.

That D-line effort last night was insane. Why do they suck so bad come playoff time? Losing to the 8-8 Chargers last year – are you kidding me? Maybe now that my beloved former Super Bowl winning Steeler player/coach Dungy has taken off the headset, maybe they can finally amp it up consistently in the playoffs and be the team they should have been this past decade.

On the Colts post game show last night he said he thought it was fine, and the MRI was just procosionary.

Colts young receivers are doing well enough. Time to give Hank Baskett the boot and place another DE on the active roster.

We need Dwight, alot, however, not for the next few weeks….We will be fine against the seahawks, and Titans we should do OK against, then the bye week….As long as he can go in 3 weeks, that’s key. I’d even sit him out this weekend as a precaution since the hawks are garbage….INDY ’09!

According to USA Today, he “felt something pop” rather than hearing it pop.
The article also states that it happened while he was being held by a blocker, not while being a blocker.

“Freeney was in the midst of a monster game, with two of the Colts’ four sacks, a tackle for a loss, a forced fumble and four quarterback hurries. He said he was hurt on a play in which he was held by a blocker and “felt something pop.””

Well, pack in the season if DFree is out for an extended period. 2nd most important player on the team, by a long shot, and there is no pass rush without him. They’ll just double Mathis and pass at will.
Warner gave up last night, just completely gave up. Its been a long time since I’ve seen a qb so thoroughly beaten down and Freeney was the biggest reason for that.
