Patriots pick up Wilfork insurance

The early signs regarding Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork’s injury are good, but that doesn’t mean Wilfork is sure to play this week against the Ravens.

To help bolster their depth, the Patriots signed a massive insurance policy Monday in former Raider defensive tackle Terdell Sands, as first reported by ESPNBoston.com’s Mike Reiss.

Sands is a 6’7”, 335-pound run plugger that the Raiders once thought enough of to give a $4 million signing bonus.  Sands’ subsequent level of play did not match his contract size and Sands was cut in September.

To make room on the roster, the Patriots cut linebacker Preston Prescott Burgess, acquired in a trade for a conditional draft pick from Baltimore a week ago. Since Burgess didn’t last long with the team, the Patriots will not give up a pick.

While the Patriots may lose Wilfork for a short time, linebacker Jerod Mayo appears to be making progress towards a return to the lineup.

Last seen on crutches, Mayo walked without a limp through the locker room Monday, according to Ian Rapaport of the Boston Herald.  Mayo is recovering from a sprained MCL injury and his timetable to return to the team is unclear.

All these former Raiders…and the Pats are already reeling a bit. This could bite them in the ass.
In the past, they’ve been able to bring in one or two malcontents and get them on the program. I think they’re pushing their luck at this point, though.
Bring in enough unmotivated players, and you’ll see the dynamic of your locker room change for the worse. With many of their veteran leaders no longer around to keep people in line, this has the makings of a really amusing downward spiral.
And, seriously. Terdell Sands? If they’re counting on him for anything more than emergency depth, they’re in deep doodoo.

I believe that’s Prescott Burgess, not Preston Burgess… BTW, why would anyone name their baby “Terdell”???…

From what I’ve seen of Derrick Burgess, Belichick’s plan must be to employ these ex Raiders as the “cloaking device” defense, all invisible.

One of my favorite idiotic football names. I’m also currently getting a kick out of Tyrod Taylor.

Yeah, they’re all f-ed up after that 2 touchdown win over the Falcons.
    Barely holding it together.

Turdell could have been better than Chester McGlockton or Darrell Russell, but he lacked the work ethic. The Pats have raided Oakland’s discontinued aisle one too many times.

As a loyAl Raider for life, one does beg to ask the question?
Why would Belichick want our cast offs?
He’s been hanging with Al drinking the Kool aid……

    Hey Wizard,
Talk to us a week from today after the Ravens put a beat down on your Pats*. Based on the obvious animosity Bart Scott still feels about your team*, I strongly suspect Ray Lewis and his buds remember all too well how the refs stole that game from them in 2007 on national TV and plan to make Tommy Boy and Belicheat pay next weekend……

  18. TheWizard says: Sep 28, 2009 11:14 PM

You can’t lose with any dignity, can you?
Somebody always “stole” it from you, or “cheated”.
    Never you, is it?
Actually, it should be a hell of a game. I plan to enjoy it, win or lose, my life doesn’t change.
Pretty ironic you should infer Ray is involved in some sort of karma.
I wouldn’t want to be his stupid ass when he crosses to the other side.

Own up loser. The only one that stole that game from the Ravens was the Ravens poor discipline and a little help from Rex Ryan calling a timeout.

The Ravens are WAY BETTER than the mediocre Falcons, fool. Something you will find out on Sunday.

  22. footballnut says: Sep 29, 2009 11:04 AM

I’m hearing good things about Mayo’s progress as well around here. Hopefully he’ll be back in the next 2-3 weeks.
Terdell better not see the field Sunday as I am hoping Vince will be in, but…
The Ravens will get a better test than Cle, SD and KC this week at the Razor.
