Pink gloves, cleats coming this weekend

Though we’d ordinarily be dramatically opposed to the introduction of the color pink into an NFL uniform (especially when mixed with the color purple), in this case we definitely will make an exception.

According to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, four members of the Vikings’ roster will be wearing pink cleats next Monday night against the Packers.  It’s part of the league’s breast cancer awareness effort.

The players who’ll wear the shoes include quarterback Brett Favre, cornerback Antoine Winfield, linebacker Chad Greenway, and running back Chester Taylor.

Jensen writes that other players throughout the league are expected to wear pink cleats and/or pink gloves during Week Four, as part of the league’s efforts to fight the disease.

Favre’s wife, Deanna, is a breast cancer survivor, and Greenway is the team’s spokesman for breast cancer awareness.

So we fully support the move, but we realize that there will be some complaints.  But, let’s face it, pink cleats are a lot less offensive than green jerseys that match the color of the radioactive rod Homer Simpson carries out of the nuclear power plant at the start of every show.

Very nice effort by those players. Hopefully the raised awareness will translate into more funds for research. I am sure most families in America have been affected by it to some degree. Its nice to see that more than just a corporate logo / advertisement will make up any player’s uniform and it actually means something more. I am sure they will be mocked for their effort, but hopefully not too much.

Really? People are going to cmplain about breast cancer awareness? And we are supposed to acknowledge this? I don’t recall an outcry about pink Louisville Sluggers. Did you really type that sentence? I’m not one of theses sensitive types, but that statement just struck me as being stupid.

Man those seahawks jerseys were the worst of all time. How do those get appoved by whomever approves these things? Someone litelly had to look at those jerseys and say “yeah, those look pretty good”

  8. SpartaChris says: Sep 28, 2009 1:29 PM

While I ordinarily appreciate any time an opportunity presents itself to make fun of the Vikings, I like that they’re doing this. Some things in life are bigger than football and a rivalry, no matter how bitter that rivalry may be.

Kudos to the NFL for this move.

  13. Twiz says: Sep 28, 2009 1:36 PM

My own personal opinion that the NFL should make it mandatory that *ALL* players be required to wear cleats, gloves, or at the very least, one of those lil stickers on their helmets to show support. That would show greater support than just a few select players on each team.

Who would possibly complain about NFL players wearing pink gloves or pink cleats to raise awareness about breast cancer? I mean, seriously, who would complain about this? Terrorists?
    The Pro-Cancer lobby?
Men who are so terribly insecure about their own sexuality that they can’t stand the thought of watching other men wearing anything pink while playing football?
    Who?

  16. Lumas101 says: Sep 28, 2009 1:40 PM

Good move by the league. Anyone who has an issue with a little pink to support breast cancer awareness should re-think their priorities.

  18. ACDC84 says: Sep 28, 2009 1:43 PM

When watching that last play, it almost looked exactly the same as “The Catch” with Montana and Clark. Both plays rolled the same way out of the pocket, both QB’s had to avoid defenders, and both receivers caught the ball in the back of the endzone, amist defenders. Amazing!

  27. magsdad1 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:28 PM

This is great, but the league should have all players do something. Like all baseball players play with a pink bat, or something to that effect.
I think the Browns should wear all pink uniforms for the locker room cancer that Mangini is.

  28. texasPHINSfan says: Sep 28, 2009 2:32 PM

i’m not against it. i’m against lame displays of it.
but at least they’re trying. i’ll give them that. a better move would have been to participate in some existing fund-raising functions. i don’t think “awareness” is really a problem, honestly. who doesn’t know about it?

  29. mpritc1019 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:33 PM

I am about to win the worst person award! I am not saying that breast cancer is an unworthy cause but breast cancer gets so much exposure and money. There are other diseases out there. Diseases that are 100% fatal with no cure. Diseases that kill kids. One disease that is close to my heart is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy because my son has it. I just wish the NFL would look at some other charities. The awareness and money are sorely needed.

You fkn morons that are making fun of this seriously need to borrow a quarter and catch a ride on the clue bus!
As I said earlier, I would rather see *ALL* players doing this, not a select few. That being said, if even a few players do it, and it makes just one more person more aware, causes one woman to get a mammogram, it is well worth it, causes just one person to donate a few dollars to a cancer charity, it is well worth it.
Its hard to believe there are some people in this world that just don’t get it!

I am so sick of the Packer hypocrisy that permeates these posts.
That Chad Greenway is the teams spokesman on this matter and Favre’s own wife is a survivor probably has a lot to do with it. Greenway, most likely has lost someone to this.
What is the matter with more awareness? Be it “lame” displays or not? Seriously?
Hate the team all you want, but for God’s sake. don’t be a moron about it. I know for SOME of you Packer fans, that is a lot to ask.

As a male who’s not had cancer I can’t speak in terms of specifics, but I would think that many cancer victims would appreciate the fact that these famous athletes are showing support. Having the strength and will to fight is a huge part of cancer treatment, and this is just a small part of a larger effort to let those afflicted know that they are being thought about.
Secondly, typically when they have these pink pieces of equipment, they tend to be signed and auctioned off after the game with the proceeds going to research and treatment. And judging by these posts, I really can’t find a Packer fan on hereexcept no life Jimmy Smith. And by the way, the Packers did do something for breast cancer back when Deanna Favre was recovering. Her and the PACKERS started the Pink hat campaign, which I do recall several people making fan of the Packers wearing Pink hats. Of course no one was all over it or expected 24/7 postive media coverage like the attention-starved Viking fans. Please don’t call people “morons” you can’t prove a point. Point taken, good for the Vikings, but the Packers did it a couple of years ago too, without much fanfare I might add. You probably didn’t even know this did you Chicken Little? Oh and by the way, I’am not a Packer fan, just making sure you know some facts before you start spouting off. I havn’t seen a negative post from a Packer fan regarding this issue, if anyones negative it’s you for even bringing it up. And I can GUARANTEE had the Packers or any other team did this, you would lead the way in making fun of them.

As a previous poster noted, there was a huge campaign in support of Deanna Favre. Literally, tens of thousands of pink hats were sold in support of the cause. OK, it didn’t make a national story in terms of publicity but if it takes a Monday night game with a story line of Brent’s revenge to get national attention, so be it. Its a heck of a lot better story than the last national story on the Vikings (Love Boat) or the story before that (scalping superbowl tickets) or the story before that (Whizanator)

Oh, OK. You’re right. No one would buy a piece of NFL equipment worn in a game unless it was pink in color.
Get my point yet? You can raise money without the color pink. You can donate your own money (especially when you have millions) without wearing pink.
My mother had a lump removed years ago and I lost my father to cancer. I’m well aware it’s a worthy cause. But is wearing pink cleats going to open anyone’s eyes? How many people are going to say, “What’s breast cancer?” when they hear about it?

Good for the Vikings for taking the time to make this effort, although as bucc19 said, the Packers already did this years ago, and as everyone else said, wearing pink doesn’t work as well as actually donating money to the cause.
Still, anything done for the cause is a good thing, and I don’t agree with the hate the Vikings are getting on here for doing it. Come on people, there are pages upon pages of reasons to make fun of the sorry-ass Vikings. There’s no need to demean them for doing something good and wholesome for a change.
That said, it is very fitting that the Vikings chose to acccent their usual gay rights-purple with girly pink for THIS game, as opposed to any other. The Pack defense was going to make them their bitch for the entire game anyway, at least now they can look the part.

Well Chicken Little , touche’ however I live in Minnesota and when you talk of the “hypocrisy” of Packer fans, they have nothing on these fans over here. For 17 years I’ watched and listened to the vitriol aimed at Favre, his vicodin addiction, his personal life, more than anyone needed to know, and now it’s like Jesus just came to save the Vikings..so talk about hypocrisy, it goes both ways young lady , and as far as name calling, you started it by going off on the Packer fans when the whole rest of the league is teeing off on you guys. You remind of a lsebian whose had penis envy her whole life, and then when she finally goes thru the change , you wang it in everyones faces and cried for 17 years when they did it to you. You should be happy, espn and everyone is Finally, giving first rate coverage to a third rate team, all because of a PACKER icon. too funny for words

Does anyone not think that this could bring in some money? Possibly an auction for an autographed item? Come on people. Since when it awareness to much? I applaud these people for bringing this out. And to all you people who say that enough is enough, I forget about this cause. But now I am remembered and will find a way to do something positive for it.
    bucc19,
Seriously? You try to make a good point and blow it by acting like a little kid who lost his favorite balloon? Yes Vikings fans can be jerks every once in awhile (I am one of them). But Packer’s fans and every other fan in the league will do whatever it takes to support their team. But this is one cause where people should just stop the competition of words and focus on the issue. Every time a team tries to do something good someone has a problem with it because they are the Vikings, Packers, Bears, or Lions fans.

    ____________________
And I’d like to think I’ve read enough of YOUR posts to consider you intelligent enough to realize when someone is JOKING.
Let’s see, I spend two-thirds of my post berating everyone who would talk down on the Vikings for supporting a noble cause, just to proceed to talk some myself? I’m not THAT hypocritical. You’re confusing me with your own fan base.
We’re all aware of the collective IQ of posters on this site, but I should think you, of all people, would recognize sarcasm when you see it.

  72. purple hay-seuss says: Sep 28, 2009 7:07 PM

Did Florio post anything that says any other team is wearing anything pink next week? Or, maybe, just maybe, did he tap that mother lode of pathos that is the Packers/Vikings rivalry? Like he’s done about a thousand times since April? Like any time the Geezer farts? Like any time there is a breeze that moves the tape at the top of the goal posts?
Jee-hose-a-fatt, people. We all know that Florio has Jimmy and Bob and a few of the Bowling Alley crowd fully by the short ones here, but I’m astounded at the number of others that are jerked around by their own petard.
This is a LEAGUE effort, dweebs. Those slamming the Vikes can’t read, apparently. And those knee-jerking into those that can’t read are idiots, too.
We should be howling about the Vikings being 3-0. And that the Geezer threw another miracle, this time FOR us. That Percy blew by the kickoff Niners like little boys. That Sid Rice looked like Fred Freaking Astaire for the TD. That a literally unknown, just-signed WR shocked and rocked the HUMP. That AD beat his last-year’s rushing total against the Niners by like a million percent or something. That Gore was lost really early and his backup looked pretty dumb. That a blocked kick for a TD is what kept them in it, along with a few dumb purple penalties and their TE.
I didn’t expect a blowout by either team but I was disappointed that the Vikes had to resort to heroics to win. This is a good team, but not a dominant, deep-playoff team yet.
Anybody want to respond to some actual football talk? No, not you, Bob or you, Jimmy. Recess is over. Go back to the gym for PE. The girls need someone for pickleball.

People from the Vikings smacked on Favre when he was a Packer, should they have said yeah he is great, because he may play for Vikes some day? God your an idiot.
If you think theVikes are going to do good only because a FORMER packer is on the team, you are a bigger idiot than I thought.
There has been no player on the Packers that came from a different team, Right?

News Flash: We are not the only fans in the league that hate you guys. Particularly not on this site, where the all the most flaming, loudest and dumbest inbred homers the mighty Purple Pride has to offer (and by that I mostly mean you) all congregate. I feel sorry for all five of the decent Viking fans on here, constantly having to defend themselves against the attacks YOU provoke.
Oh, and do me a favor, keep chanting “this is your year”.. It’s just giving the rest of us more ammunition to throw at you when history repeats your team does what it always has.
Of course, once that happens, YOU’LL have long since “crawled in a hole”. Homer.

  79. Supersuckers says: Sep 29, 2009 9:30 AM

ChickenfootCome on. You can’t throw “rankings” out after three weeks. Give it 8 weeks before this season starts to form an identity. You yourself said Denver sucks (3-0) Cincy sucks (2-1) See what i mean. We don’t know who is good and who isnt outside the obvious until week 8. Rankings mean nothing right now.

  80. DCViking says: Sep 29, 2009 9:31 AM

JimmySmith — I wake up every morning and thank God I’m not you or Bob Nelson.
Maybe when you turn 12 or actually lose somebody to cancer, you’ll understand why sometimes you just shouldn’t say anything…

  81. Chickenfoot says: Sep 29, 2009 9:48 AM

Whatever Super. Why does the NFL keep track of them for the 1st 8 weeks then. You are right though, I don’t need the rankings to know Minnesota has a top 5 defense, I can see it with my own eyes.
Come on, Denver has to be about the worst 3-0 team ever. The Bengals are average at best.
Beating Pitt doesn’t seem to be too hard these days.
Why are you defending the Bengals so vehemently? To justify the loss to them?
I think 3 weeks is enough time to show a pattern of the way a team is playing. Sorry you don’t agree.
What does your “Aikman meter” read? Insufficient data?

  82. Supersuckers says: Sep 29, 2009 10:10 AM

The Aikman efficiency rankings dont come out until almost midseason. Sensibly.

  83. Supersuckers says: Sep 29, 2009 10:15 AM

I dont need to justify anything. I am just saying what i saw of Cincinnati when they played the packers was a damn good football team. While you “lowly bungled” them to death. Its ok. Im just saying. I watched Denver vs Oakland on Sunday. Denver is a fine team. Just respectfully disagreeing with your assestment of who is good and who isnt. My opinion means nothing obviously because im a tv/bleacher fan and in the scope of the league I know nothing. those two teams could fall on their face by week 8. So could everyone else.

  84. Chickenfoot says: Sep 29, 2009 10:49 AM

Well, they were playing the Packers…..
Oakland? Really? They haven’t been good since Gruden left! The Browns may make it back to back 0-16 teams. Beat an average Cincy team by a ball bouncing off of a helmet. They are a pretty weak 3-0 team. But hey, a wins a win, only 5 more and they may have 2nd place in the West locked up.
The Bengals are just not that good. The Ravens are the class of that division. Something is missing in Pitt right now. I think they stole on there.
Not saying I know more than you. I just think you are trying to give the Bengals more credit than is deserved because they beat your team, a team you had pegged for 11-12 wins.
I’m telling you, they continue thier horribl o-line play and consistent 20th ranked defense, they will not sniff that many wins.
They aren’t running the ball for crap and they aren’t stopping the run for crap. That isn’t how you win games.
You and I will never agree. I find it amusing that you follow something that Aikman is a part of.
So, in the grand scheme of things in the NFL, the 1st 7 games stats, don’t mean all that much? * is the magic number?
    That is preposterous.

  85. Supersuckers says: Sep 29, 2009 11:12 AM

He played the game. Why wouldn’t one listen to what he has to say? He gave a interview last year explaining why the leagues ranking system is flawed. Some ivy league math professors teamed up with him to create the system. I listened to the radio interview and everything he said made sense. Here is a link explaining how it works. It makes total sense. The NFL is talking about implementing this system instead of the yardage based system it currently uses. Which is highly flawed. great interview. Great article.

When you get to the point that even your fellow Viking fans are embarrassed by your idiocy, maybe, just maybe, it’s time to reel it in a bit?!!
And no, I’m not nervous. If we lose (and I’ll concede it’s likely) we lose. I’ll be here to take my lumps, and I’ll still be a fan until I die. If we win, I get a 6-month break from the likes of you, at least until the season is over and it’s “your year” once again. That would be really nice actually.
At any rate, I don’t have a lot to lose either way; I’m not the one on here predicting grandiose things after three weeks of play against less-than-stellar competition.
    Maybe YOU should be nervous.

  95. Supersuckers says: Sep 30, 2009 8:47 AM

Ah I see. Green Bay and its 3rd ranked D!

  96. Chickenfoot says: Sep 30, 2009 9:35 AM

Super, probably not so much anymore…..those are after week ONE. You remember, when Cutler gift wrapped the game?
I didn’t find any for after week 3, was pressed for time.
I just like proving you wrong! :)
Beer: IF the Pack loses, you won’t or shouldn’t be taking any lumps. You haven’t been doing anything moronic to deserve it.

  97. Supersuckers says: Sep 30, 2009 10:12 AM

turnover differential is the simgle most important stat if you ask any NFL head coach or GM. Aikman’s Ivy :eague team also recognizes that. Green Bay’s defense forces turnovers. Period. Cutler wasn’t trying to throw the ball to a Green Bay Packer. He obviously was confused, pressured, etc etc. If there was no defense out there he probably completes every pass. Thats the point. Green Bay has protected the football and has forced turnovers. If that is a trend that continues all year they will win alot of games. Math dictates that.

  98. Chickenfoot says: Sep 30, 2009 10:44 AM

You MAY BE IN alot of games, turnovers are all well and good, but if you can’t run the ball, stop the run, and, keep your qb upright, those games you are in, by and large, you will lose.
Bottom line, is you can’t count on or predict turnovers.
I know, I know, Capers’s 3-4 is “predicated” on getting turnovers. You still can’t will them to happen.
As for Cutler, you yourself has said that Favre just “heaves the ball up there”. Sure looks to me that is what Cutler did. No Bears in the vicinity.
Paint it how you want, they got 4 int’s that game and barely won. That is not the sign of a good team.
As for yardage allowed, up until the last game, there was no “garbage time” in the other 2 games, they were hotly contested. they didn’t put the Rams away until late 2nd half, so for the Packer’s d, it is an accurate description to say that 2oth in yards allowed= not so good defense.
It doesn’t matter how many turnovers the D gets, if the o doesn’t turn them into points.
Out of curiousity, what is the line for the game?

  99. Supersuckers says: Sep 30, 2009 11:09 AM

the only ranking that matter are the standings. Minnesota by 3

  100. Chickenfoot says: Sep 30, 2009 11:47 AM

Not that the spread means anything, just curious.

  101. Bigskyvikes says: Sep 30, 2009 6:58 PM

I’m not nervous, I’ve been a Viking fan for 40years, I’ve been let down everytime.
This is the first year I actually have confidence with what I’m seeing from the Vikes, mainly from Favre! Being surrounded by talent, defense also.
I’ve seen a team trailing and stays focused and regains the lead and wins. No panicing.
I cant remember the last time thats happened from the Vikes, its usually once their losing, fold up the tent.
So one way you can avoid my “idiocy, is not to read the blogs on a Viking article?
Do you see any of my overconfident, arrogant, pain in the ass braging on your beloved Packer articles, NO!!
You should be interested in the Vikes to even see my blogs, so you made your bed, you get to lye in
