Roethlisberger will guest host a wrestling show

It’s fitting, we suppose, that in this Rex Ryan-fueled era of pro wrestling sound bites, a current NFL player would be involved in one of the staples of the “sport.”

Next week, while the football-watching world is watching Vikings quarterback Brett Favre face the Packers for the first time in his career, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be  guest hosting WWE’s Monday Night Raw

Seriously.

The event will be held in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The prior night, the Steelers host the Chargers on Sunday Night Football.

Actually, it’s fitting that Roethlisberger would get the nod, given that embellishing injuries is one of the standard job requirements for the “wrestlers.”

If you keep the kind of performance schedule WWE guys do, there’s really no need to embellish injuries. You’ll end up with plenty of real ones.

How is this any different than Tony Romo going to Cabo? Steelers are struggling in third place, he’s got to spend some time memorizing his lines for the interviews…. at least Romo did his stupid ideas on the bye week.

Don’t do it, Ben. Don’t give the parasites at the WWE any extra credibility or publicity.
And Mike, please don’t call it pro wrestling, it’s “sports-entertainment”- a hybrid of crappy acting and poor in-ring “action”.

As a Steeler fan, got to say it – Roethlisberger, you are beginning to be a bit too much of a Bradshaw for my tastes. What’s next? A series of appearances in Burt Reynolds’ bad car chase movies? Hooper II anyone? Smokey and the Bandit V??
Take a lesson from Eminem – he used to settle all his lawsuits before launching the next phase of his self-promotional tour of America. The only things I want to see next to your name in a headline are “Steelers win”, and “McNutty lawsuit dismissed”, not necessarily in that order.
This sounds about as dumb as riding without a helmet – maybe even dumber – and certainly not what I would expect from the QB with a losing record and a huge sex abuse lawsuit. But maybe that’s the problem – maybe this is EXACTLY what I should expect.

Florio , couldn’t resist getting the shot in about the injuries, theya re not wrestlers they are paid entertainers, fake wrestlers at best. How about this “crappy journalism is one of the standard job requirements” evidentally that is the standards for NBC

I cannot believe the NFL would allow a player to moonlight with the show that is MNF’s biggest competitor for ratings, WWE Monday Night Raw. This is bound to ruffle the feathers of the commissioners office. What do you think Florio?

  14. evilmajortom says: Sep 29, 2009 12:55 AM

  15. jedmud says: Sep 29, 2009 1:17 AM

Florio, seriously stop making references to Rex Ryan and pro wrestling. The fact that he says, the Jets are going to be a smash mouth football team isn’t talking shit or over hyping a situation. I’m pretty sure you said the Jets would realistically be 1-4 or 0-5 starting this season. Well at 3-0 you’re not retracting your statement, but continuing to shit on a coach whose only fault is saying that the Jets are going to be winners.
For a lawyer you do a shitty job of researching. You string together hypotheses based on little to no evidence and generally neglect all aspects of intelligent rationalization. It is almost as if you never spent any time in law school or in the legal profession. Your articles are all non-sense, poorly researched and missing huge gaps of information.
In other words, you are a disgrace to your previous profession.

I have never been a fan of “pro” “wrestling” but I am impressed at the guest hosts Vince McMan has lined up, Bob Barker, Al Sharpton, Big Been, whose next? I think Michelle Obama would be great. Say what you want about that show but WWE makes a lot of money and these guest stars certainly don’t hurt.
I don’t think this will hurt the Steelers. I doubt that Ben will be missing practices at monday night for filming. Furthermore do you think Ben is the problem with the Steelers?

  18. BlueDevil71 says: Sep 29, 2009 1:55 AM

“Embellish” injuries. So that’s what it is. Hmmm, guess all those injuries that I suffered or any of my fellow colleagues did were “embellished.” Never knew that.
Wrestling is sports entertainment, but trust me when I say a lot of injuries are legit.
    Florio, seriously, get a clue.

  19. pm_wiu says: Sep 29, 2009 2:09 AM

Well, blame NBC president Bonnie Hammer for wanting Vince McMahon to continue this stupid guest host concept because she enjoys the money she’s making off the program. Or did you forget that USA is also ran by NBC Universal. It’s all about the almighty dollar.

  20. JagMania65 says: Sep 29, 2009 5:17 AM

Maybe Florio should go do an in-depth piece on sports entertainment to expose that “embellishing injuries” thing. I got two words for you: John Stossel. Stossel lost part of his hearing doing a story on “fake wrestling” when a wrestler put a move on him.
And you know that Raw is broadcast on a cable channel owned by Universal, who also owns NBC and this website… Florio might find himself in a “Hell in a Cell” match this weekend against The Undertaker if he keep badmouthing the broadcast family!

No surprise there. I definitely picture Ben to fit in the crowd of hillbillies and wife beaters to watch wrestling (a man’s version of a soap opera). That’s fitting for the town he plays football for too. A bunch of hillbillies and wife beaters. Go Ben! Keep making yourself look more and more stupid while you continue to find ways to lose football games! Oh and I HIGHLY doubt Monday Night Raw or any of those wrestling shows are evening sniffing at the ratings that MNF gets. I bet they don’t even compare. But I still don’t see why the commish would allow this to happen.

  29. Ken1313 says: Sep 29, 2009 8:33 AM

Just a quick note…..I am not a fan of Rothlesberger……but his main reason for going on WWE Monday Night Raw is to draw attention to his charity. Whether people want to admit it or understand it….or not….Monday Night Raw is the most watched cable program on TV. So while on the outside, it looks like Big Ben is doing something stupid, he is actually doing something good. I am sure he has already been warned by the Steelers not to get into any kind of skit or scene where he has to get physical also. Every guest host has been hyping something…this situation is no different. So no need to pile on the guy. And again…I’m a Patriots fan…so I am NOT a Big Ben fan

  39. mrogers18 says: Sep 29, 2009 10:05 AM

Give the guy a break. His play is not responsible for the early mistep. Two winning TD passes dropped or the Steelers would be 3-0. And the INT last week was b/c Santonio didn’t “Dare to be great” on that play.
If you’ve ever watched WWE Raw than you would know that memorizing the lines would take as much time as Romo fumbling a snap in the playoffs. But judging from some of the language and grammar posted some of you all would never be able to memorize the lines.
And Florio we all know that the Steelers are your team and that is the reason you unneccesarily bash a franchise and a QB that are on top of the NFL. Faking his injuries? Seriously!!!! He actually just admits he has them which is a no-no in the NFL.
By no means is this team finished – take care of your business at home – sweep Cleveland and the Ravens again (OK maybe split with the Ravens – I’m not an idiot) and revenge on the Bengals and they’re defending the title again…. last time I checked it’s how you finish. Although I don’t like to defend trash such as Vox, I do believe the knee injury/ pec implants remark was referring to a wrestler, and not your over rated QB. And while it’s nice that he’s pimping his charity, that stuff should be done in the off season, especially when your team is 1-2, you have thrown more INT’s than TD’s, and you are smack in the middle of a civil suit. But then again, common sense has never been Ben’s strong suit.

First of all, Ben is doing this to promote his charity, a fact lost here. I kind of expected fans of “real sports” and the the self righteous sports media to look down their noses at pro wrestling. Like the poster Bren said, if these prima donna “real athletes” worked the schedule that WWE wrestlers do, (or anyone for that matter) they would come down with real injuries. Is wrestling scripted? Yes. However, the injuries that these men and women who do it are very real. If you named me a WWE Superstar/Diva that is on the roster, I could probably rattle off the injuries they got. Example: Triple H tore both quads. Randy Orton had several shoulder surgeries, broken foot, and broken collarbone. Edge is currently rehabbing a torn Achilles, and has had neck surgery and tore the left and right pec. People who call wrestling “fake” are very ill informed. It is a show, but there is alot of risk involved. WWE Superstars do NOT have an off season like the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL players (who make way more than these wrestlers, even the top ones) have to heal either.

I don’t know why journalists think it’s cool to bad mouth wrestling though they will not hesitate to drop references to frilly shows like Desperate Houswives or . As for Ben hosting RAW I’ve only seen the Steelers gameplan horribly not seen him play bad so what exactly do you people expect him to do stay indoors until his line gives him some protection or his coach stops asking him to throw 60 times a game or Willie Parker to show up? And you guys haven’t done much complaining about his overall foolishness until A. They were losing and B. he was featured on something you find beneath you the rape allegation was apparently on his way to anyone with half a brain that saw his party pictures from his first SuperBowl win but you guys didn’t complain then so please shut it down now too.

What a total coward. Clearly you’re far too embarrassed to name your team – you’d rather spend your day trashing a team whose success your team will never match. Fine. You’re not the first loser to take this approach (see Vox), and you surely wont be the last.
If you have self-esteem issues (and clearly you do), that’s fine. That’s your business.
What I don’t understand is why you insist on putting that fact on display to everyone in the free world with internet access, every day.
I guess like Vox, you two are just a couple of lonely, friendless nerds still living at home, and the only thing that prevents you from “going Columbine” on somebody, is the attention you so desperately crave here.

    lol!
Gee, your explanation is so much more plausible then the truth… which is very simple. (Thank goodness that it is “simple”… maybe you’ll can grasp its meaning once I tell you)
I hate the Steelers. Pure and simple. You want to make it out to be more than that, then fine.
The fact of the matter is that you hate the idea of a guy like me pointing out all that is bad about your precious little team. Tough. Get used to it.
The “Squealers” (as I like to call them) aren’t “perfect” and it’s high time you homers got it through your thick skulls. The fact the team has the mascot “Steely McBeam” is proof positive of this. Speaking of good old “Steely”, why don’t you bright boys tell all of us just how “cool” it is to have old Steely around instead of a squad of half naked hot babes shaking their pom-poms?
    lol!
I notice you homers keep ignoring all my questions concerning the “coolness” of Steely McBeam.
It ain’t going away, ya know. Please tell me how “cool” it is to have a mascot named “Steely McBeam” instead of some icky cheerleaders…
    lol!
The team’s brass must think their fan base is made up mostly of 8 year old little boys who find girls “icky because they have cooties”…
    lol!!
Watch this YouTube video linked below. It’s from “Pardon the Interruption” from August 9, 2007. It talks about how the Rooney family nixed the idea of a cheerleader squad in favor of a mascot. Michael Wilbon’s comments on the subject are both classic and golden and are fuel for every hater of the Steelers. Enjoy… I know I did when I watched it!
