Zorn on 'Skins: "We're getting better"

A day after suffering perhaps the most embarrassing loss since the Saints ended the Buccaneers’ 26-game losing streak some 32 years ago, Redskins coach Jim Zorn was optimistic.

“In the big picture things are progressing,” Zorn said, per John Taylor of the Washington Times.  “We’re getting better.”

The ‘Skins will definitely look better on Sunday, when the Bucs come to town with Josh Johnson as the new starting quarterback.

Still, it’s hard for us to digest the notion that the Redskins are getting better after losing to one of the worst teams that has ever played in the NFL.

We needed to have Cong. Joe Wilson at the presser.

Zorn has spent too much time on the golf course. Someone needs to tell him you need a higher score to win in football.

  4. spartyfi says: Sep 28, 2009 2:36 PM

Florio…it’s 2009 buddy. The 2008 Lions were the worst team in NFL history, NOT the 2009 Lions. If you’d actually take the time to look at the roster (you know, research) you would see that it’s a completely different team. 9 new starters on Defense alone (actually 10 yesterday!).

Shouldn’t it be Buccaneers’ 26-game WINLESS streak?

  7. Hap says: Sep 28, 2009 2:39 PM

Yes, they really did look like they were getting better …to Helen Keller. I cannot believe he said that. He looked so lost on the sideline yesterday.

  8. Patsfan1776 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:40 PM

The guy needs to chill out, he looked rabid on Sunday. Mangenius would look the same way but showing emotion would cause weight loss.

  9. GregO says: Sep 28, 2009 2:41 PM

    26 game winning streak?
That must be some kind of record.

  10. MNRunLeft says: Sep 28, 2009 2:41 PM

Just fire him already. A 2 point win over the Rams and a lose to the Lions in consecutive weeks and he says they are getting better? I guess it’s hard not get better offensively considering their 9 point offensive explosion against the Rams week 2, but atleast they got the win.

  11. TheVillain112 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:41 PM

What else could he say? At least we’re not as bad as the Bucs?

  12. mobskinz says: Sep 28, 2009 2:41 PM

I want some of what Zorn is smokin’. How in the wide world of sports can you LOSE to the worst team in the league the last 3 years and say you are getting better? Compared to what? Why is it that the Skins continue to be “getting better” over the last 18 years while other crappy teams have actually gotten better and won Super Bowls? It would seem to me that in the age of the AZ Cardinals, ATL Falcons, Cin BENGALS(!) that it is “our” turn. Do I sound frustrated? Negative? Too bad. I am sick of this. I have been a Skins fan since 1968 – and I can cry if I want to… And I cry because I bleed Burgandy & Gold…

  13. drwebber says: Sep 28, 2009 2:43 PM

Well its not like they lost to Detroit… Oh wait… Nevermind.

  14. mofo says: Sep 28, 2009 2:43 PM

“one of the worst teams that has ever played in the NFL”
Uhh, Detroit’s roster turnover from last season to this season is damn near 50%.
Had the ‘Skins played the 2008 Detroit Lions, that statement would be accurate. But since they didn’t, that statement is inaccurate. The streak is one thing but the actual team is another.
You know, Florio, now that you’re little rinky-dink setup is getting teasers from Bob Costas during NBC’s Football Night in America, you may want to think about making your writing a little less rinky-dink.

  19. Krow says: Sep 28, 2009 2:48 PM

  20. teke184 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:48 PM

This is like the Black Knight in Monty Python And The Holy Grail calling a missing arm “a flesh wound.”
You just lost to a team on an 0-19 streak, Jim. The only way things are “getting better” is that the next team you lose to will be on a shorter losing streak.

  25. SimAlex2000 says: Sep 28, 2009 2:54 PM

    Breaking News!!
The Redskins BLOW. No, seriously, why write about Jim Zorn and the Deadskins? Useless franchise. The only player worth a turd on that team is London Fletcher. Florio, you should spend your time writing about teams that are….
    ….you know… relevant?
Redskins can be summed up in 2 fail words:
    Daniel Snyder.
    The End.

  29. jan van flac says: Sep 28, 2009 2:55 PM

I hate the Skins but Detroit is not even the worst team in the NFL right now…forget about last year, most of the players on this year’s roster had no part in that.
I would however disagree with the notion that the Redskins are “getting better”.

  30. WetHog says: Sep 28, 2009 2:55 PM

  32. Rafterman says: Sep 28, 2009 3:00 PM

This team never had any heart, it’s just more obvious to outsiders now.
They are a bunch of check cashing, bling flashing, under achievers who only care about their next Eastern Motors rap commercial. That and pimping around town in their rides. Football is just the way they support their life style, nothing more.
After last seasons implosion, 90% of them should have been doing it elsewhere!

  33. mustbechris says: Sep 28, 2009 3:01 PM

  34. detroitslim says: Sep 28, 2009 3:06 PM

    Step to, Florio.
The Lions “were” or “used to be” the worst team in the NFL. The Raiders? The Rams? Cleveland?
The 2008 Lions will be a perpetual punchline. (Even though they had a brutal schedule, and the rest of the league losers all got to play each other a couple of times… Just saying that statistically the Raiders, Rams, and Chiefs would have gone 0-16 last year if they played the Lions schedule.)
The 2009 Lions will hide away safely in the mediocrity of the bottom half of the NFL, which is a massive improvement.

  35. WashingtonRedstorms says: Sep 28, 2009 3:09 PM

Which franchise is worse? Redstorms or Raiders?

  36. NinerNation says: Sep 28, 2009 3:09 PM

I have to agree with a couple posters on here, the Lions are not the worst team in the league. For one, they have a QB, and Matthew Stafford is light years ahead of Jamarcus Russell.
Now, I defended Russell a few weeks ago, but I cannot even begin to IMAGINE a way to defend him. It’s becoming more, and more apparent that he’s only in this for the money. At this point, the race for last is between the Raiders, the Rams, and the Bucs…Lions will win 6 this year.

  37. lionsinnyc says: Sep 28, 2009 3:10 PM

Mofo–couldn’t agree more. Larry Foote wasn’t on last years team, neither was Stafford, or Bryant Johnson, or more than half the roster. Then add Gun at DC over Moronelli’s son-in-law, Linehean over that Hack Colletto, and of course Schwartz over the worst coach in NFL history Rodney Moronelli, and the Lions are a completely differet animal–pun intended. To call this years version the worst team is not only lazy, but inaccurate. has anyone seen the Browns?

  38. lebowski says: Sep 28, 2009 3:12 PM

The Lions are improved. Just sayin’.

  39. phootballphreak says: Sep 28, 2009 3:33 PM

other than that mrs. lincoln how did you like the play?

  40. Bill In DC says: Sep 28, 2009 3:38 PM

Did Zorn get hit in the head and think he was the Lions Coach?
Next thing he’s going to trot out is how hard his guys are working, how they were fighting to the end, and all the other Coachspeak code phrases that translate roughly to, ‘We’re losers.’

  41. dcfan-1212450 says: Sep 28, 2009 3:45 PM

Wow Florio. Another brilliant post. First off, the Lions are not one of the worst teams in the league, look at their stats. Second, your insulting the team you picked to go to the Super Bowl.
Seriously, where can i apply for Florios job, i clearly dont need any experience, knowledge, or even stats to work here. Hell, i dont even need to know how to proofread or even spell. Not like microsoft inventing spellcheck or anything…

  42. Katmanduu says: Sep 28, 2009 4:11 PM

This is why the Deadskins suck every year. They are run by douchebags from the top on down. Don’t worry Zorny, I’m sure there are high schools in Washington State that will be looking for coaches next year. And you will be available.
But then again, who in their right mind would take the job in such a crappy organization?

  43. DanSnyder says: Sep 28, 2009 4:12 PM

proofread is a funny looking word. Doesn’t look correct =(

  44. shawnc16 says: Sep 28, 2009 4:12 PM

Come on you guys are nitpicking, regardless of roster turn over, the team was still on a 19 game losing streak and its still embarassing to be the team that finally lost to them.
That said How in the hell does Zorn say they are improving, in what way? Maybe he thinks if he says it enough everyone will just except it.

  45. Hovenaut says: Sep 28, 2009 4:20 PM

Gee coach, what’s next? Perhaps you could improve up an order versus the mighty Tampa franchise.
Zorn – zero emotion, zero sense of reality. Classic case of loser denial going on in D.C. (yet again).
If they are green lighting a new Three Stooges movie, let’s begin shooting at the end of the regular season (the Redskins have no plans). Like Zorn, Cerrato, and Snyder in the starring roles.
Done w/ pro football already, let’s drop the puck. Go Caps.

  47. Zaggs says: Sep 28, 2009 4:38 PM

They are getting better, if Detroit wins the superbowl. Otherwise you’ve hit rock-shattered-glass-bottom when you lose to a team tied for the second longest losing streak.

  48. HAILSKINS says: Sep 28, 2009 5:10 PM

GETTING BETTER?!!! ON WHAT PLANET?! The Skins suck. They always say we have talent we have the players. Clearly you do not! You are getting worse by the week. The team has quit and they all need to be replaced. Snyder blow this team up get a real GM and coach and start over. It has not worked in 10 years you have owned the team. You are truly a loser if you think the Skins have what it takes to be a Super Bowl contender anytime soon.

    @hailskins
we need a hardnose coach bro. we had one in schottenheimer but lil napolean (snyder) wants control of everything. i will say that he is willing to spend and get the players unlike the bidwills but then he wont stay out of it. he thinks he is actually a good GM. the best decision he ever made was hiring schottenheimer and then he fired him after one year. i believe schott won like 7 or 8 in a row to finish the season and still got fired. he had the skins on track to make the playoffs the next year and what did snyder do, got involved. snyder will never learn and we will continue to be a mockery until he hires a football guy and keeps his beak out of it. the snyders and jerry jones of the world will never learn that success and making money in the business world does not automatically qualify you to play GM in the NFL.

  51. Beast Of The East says: Sep 28, 2009 8:58 PM

    @bigbluefan
Your a giants fan right? You know all about having a team that sucks but your probably one of those fans that started cheering after they beat the pats in the SB right? Typical. Your about as smart as Plaxico Burress. Our team may have sucked for a while but if you have been a football fan, you know the skins are one of the richest football traditions in all of the NFL. Don’t come back and comment until you learn how to spell losing streak.

  52. rfk says: Sep 28, 2009 11:05 PM

    @beast of the east.
First, what beast? Please Redskins have sucked for almost 2 decades.
Second, I, as a fan well versed in NFL history, can tell you that you are right: the redskins do have a rich tradition of winning. Did have, actually.
However, whatever bigbluefan said must have been right to get you so hissy. The Giants have a richer tradition of winning. Older franchise. More championships. More victories. Original owners (ur on ur third and worst owner in the league, as per Al Davis). One location. The only period of misery that the Giants had was in the late 60s/70s, when they were abysmal.
BUT WHAT DID THEY DO? Hire a GM, who subsequently signed two time SB champ Phil Simms, and hired the man who hired Bill Parcells. Last time I checked–and I check everyday–that did not work out to bad. Owe, and this is the same Giants that have owned the Redskins for the past 3 decades.
    Blah!
