So with 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree having missed three regular-season games and counting while he continues to holdout for a bigger contract, is he missing the money?
Nope.
Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports that Crabtree is getting by on his non-football dollars.
"He has made over 750 grand in marketing dollars," said Mike Ornstein, who along with Peter Miller handles Crabtree's endorsement deals.
"It is not that he doesn't want to play, but he is not under
the gun to," Ornstein added.
And that's precisely why Bengals tackle Andre Smith caved after a lengthy holdout, and why Crabtree has been able to hold firm. Smith, who lacks the commercial appeal of a guy like Crabtree, needed the cash. (Then again, Smith could have tried after his shirtless 40-yard dash to land a deal with Jello. Or Michelin.)
But the marketing money will last only so long, if Crabtree doesn't play.
"We are not able to do much
marketing for him right now because he is not playing," Ornstein said.
And, surely, Ornstein and Miller are feeling more than a little frustrated by that fact. They get paid based on the marketing money that flows in. So if Crabtree isn't making much marketing money, Ornstein and Miller aren't making much money from representing his marketing interests, either.
Crabtree's marketing deals keep him from needing cash

I think he will sign before that deadline. You think 750K is gonna get him by with his Diva ways?? Not a chance!!!
C'mon.... $750k isn't going to last him long. First off, lop 40% off the top of that $750k for taxes, he never even sees that part of it.
Did you see all the family/friends/hangers-on that at the draft, up on stage with him? Do you think all their airfare, hotel, and pocket cash comes out of thin air?
Even if you forget such extravagant spending, he's still having to pay trainers, gym fees, normal living expenses, travel (flying back and forth between his home in Dallas and SF, again that isn't free), lodging while traveling, etc.
Then figure in nights out, paying for friends to go out with him, family hitting up for 'loans'...
His agents get their cut of that $750k. Maybe, what, 3% - 10%, still that isn't chump change.
He's can't hold out a year on just $750k gross, not yet, not unless he's truly and actually living a middle-class life and lifestyle.
Florio - yes, you are right, the 750K will only last so long. I couldn't get by for more than a few months on that measly stack of Benjamins. We should begin a collection for him.
But seriously, its not the advertising money - can't you imagine his agent is being told by several teams to sit tight and wait for a sign and trade? With the lack of receiving talent at big-time programs like Dallas, Redskins, Ravens, Eagles, et al, there is a big hunger out there for guys with his skills. I'm sure Deion was not far from the truth - bunch of teams would probably pay him what he wants, and SF should have known that before they drafted him.
You've got to think that the companies that were sold Crabtree for endorsement feel like they were robbed. He's made 750 Gs f0r endorsing products and all he can claim is being revealed as a greedy retard that has no firm grip on reality?
How is Tuesday morning the time to repeat yourself for the sixth time about his marketing dollars? Isn't there injury news or something you could steal from other places?
He just needs to find the right product. Maybe a body lice medication or product: "Keeps the Crabs from playing for a long time."
750k... what is that 3 maybe 4 nights of making it rain in the club?
Here is an interesting theory on how the nineres could handle this situation:
Why don't they let Crabtree sit this year, then next year, trade up and draft him again and offer him the league minimum. He would look like an idiot if he holds out again and probably ruin his chances of ever turning pro. This would also send the message to any other NFL hopefuls with the same prima dona attitude that they should have to prove their worth before they get too greedy. It is sickening to me that these guys get away with this.
I can tell you from a Niner fan perspective most of us have Crabtree in the rear-view mirror. For my part, I'll pay attention on November 17th when the rookie signing deadline rolls around. Other than that I'm rooting for the product on the field, which by the way is one Favre miracle away from 3-0.
What companies were so stupid as to give this guy an endorsement ?
I wouldn't buy anything he endorsed.
How difficult is it going to be for Ornstien to get players deals next year before the player signs a contract?
Dear Subway,
I played as many downs in the NFL as Crabtree has so can you please send my a check .
Thanks,
Everyone that isn't an NFL player
And I guarantee if he doesn't sign with the 49ers this year that he will never get close to the same NFL deal they're offering him. With other WRs coming out of college who didn't spend a year out of football and who can showcase their talents at the combine, Crabtree will be hard pressed to even prove he's worth a first round pick. So I hope he saves that marketing money he's gotten so far because that's going to be his only payday for a long while.
He should be able to get a gig with those shysters at Cash4Gold - heck, he'll be a customer soon enough...
this sounds like gross earnings..which means after taxes, agent fees, etc..he is probably left with 300k, if that.

The theory has one flaw: If he reenters the draft the 49ers are not allowed to draft him again.
After uncle Sam's take, and his agents share Crabtree might have enough left over for a tank of gas in the Bay Area.
Al's a genius. His team may suck...but he's a genius
How many marketing deals does he have?
I know he was on the cover of NCAA 10 - is that it?
What company would possibly pay this clown to promote their product?
My first comment only made sense when this story was posted twice in a row. Ah, well.
i'm mildly schadenfraudistic here.
while i was hoping for Crabtree to be broke & not make any money, our greedy marketing companies have come to his rescue (apparently). Obviously you cannot make a rule that marketing companies can't pay a player not under contract - that would be against the freedoms this country was built on.
i DO hope that whatever companies paid him that money fire some rich CEO's or other personnel who make entirely too much money after they take the huge hit of not being able to market Crabtree. morons.
Crabtree should receive the Chad Johnson dumb ass award for 2009 for giving away an NFL career.
If the forty-niners had drafted Michael Oher maybe they could have gotten a first down on Sunday.
Subway named a sandwich after him.
It's just a ham & turkey sandwich, but they want you to pay $50.00 for it because they think it's as good as a 7 course meal.
as a niner fan, i don' t want him now. he will produce very little this season while costing a lot and probibly get hurt. if he is any good, he will hold out again for even more money and be a cancer. i hope he never comes, niners trade him for an exrta 1 and 2in the draft. if all the premier teams need a wr, pay the premier price. By the way... RAMS are dead mutten this weekend.
Who is going to buy something endorsed by this unproven loser. The NFL has got come up with a rookie system like the NBA where you have to earn the big contracts.
These guys heads are so inflated, knowing that they are going to get paid without having to prove themselves.
CrabMeat cold cut combo, get it NOW at Subway?
Ya know, maybe were all wrong, maybe Al is a genius, 3 games 18 yards...crazy good!
...at the end of the day this guy doesn't have the guts to play for a Mike Singletary. He won't take his punk s***...
why anybody would hire such hollow character with that kind of jack on the table in theses economic times to pimp their brand speaks volumes....if you buy because of craptree you're a sad sad clown... :(

WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I understand you gotta get paid Crabtree, but you're throwing away your "first"(maybe last) year in the NFL for a few million dollars.
Get your ass signed, show what you can do, and prove to the 9ers that you are worth more than what the Raiders paid DHB. Thats how this shit works.
Until then, you are some college scub who hasn't done a damn thing in the NFL(you probably don't have what it takes anyways) and you want to be paid like Randy Moss.
