Pennington lands on injured reserve, future in question

The acquisition of Tyler Thigpen unofficially confirmed what many have reported for the last day: Dolphins starting quarterback Chad Pennington will miss the rest of the season.

Miami made it official Tuesday, placing him on injured reserve.

The big question now is whether Pennington will continue to play football after another shoulder injury.

The Miami Herald writes that Pennington will seek a second opinion on his shoulder Friday from Dr. James Andrews. Since this season has already been decided, that meeting is expected to provide clarity regarding Pennington’s future.

Herald reporter Jeff Darlington tweeted on the issue Monday, writing, “I’m curious to see what Pennington decides to do. He might have too much passion to hang it up, but he also loves life away from football. . . . I spent quite a bit of time with him this offseason, and he was excited about idea of moving to West Virginia to coach high school football.”

This will be Pennington’s third surgery on his right shoulder.
