Pennington opts for shoulder surgery

With a torn capsule in his shoulder and a season of high hopes shredded, Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has elected to undergo surgery, according to Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald.

Dr. James Andrews will get reacquainted with the inside of Pennington’s right shoulder on Friday.  Andrews has twice before operated on Pennington’s shoulder, in 2004 and 2005.

Even if Pennington chooses to play football again, it likely won’t happen in Miami.  He’s signed through 2009, and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Pennington will receive the balance of his $3.9 million salary.

He might be able to squeak a few more years out as a back up but his career is pretty much over after this I suspect.

Poor guy. Last year was a good year for him. I like to see him succeed but now his career is probably coming to a rocky finish

Oh come on you know Tampa will pick him up.

Chad, needs to be thinking about whether or not he’s going to be able to pick his kid up, or whatever. As young as he still is, he seriously needs to weigh quality of life issues vs. playing football. He has enough money to live like a god. Football is not that important.

i doubt he ever starts in the NFL again unless he’s a backup somewhere or maybe if a team loses their starter before the season.
his arm strenght is weak & cant be much better after 3 surgery’s. i just wonder if he should see a different Dr bcuz that one failed twice already.

He is a very smart QB. If it wasn’t for his shoulder problems he would have gone a lot further. I didn’t like him because he played against the Pat’s, but he was good.

mark my words- we havent seen the end of pennington
he will follow the warner/collins route
he is a winner when healthy
he is the most acurate qb of all time
many teams would love to have an acurate qb that can manage the game
you lose arm strength as you get older, but not accuracy and smarts.
i see him as a starter in 2-3 years

Pennington was a blessing for Miami last year, watching him knock off the Jets at the end of last season was something special for us long beaten finfans. Unfortunately, it was clear that his arm really had nothing left but 10yrd outs and when you cannot stretch a field with authority you’ll only go so far. This injury can only weaken an already marginal arm. I only hope the Trio realize how special this mans leadership and head for the game is and make him an offer he can’t refuse to stay with the team as a coach should he decide to retire. Good Luck Penny, in a league of Diva’s, thugs and loudmouths, you showed that class can still be part of the NFL.

Pennington is a high character guy and a smart QB. I am sure there will be NFL teams that will be interested in having Pennington around as a veteran backup if he wants to try to remain in the NFL after this next rehab. Even though he was never a Patriot and, worse yet, he was a Jet and Dolphin, I’ve always liked and respected the guy.

If he can’t come back as a qb….he’d make a good qb coach somewhere. Wish him well.

I wish Chad well. He’s played on two teams that I truly dispise but I have always Respected him. He is a true professional, and I would love to see him suit up for my favorite team.

he’ll be starting somewhere next year, don’t worry :)
the guy isn’t “done”. he is still an excellent QB, just had a season-ending injury. He’ll come back. He won’t be the hottest commodity ever, but let’s face it, plenty of teams need QB help and he’d be an upgrade at the QB position for at least 5-6 NFL teams right now, if not more.

… i’ll tell you what though. After watching him closely these last two years, i’m a pennington fan. wherever he goes i’ll be rooting for the guy. total class of the NFL.

Pennington is a real warrior and a class act. Become a QB coach, Chad– the arm’s shot. He could be an NFL head coach someday.
