Delhomme remains the man in Carolina

John Fox is man of few words, but he was crystal clear with his support of quarterback Jake Delhomme Wednesday.

When asked if Delhomme remains his starter, Fox said, "I didn't think that was a question, but if that needs to be clarified, yes with a capital Y."

So there you go.

Fox was less emphatic two weeks ago when talking about Delhomme's status, but that was after his season-opening stinkbomb.  Since then, Delhomme hasn't played that poorly.

Perhaps more importantly, Fox knows the rest of his roster better than anyone.  The receiver group is not helping Delhomme and backup quarterback situation is shaky, not to mention the team's terrible rush defense.

Carolina faces Washington at home, Tampa Bay on the road, and Buffalo at home after their Week Four bye.

The Panthers aren't in great shape, but that schedules gives them the opportunity to return to respectable in short order.

So Fox is sticking to his guns. Well I guess what he's saying is, expect a new QB and a new HC in Carolina next year.

    To Carolina,

Please let Delhomme play. Our team having your 1st round pick next year is improved with every pick he throws.

    Sincerely,
    The Niners

Delhomme needs to get it together. Steve Smith is hurting me in my fantasy league

  4. VikesNut says: September 30, 2009 1:57 PM

Right, ask him again in a few weeks. Capital Y for now" like everything else in the NFL.

What's the most picks thrown in a season by a qb? I have a feeling that record will soon b falling

I'm still hoping to get the #1 overall pick from Carolina. Delhomme helps a lot.

Delhomme probably didn't know that you have Steve Smith on your roster. I'm sure he'll really try to raise his game now that it's public knowledge.

    City_Native.....good stuff!

It is painful to watch Delhomme on the field, however, sports talk radio in Charlotte has never been more entertaining. Rednecks (half of them drunk) calling in with their assessment of football. Perhaps a contest to pick a "Head Coach for a Week." Might fill more seats.

    To San Fran,

Please use our pick to select another bum like Crabtree. Or Davis. Or Balmer. Or Smith. Or Woods. Or Harris. Or Rumph.

    Sincerely,
    The Panthers.

It isn't all Delhomme's fault but it mostly is. If you think he hasn't played that poorly you haven't watched a lot of Panthers football. He is making poor reads and even when he makes a good read his throws often go awry. He's a mess and isn't helped by the fact that their offense is predictable.

    1st down: run

2nd down and 2nd down and >4: throw an incomplete pass or a 2-yard completion

3rd down: throw an incomplete pass or an interception

John Fox is just keeping his seat warm until the end of the year. How did the team, which is happy to trade a first next year for a second this year, not bring in some competition at QB?

  13. eckiles says: September 30, 2009 2:43 PM

"...yes with a capital WHY???" would have been more appropriate.

  14. GoBears84 says: September 30, 2009 2:46 PM

sure its a yes with a capital "Y".

That is, until they have a better option with a capital "O"

  15. longrodvanhungendong says: September 30, 2009 2:53 PM

I agree that it's not ALL Jake's fault but the QB touches the ball on every offensive play. I like Fox but I say they need to change the regime, clean up the cap (bye Peppers!) and look for the future QB. The QB of the future doesn't always need to be a pick from round 1.

If they had a better option, he would already be playing.

So who will be Cowhers first pick in the 2010 Draft???

  18. lolcopter says: September 30, 2009 3:52 PM

Looks like Delhomme is really suffering without his QB coach, Mike McCoy.

    Delhomme's loss is Orton's gain.

  19. JoeSchmoe says: September 30, 2009 3:57 PM

How can you not put airborne footballs that wind up in the hands of defenders on the shoulders of the QB? I know that Smith and he weren't on the same page on that route vs. DAL and Smith stepped up like a man and took responsibility, but c'mon, that was one of like what? 13 picks since last year's playoff debacle? Gimme a break.

POOR DECISION MAKING is entirely on the shoulders of Delhomme... don't care what play is called.

I have seriously declared a "Delhomme" award for my FF league, dedicated to the team that made the most boneheaded starts/sits decisions that lead to their team losing. I think everyone should hand one of these out in their leagues... It's good times.

Funny how no one looks at the actual game tape to see that the WR's are causing more issues than Delhomme has. Most of the Int's are because of bad WR's. Funny how no one places any the blame on Steve Smith or the shaky offensive line.

Cowher will most likely be the coach next year unless this man crush with "Delhomme" ends soon.

    Time to dump Steve Smith!

  23. TheWizard says: September 30, 2009 5:47 PM

    They're screwed. Jake's done.

That Super Bowl was a long time ago.

  24. DannyA says: September 30, 2009 6:15 PM

Fox needs to get his head of the clouds, Delhomme is done and keeping him No. 1 is just breaking up the team and hurting chemistry. Hope he enjoys looking for a new job next year.

"Please let Delhomme play. Our team having your 1st round pick next year is improved with every pick he throws. "

They'll just waste it, as usual. The 49ers havemade like ONE good first round draft pick since Bryant Young 15 years ago. Patrick Willis. Everybody else has been a scrub, a flash in the pan or an unqualified bust. Or would rather sit out than play for them (Crabtree).

    Bryant Young
    William Floyd
    JJ Stokes
    Jim Druckenmiller
    RW McQuarters
    Reggie McGrew
    Julian Peterson
    Andre Carter
    Mike Rumph
    Kwame Harris
    Rashaun Woods
    Alex Smith
    Vernon Davis
    Patrick Willis
    Joe Staley
    Kentwan Ballmer

    And before that...

    Dana Stubblefield
    Todd Kelly
    Dana Hall
    Ted Washington
    Dexter Carter
    Keith DeLong
    Harris Barton
    Terrence Flagler

That's every 49ers first round draft pick since Jerry Rice in 1985. 24 guys, most of them sucked. Maybe 3 or 4 of them were worthy of the pick spent on them.

  26. VoxVeritas says: September 30, 2009 6:30 PM

"What's the most picks thrown in a season by a qb?"

George Blanda with 42 (14 games) in 1962 (Oilers). They went 11-3. Go figure.

  27. slipkid says: September 30, 2009 9:19 PM

william floyd? dana stubblefield? harris barton? ted washington? julian peterson? joe staley?

    and now, vernon davis?

all damned productive, at some point, for someone, and usually the niners.

just cause you can type, dude, doesnt mean you can evaluate talent.

    besides, lest we all forget...

Dude, week 4 on the horizon. If you want any respectability check the waiver wire for QB's!

You know, got to deflect a little of the blame the more I watch the games over. If they had a true number 2 receiver, Jake wouldn't be quite as bad. Moose, we love you, but your old and slow now. Nothing to take the double and triple teams off of Smitty. Jarrett is a waste, slow off the line, can't get seperation, another USC receiver bust.

  30. texasPHINSfan says: October 1, 2009 12:15 PM

well in defense of delhomme, he is better than his stats would have you believe. his receivers give up on routes & sell him out.

the two INT's on MNF were not his fault, for instance.
