Brett Favre made one of the most memorable throws of the decade, but he wasn’t given the NFC player of the week award.
That honor went to Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb, who has drastically changed his reputation around the league and in Philadelphia in the span of two weeks. Kolb is the first quarterback — ever — to throw for 300 yards in his first two starts.
Favre was a nominee, but passing on him made sense. The play to Greg Lewis was mind-blowing, but the Vikings were stopped twice in the last half of the fourth quarter with a chance to win.
If the 49ers offense gained a first down or Dre Bly held on to a potential pick six, Favre wouldn’t have had the chance to make the Metrodome explode with happiness.
Favre’s teammate Percy Harvin deservedly won the special teams player of the week award for his 101-yard touchdown return on a kickoff. Lance Briggs, reminding folks that he was the best linebacker for the Bears before Brian Urlacher got hurt, won the NFC Defensive player of the week award for an all-around dynamic game against Seattle.
In the AFC, Maurice Jones-Drew won the offensive award, Brendan Ayanbedejo of the Ravens won the defensive award, and Jason Trusnik of the Jets won the special teams award, which is pretty tough to do for a player that doesn’t carry or kick the ball.
Player of Week Kolb
Unlikelier than Brett Favre

Favre was robbed. Kolb couldn’t carry his jock. At least Percy got what he deserved. Lance Briggs -not so much.
That “pfffffffttt” sound you hear is the air coming out of all the PFT Vick rumors we’ve been subjected to and summarily dismissed.
Good to see Kolb get a bit of respect, if only for a minute!
I was just thinking this morning, we were overdue for a decent quarterback controversy.
Florio – why do some of your articles appear on the mobile page WAY before the regular page, or sometimes vice versa. Other times a story will NEVER appear on the regular page and only the mobile page. What gives?
What college did he attend? Ahh right, Houston. That’s a familiar name this year.
I can already hear the Eagle fans bring back the “Trade McNabb” talk now that Kolb won this award.
Classic – another underhanded attempt to bash the greatest football player the world has ever known – deeply saddening.
Talk about biting the hand that feeds ya, ya know?!?!?
Billy Volek came within 26 total yards of pulling that 300/300 feat. 295 in his first start and 279 in his second.
If I remember correctly, Volek set a record for highest QB rating after first 10 starts. I have no idea if he still holds that record, though.
Nice to see someone acknowledge Kolb’s work since all the tv press did after the game was gush over scumbag Vick being on the field.
I am a birds fan, and I thought he played very well… but not Offensive Player of the Week well. That should have gone to DeSean Jackson or Brent Celek. But I did just get word that Jackson is NFC Offensive Player of the Month, which he rightfully deserves.
It was nice watching Kolb hit receivers on the run. McNabb has always been and always will be an inconsistant passer.
OH to be a fly on the wall at the McNabb House.
Donavan to his mom:
“Mommy…. It’s happening again”.
Mom:
“Don’t worry Donny, We’ll just do a Garcia on him”.
Donny:
“But Mommy It’s my team. MY TEAM!!!!”. Mom:
“Oh Donny… Have some Campbellās Chunky Soup… You’ll feel better”
Desean Jackson hopes that McNabb doesn’t come back. He’s never had the stat line that he’s had with Kolb. McNabb is bound to get hurt again so Kolb shouldn’t get too comfortable on the bench.
He’s better at hitting guys in stride…easier to get yacs when you don’t have to contort your body when making the catch.
I’m not saying he’s better…yet…just more accurate.
Kolb = best QB on the Eagirls team.
I called this, almost incredulously, about halfway through the 4th quarter on Sunday. The people around me at the bar all wagged their heads.
I would have thought that Pierre Thomas of the Saints would have been a worthy candidate for NFC Player of the Week. Thomas (Who only played in the second half – because of a knee injury and needed an IV before the game.), carried the ball 14 times for 126 yards (9.0 yards per carry) and scored 2 TD’s to lead the Saints to a road victory versus the Bills.

What do you expect from a #2 overall draft pick?
Kevin Kolb > Tony Romo

Kolb = best QB in the NFC East not named McNabb…
