144 square feet for Burress

Though receiver Plaxico Burress is still behind bars, he's not in a tiny eight-by-eight cell.

Per TMZ, Burress will be bunking alone in a room that is 12 feet long and 12 feet wide.

On the surface, it might not sound like much.  From a square-footage standpoint, it's a huge difference.

The standard cell has 64 square feet, usually with two inmates.  Burress will occupy 144 square feet.  Alone.

He also has a window, and natural light/darkness will go a long way toward preserving a sense of normalcy and sanity.

Burress will remain incarcerated through June 6, 2011 at the earliest.

How come he gets special treatment over the other criminals? I don't get that. How much did he pay to get this humble abode?

Oh good!....whew! I was really worried about how he was going to handle this whole jail thing.........whatever!!

Lucky bastard. That's a lot more than I had when I did that stretch for indecent exposure.

A whole 144 square feet? WTF, who decided to let him live in a palace? What's next, are they going to be feeding him delicious cheese sammiches, and watered down fruit punch?

If word of this gets out, I think you can expect even more dumb asses to be self-medicating their legs with lead treatments. Hell, if my bills keep growing, I may consider it myself. But with my bad luck, I'd get stuck in the 8'x8' cell with some perverted, corrupt Republican congressman. Ewww.

I know he broke the law and they made an example out of him so others will not bring guns into nightclubs, but why spend the money and waste the space on keeping him in jail? Put the man on house arrest and probation, save the cell for someone that is a threat to others and not just themselves.

  14. FlourideSoldOut says: October 1, 2009 10:39 AM

TMZ? Really? Wow Fluoride, you really have sold your soul. Just what is this post all about? You really need the mouse clicks? You got an encentive ladden contract with NBC?
Please separate the rumor mill between football related posts and your new infatuation with the TMZ-like gossip.
Seriously Florio, its become more prevalent since you sold out to NBC.
Do you even read and respond to the comments?

Well that sounds great! I'm going to carry a gun illegally and shoot myself in the leg. I'd rather sit in that cell all day than have to go to work and eke out a living and pay bills.

  20. mustbechris says: October 1, 2009 10:48 AM

2 years for shooting himself in the leg...I don't mind him having a bigger cell too much.

Wow, 12x12 cell. Christ, that's hardly like being in jail at all. And a window?? What's next, a butler? Where in that piece does it say he got special treatment? Do you think that is the only 12x12 cell in the prison? How would you know this?

Florio states "the standard cell is 64 square feet and has two inmates". This is not standard for all prisons, particularly not medium security ones, like Oneida. And he is in long-term protective custody, so he obviously wouldn't have a cell mate.

For Christ's sake people, stop getting all of your news from TMZ and PFT.

Eight by eight. Twelve by twelve. Who cares? Neither sounds too appealing.

Memo to self, prioritize avoiding incarceration. To do list:

    Today: stay out of jail
    Tomorrow: stay out of jail
    Saturday: stay out of jail

  30. bobinpuertorico says: October 1, 2009 11:29 AM

Florio, have you ever heard of solitary confinement? Being in a cell alone is normally an extra punishment. Of course Burress is alone for his safety, but this does not change the fact that it is much more of a punishment than if he shared his cell with another inmate. You might want to try thinking before writing, in order to stop sounding so dumb.

  31. texasPHINSfan says: October 1, 2009 11:29 AM

this sends a great message. athletes aren't above the law, but they DO get preferential treatment.

    please.

he needs to share a cell with a guy that will show him what incarceration is like.

If "Oz" has taught me anything, it's that 144 square feet in prison is STILL plenty of room to get gang-raped by a group of Aryans who bought access to you by supplying smack (aka "tits") to the Latinos via the kitchen as repayment to the Mafia for bribing the guards after the Warden's retarded cousin was hit by a DUI driver who turns out to be the same lawyer who convicted the Muslim that gave AIDS to the Governor via a contaminated needle stolen from the hospital wing where the Irish guy is having a love affair with a doctor also involved in love triangle with two gay bikers and the guy in the wheelchair.

Simplified: I bet Plax still gets ass-raped.

I think Burress would've been better suited to stay at Oneida when it was named something else... In 1894 the facility was named the Rome State Custodial Asylum for Unteachable Idiots.

it was stupid mistake but he got way to much time considering what everyone else has recieved in the NFL.
everyone knows this case wasnt about Burress shooting himself, it was more about sending a message to all the other players in the NFL.
he didnt hurt anyone but himself (luckily) & it wasnt like he was trying to hurt anyone else. i know players have to watch their back 24/7 with all the crazy people in the world & that was all he was doing but unfortunatly it went off.
i dont disagree with him getting some time but 1 year was more then enough for a mistake that didnt involve anyone but himself. theirs no doubt he learned his lesson before even went to prision & hopefully his family is ok while he's away.
i can see Vick , Stallworth & guys that involved innocent lives of animals or people but Burress didnt hurt anyone but himself (luckily)

    ^^^^^^^^

JFC, I hate when people bring this argument. Since you clearly do not understand the legal system, let me help:

    - He was sentenced to prison by a judge, not the NFL.
    - His prison time is dictated by NYC statute
    - He got LESS than the mandatory minimum, i.e., what you or I would have gotten if we were convicted of the same crime
    - What time Stallworth, Vick, Lewis et al, served has NO RELEVANCE to his case whatsoever. O.J. murdered two people, allegedly, so I suppose you think Rae Carruth should also be freed too, yes?

  47. Rafterman says: October 1, 2009 2:02 PM

They charged him under NY City's Sullivan Act.
The Sullivan Act was the basis for the DC Gun Ban which has already been struck down by the SCOTUS.

The law isn't worth the paper it's written on, the 2nd.
Amendment prevails. Bloomberg and his NYC crew are going to be eating shit when EVERYONE without a criminal record in NYC gets a CCP on demand. I can see his head exploding on CNN now! And there isn't a F' ing thing he can do about it.

So the Supreme Court interpretation of a BAN on guns in another city should apply to gun licensing laws in another city 200+ miles away.

Huh. Interesting interpretation. Lay off the jimson weed.

It's about the 2nd. Amendment to the Constitution,
last time anyone checked NYC falls under the Constitution. In that ruling the SCOTUS decided that the 2nd Amendment trumps local laws, the Sullivan Act is history. Meaning, CCP's to everyone without criminal record who wants one. Welcome to the new wild west.

So a ban on guns in one city is the same as tough gun registration laws in another city. That's what you're saying right?

Because last time I checked there was no ban on guns in NYC.

Because last time I checked there was no ban on guns in NYC.

----------------------------------------------------That's what the SCOTUS is saying. The 2nd. Amendment cannot be infringed by local laws. The Sullivan Act has no legal standing against the 2nd. Amendment. The Sullivan Act will be tossed, entirely or in part, as soon as it's challenged under the courts new ruling. Chicago and any other localities law that is deemed to infringe on the 2nd. Amendment will also be tossed.

  55. Adam-Chris Scheftersen says: October 2, 2009 5:51 PM

But it's still not a ban, right? But the law in DC was a ban, right?

Using your logic you could say they'll strike down the jaywalking ordinance in Podunk, Oklahoma based on this.

  56. Rafterman says: October 2, 2009 10:30 PM

Yes, the DC law was found to be an infringement to the 2nd. Amendment."The right to bear arms shall not be infringed." Pretty clear and straight forward, doesn't mention jaywalking anywhere.

The Sullivan Act has been under scrutiny for years as being to restrictive. It and the Chicago gun control law will most probably be the first to go.

Translation, it will a hell of a lot easier to carry a concealed weapon in NYC and Chicago, or any other jurisdiction that has infringed on the right bear arms.
