A huge thanks to NBC, and to you

In August 2009, we established a site record with nearly 25.2 million page views and 2.75 million unique visitors.

Usually, we see the traffic drop when the season starts, since there are so many other sources of NFL-related info.  (And there also are games that, you know, count.)

So we were blown away by the fact that, in the thirty days of September, our NBC-powered, hamsters-on-StarCaps servers hosted a total of 31.7 million page views and 3.1 million unique visitors.

To put that in perspective, we had in September 2008 a mere 13.8 million page views.

Much of the credit for the increase goes to NBC, which has been an ideal partner in our three-month relationship, promoting PFT through numerous vehicles:  NBCSports.com, msnbc.com, updates during weekend NBC Sports offerings (including Notre Dame football), Football Night In America, and Sunday Night Football.

We also thank every one of you for relying on us as a source for some of your information regarding the best sport in the world.  One month from today, the site turns eight years old.  Though I’m not quite sure what we ultimately envisioned when this thing was launched on November 1, 2001, the reality is better than anything we could have ever hoped for.

    Sure, thank NBC first.

  2. Kidekk says: Oct 1, 2009 10:32 AM

So there’s been an inverse relationship between quality and quantity.

  3. SaintsBucsPanthersSUKK says: Oct 1, 2009 10:34 AM

The increased page views is a result of the popular “Comment Submission Error- Please log in or register to post comment” page that pops up.

I came for the news, but I stay for the complete lack of editing.

i have been coming on here for 8 years? where is MY thank you, florio? i have been pushing this site for years….nbc has got nothing on me…

You should thank Favre for being a flake, Vick for being a killer and Roethlisberger for not knowing how to turn on a tv.
We just sat here and read about it.

  8. Resolution says: Oct 1, 2009 10:43 AM

Previous joke aside, you guys do a decent job. Nice work on getting -most- stories out asap, which is the best part of the site.
I like that you guys do not shove a brand name or product down our throats like many sites, nor do you show a (completely) unreasonable company bias, which is nice b/c I hate it when sites do that. The personal & team bias you guys show is actually pretty humorous most times so thats cool.

You want to thank me Florio? Bring back the comment ratings we’ve been complaining about since the move IN JULY. You can keep ignoring us like the Federal Government, but all that’s going to do is make people angry…and you don’t have a standing army.
    BRING BACK THE COMMENT RATINGS!!!!
    And have a bangin day.

  10. Greg from Louisiana says: Oct 1, 2009 10:49 AM

    Congratulations Florio.
I like it when someone’s dreams come to fruition personally. I am sure you have put in many hours to make this happen, and your family has to have been most understanding.
Your likeability has been a big factor in your success so improper delegation, while tempting and maybe even necessary, can lose the flavor of the site. Delegate carefully.

thank YOU mike for not relenting your style to the corporate (body without a soul) theatre PC bullshit.

  14. GiantintheRoom says: Oct 1, 2009 10:54 AM

Congrats Florio, I’ve been following PFT daily for 4 or 5 years now and it’s always been one of the most enjoyable, insightful and accurate (Except for that Bradshaw thing) sources of info out there. You’ve worked hard and deserve the recognition.
    Three Cheers!

  15. DaBillsDaaahhhBills says: Oct 1, 2009 10:54 AM

Thanks to you, Mr. Florio, and your staff.
I am very grateful that there is a site like PFT in existence. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Congrats Mike, and the entire PFT crew!! I, for one, thoroughly enjoy the site!! It is part of my daily routine regardless of whether it’s football season or not! Your success is hard earned and well deserved! I appreciate the effort you all put forth to make my collection of NFL news “one stop shopping”!!

good. now fix football nite in america which is the worst show in america. its like a pinball machine bouncing between hosts. and what the hell is tony dungy doing on the show. he has the tv personality of wet kleenex. he is horrible on the air and looks very uncomfortable in the position. i’ll be interest to see if this post shows up. then we’ll really know about how free PFT is to do their thing.

  24. tommyjcaps says: Oct 1, 2009 11:13 AM

    i love me some pft…
however…i don’t understand why you keep talking about page views…do you actually think that your readers care?
i read many websites and blogs and NONE of them ever mention their site traffic…it comes across as tacky and you patting yourself on the back…its like you are continually amazed and need to let everyone know that yes…you have a popular site
will you ever stop mentioning the page views and actually accept that you run a successful website?

  25. SmackMyVickUp says: Oct 1, 2009 11:13 AM

Having a non-politically correct view on issues goes a long way. Still follow bread and butter sports sites, espn, etc. Usually do so after following a link to an original article you posted though.
    —————
Sure, thank NBC first. – My thoughts exactly. Well said Vox.
Your power rankings are still off, but espn this past week was a joke, have been for this season. Think they throw darts at a board to decide.

  26. Resolution says: Oct 1, 2009 11:14 AM

Florio, you should also be thanking VOX directly. Despite the fact I will always disagree with VOX, he DOES generate an amazing number of reponses for you, and thus page hits for you. Basically VOX is inadvertently your #1 reader and fan and deserves your adoration.
p.s. That doesn’t mean we will not continue to rip his comments.

  27. Sundayjack says: Oct 1, 2009 11:14 AM

Heh. I still have the aqua PFT t-shirt and the faded pink hat from the please-donate-t0-our-site days.

Agreed on the above, but most importantly you left out Bill Belichick misinterpreting the rules.

“so how about a fan giveaway or something? and not some dusty old book. how about a football signed by plaxico, or vick, or rex grossman or something.”
Save Florio a ton of trouble and just write an X on a football, nobody will ever know the difference.

  31. ZombieRevolution says: Oct 1, 2009 11:23 AM

Congrats. Some of us hammer you when you make errors, but that’s pure jealousy. Not everyone can start a website and build it up to this degree.
That being said, you are now professional writer and a quick review of your posts prior to sending might eliminate the editing gaffs.

  32. texasPHINSfan says: Oct 1, 2009 11:28 AM

i think it has more to do with your radio & tv appearances (and mention in print when referenced by other authors) than with your relations with NBC.
if i’m being honest, i prefer the version of the site pre-NBC, when we could rate comments and there was less pimping of the corporate parent.
i almost miss the sprint pimping and the archuleta workout tape ads. :D

  33. mustbechris says: Oct 1, 2009 11:39 AM

I think Vox makes up half of your page views. You should thank him before NBC.

  34. Shademan says: Oct 1, 2009 11:49 AM

PFT lost a lot of credibility with the whole Bradshaw fiasco years ago, but Mike you have done a good job of turning it around. Props to you man. Now send me a book. Bitch.

  35. VoxVeritas says: Oct 1, 2009 11:56 AM

“Florio, you should also be thanking VOX directly.”
He has, several times. Usually as a prelude to bitching at me. “Thanks for all your comments, BUT…”
I generate so much traffic he’s given me a free subscription to PFT for life. My people are currently negotiating with NBC for the same deal. Hug a root, haters!

Really??? You’d take florio, the most biased web site comber, over REAL, ACTUAL, REAL football reporters who do actual reporting and real investigating? Florio goes to espn.com and cnnsi.com to steal stories, in case you didnt know. Also, in case you werent aware, peter king is the guy breaking most of those stories on cnnsi. And you’d take the guy who steals from the guy instead of the actual guy….that makes no sense… Wow, you must have zero brain activity going on up there. Peter king is florio’s daddy when it comes to all things football. Are you kidding me? You must be mike florio posing as someone else…
The bottom line-this site is okay when flori-ho isnt taking cheap shots at everyone and everything non giants related, but that isnt often…

  37. Dewey ActSwooned says: Oct 1, 2009 12:17 PM

I bet Channing Crowder gives you more site hits than ayone else–as a holdover until the REAL hits can be delivered.

“Really??? You’d take florio, the most biased web site comber, over REAL, ACTUAL, REAL football reporters who do actual reporting and real investigating?”
The thing I respect about Florio is that he’s biased and in your face about it. I mean it’s so obvious. Other guys try to hide it. I have come to the conclusion that Florio is a homer for any team that calls home within 250 miles of Wheeling, WV and east of the Ohio River.

  39. pondbridge says: Oct 1, 2009 12:42 PM

This site drives me nuts with its wild rumours, occassional inaccuracies and the sucking up to the new overlords at NBC. It is also the best NFL site on the earth and I check it 5 times a day. Indispensible.

    @thecree
Did you really just call King Peter and Olberwoman “real, actual football reporters”?
King Peter amounts to a snivelling, mincing groupie suck-up who sidles up to a handful players so he can name-drop amidst his dumb opinions about coffee and pop culture.
Olberwoman is just another snide quippy narcissistic douchebag ESPN re-tread recycling the cliche buzzwords and pop culture references of the time–knock one of his crooked and take away the glaring political agenda and you’ve got Stewart Scott.
“Real, actual football” reporters? My lazy left eye…

Florio, congrats to you and your staff. You have made sitting on the john more enjoyable than I have ever known before. For the past few years, I have had much longer bathroom visits, with you to thank. I dont know what I would do with the time between 8:30 to 5pm without PFT, and I owe it all to you.
Now pay us back and fix the damn blackberry application. I need to see everything that has been posted, not just the top 7 stories, and scrolling through them is much easier on the crapper than having to click on each individual story.

  43. KILLER FIN says: Oct 1, 2009 1:55 PM

Even in thank yous the readers are ungraftful. Im starting to wonder about the NFLs followers. And to the moron who took this time to compain about about not having the old comment system (and somehow squeeze a jab in at the government) All that system did was allow the lot of you to act like small children on every blog. Florio and the gang sometimes Im a turd to you but you guys to a great job, thanks-

  45. sim448 says: Oct 1, 2009 1:58 PM

  46. Mike McCarthy's Moobs says: Oct 1, 2009 2:28 PM

Your statistics are inflated because the page automatically refreshes every 15 minutes or so. This is just a cheap tactic to artificially juice up your stats. Whenever I see a post talking about the amazing stats since joining NBC, I just picture that Tony Mandarich cover of Sports Illustrated. The incredible bulk, indeed. You’re not a star left tackle, PFT! You’re nothing but a mediocre guard for the Colts.

  47. Greg B. says: Oct 1, 2009 3:02 PM

Amid all of that back slapping and high fives you doing – maybe one day you’ll finally some time to actually pay some attention to the site.
The Login problem continues with no explanation.
There are no comment ratings as you promised.
I much prefer the old PFT – may old ID actually worked there too.
Take a little time out from all that glory basking and at least get the site right Florio – the little things do still matter.
