Marion Barber should play this week

On most teams, the coach gives injury updates.

For the Cowboys, the owner does.  (And this is not a criticism; the more information anyone from a NFL team wants to give us, the better.)

Asked about Marion Barber’s status for Sunday’s game in Denver, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was rather optimistic:

“He did more [Wednesday] than we thought and will have expectations. . . . I bet he’s pretty aggressive out here in practice, listening to how he
responded [Wednesday] and listening to these trainers, he should be
able to go. I’m glad he’s looking as good as he did.”

Barber was in full pads at practice Thursday, while Felix Jones was nowhere to be found, as expected.

It sounds like Barber and Tashard Choice will split up the workload against Denver Thursday in an interesting test of conference and divisional power.

The AFC West was believed to be one of the worst divisions in football before the year, while the NFC East is generally thought of as the best.

If the Broncos win, we’ll be more inclined to agree with Matt Mosley’s assessment that the NFC East is overrated.

UPDATE: Jones also confirmed that his fellow former Razorback Felix Jones will miss Sunday’s game.

I’m always encouraged to see Jerry step up and take charge, even though these types of announcements are usually the responsibility of the coaching staff.

The NFC in general is overrated, they have two viable teams, and the sorry Vox the Cowboys aren’t one of them. Many of teams in the AFC that are crapped on each year by everyone are better, hands down than the damn near all of the NFC.
I am a little biased on the subject due to being in an AFC town and AFC state but I believe, (stating in advance that I’m in know way an expert, as proved by my shi**y fantasy football teams), but the Bengals would make the playoffs almost every year if they were an NFC team.

are you kiddin me? the bengals? maybe if they played det or stl every week but to say they’d make the playoffs just because they’re in the nfc is ridiculous. did you read your statement before you posted it? maybe you should run it by someone next time before you hit submit.

  11. tripschaos says: Oct 1, 2009 4:11 PM

There is no way the bengals would be a playoff team in the NFC over the past few years, maybe this year.
NFC Teams that were absolutely better than the Bengals over the past few years, consistently:
    Giants
    Eagles
    Cowboys
    Saints
    Cardinals
    Packers
    Bears
    Vikings
Falcons/Carolina/Tampa (one of each, depending on the year)

You may not be an expert in football (or grammar since it’s “I’m no expert”, not “I’m know expert”) but you make up for rudimentary skills in those categories by being 100% certifiably delusional if you think the Bengals would be in the playoffs most years in the NFC. Remind us all again which teams in the NFC Cincy beat last year? Oh wait…it was the lowly Redskins.

At least you admit you are no expert. The past 3 years, the Bengals have played the NFC 12 times and have won 4 games. C’mon…. the bengals would not have made the playoffs the last couple years in the NFC. They were just bad. Maybe this year… but they might make the AFC playoffs this year too.
The only part of the NFC east that is overrated is the cowboys. Pretty sure the skins have shown they have no reason to be rated at all. and the Eagles & Giants are legit contenders.
Balance of power still falls in the AFC I would say, but not nearly the gap it used to be.

  22. AirlineGuy says: Oct 1, 2009 4:33 PM

Jones was saying all last year that Romo would play with the broken hand too.
I’m thinking there is a difference between an owner and a coach as far as rules about how to list injuries. A coach has to be more careful so not to get in trouble with the league, but are owners held to the same standards? Can Jones get in trouble if he says a player is out and then the guy plays like a coach can?

  23. NINERSFAN75 says: Oct 1, 2009 4:45 PM

Jerry Jones interferes way too much with his coaching staff and he should of learned by now that you cant win that way. I dont know how many people noticed it, but on the coverage of Monday nights’ Cowboys game you could see Jerry Jones tell Wade Phillips to go for it on 4th down. The Cowboys were faced with fourth and goal from the 1 yd line. First the camera shows Wade Phillips just looking around like he was waiting for something. Then the camera pans to Jerry Jones in the owners box and you can read his lips when he says “Lets go for it”. Next you see Wade Phillips listening to somebody on the headset and then he goes for it on 4th down. If Jerry Jones really calls down from his owners box to micro manage the game thats pretty pathetic. You’re never gonna get a big time coach like Shanahan or Holmgren if you dont let the coach do his job. The most successful owners are the ones who hire good people to run their franchise and then stay out of the way and let those people do their job.

  24. NoKoolaidCowboy says: Oct 1, 2009 4:48 PM

Not surprising to hear Jerry Jones would speak on matters that normally require a coach because he micro manages. And there is no bigger puppet coach in the NFL right now like Wade Phillips.
I just hope that The Barbarian isn’t rushing this thing.

  25. BradyGazelle says: Oct 1, 2009 4:58 PM

I noticed Jerry telling Wade to go for it on 4th down too!

  26. paranoidandroid says: Oct 1, 2009 5:03 PM

i agree that wade is a puppet. seems like jerry is waiting for wade to fail so that he’ll have a reason to promote garrett to head coach. i don’t necessarily have a problem with that except the man’s play calling has been pretty suspect.

  41. Whododrums says: Oct 1, 2009 6:28 PM

I’m a Bengals fan to say I’m delusional is like saying water is wet, but playing two games a year against the Steelers, (the winner of the most Super Bowls in NFL history as any Steelers fan will tell you over and over again), and Ravens every year gives me a little room to talk. Again, I’m a die-hard Bengals fan so I have to be a little ridiculous as well. I do however wish we could play great teams like the Lions, Redskins, Falcons, Bucs, Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks and Bears twice a year, who have all had great teams over the years but are easily as bad as us in general, and get to play minimally two very sub-par games every year against at least two divisional opponents, we just get the Browns.
Sorry if I offended but I didn’t start the NFC is over rated thing, I just agree with it. This has not always been true, of course but in recent history, say the last 15 years or so, yes.

  42. brewcrewe says: Oct 1, 2009 6:43 PM

Ok… We all rip each other pretty hard in here, but for the most part, most comments are slightly intelligent, but the comment from whododrums, that the Bengals would go to the playoffs every year in the NFC, is the most ignorant thing I have ever read. In the past 3 years the Bengals have won 4 out of 12 games against NFC opponents. I will be the first to admit I am biased to a fault with the Cowboys, as most fans are with there teams, but…….dear God, Have you ever watched a football game, or does your knowledge of football consist of Super Tecmo Bowl and fantasy football.

Sorry Florio, I didnt know that you made all decisions based on 4 games into the season. How bout I bet that this site and you are overrated, and that the broncos finish in the last half of the afc with the damn bengals. When you have the most valuable stadium and sports franchise in the world and fans all over the country, you are America’s team.
