Odom bags AFC Defensive Player of the Month

The seven-sack September turned in by Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom has earned him the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month award.

Odom rolled up five of those sacks in Week Two, turnstiling inexperienced Packers tackle Darryn Colledge for four of them. Colledge, normally a guard, was playing in place of injured left tackle Chad Clifton during the Bengals’ upset win in Wisconsin.

It’s a good story for Odom, who joined the Bengals as a free agent in the 2008 offseason and then injured his foot during the first practice of training camp. He battled the injury all season and was basically ineffective with a total of three sacks. This offseason he says he put on “30 pounds” (??!!) to go from 250 to 280, and it’s made a difference.

Andre Smith said he added 30 pounds too, but got a vastly different reaction.

This is a tainted award, how proud can you be when your success came against Green Bay ?

  3. Topher says: Oct 1, 2009 11:45 AM

Gained 30 pounds in the offseason and turned from an average player to Defensive Player of the Month.
    hmm….
Did he gain hair loss, acne and a bad attitude to go along with all that?

  4. Bengals Douche says: Oct 1, 2009 11:47 AM

And here come all those haters saying he only did it b/c he played against a 3rd stringer. He’s a beast and will continue to show that throughout the year.

“during the Bengals upset win in Wisconsin.”
Upset? I was very happy they won.

AFC/NFC defensive/offensive players of the week… Who cares, who cares, who cares…. (Repeat as necessary.)

  8. Football says: Oct 1, 2009 12:07 PM

Actually only 3 of his sacks came against Colledge. He had 1 when he kicked inside to DT on a 3rd down. So of his 7 sacks in September:
    1 against Clifton
    2 against Ryan Clady
    3 against Colledge
1 against some combination of GB interior linemen.

Pretty proud when you’re playing for the Bengals.

Jared Allen plays our shitty O line this week…. get ready for your October award mullet head.

2 were before Clifton went out. He had 2 by halftime. Clifton couldn’t keep up with Odom, twisted his ankle, and then C0lledge slid over and got worked for the remainder of the game.
Osi Umenyiora’s 6-sack outing was against a back-up LT. Quit raining on his parade, how else is a player gonna hang those kind of numbers in a single game.

Well considering Green Bay was supposed to be a “good team” this year, it’s a pretty good accomplishment. I haven’t seen any other DE’s getting around Green Bay’s line the way Odom did so apparently he was doing something right. Quit hatin.

Technically, Winston Justice is a starter now, so there goes that argument…………………

I think Rita Colledge and Charlize Clifton should at least get best supporting actress awards for thier role in this award.

So Kloe Kardashian was the AFC Defensive Player of the Month? wow.
Ok, triple U. Stupidest comment of the day winner. But I just had to get it out of my system.

And will you be spouting the same shit if/when Jared Allen wins defensive player of the month after rolling up some sacks on GB?
    Didn’t think so. Hypocrite.

  18. CurseofBoJackson says: Oct 1, 2009 1:15 PM

Wow, so since it wasn’t a patriot or steeler no one wants to give the guy credit. No surprise I guess, site’s full of blowhards and debbie downers anyway. Twan or Peko end up with two plus sacks this Sunday, no question.

  19. Chickenfoot says: Oct 1, 2009 1:41 PM

Think you have to wait for the spout off, before you can call hypocrite. But, you packer fans never jump the gun on anything……
Adam, Mommy need to change your dirty diaper or what?

Wrong. Ryan Clady hasnt given up 2 sacks in his entire career let alone in one game.

  21. Topher says: Oct 1, 2009 2:37 PM

    Shademan,
Steroid Boy got two sacks against the Broncos. If it wasn’t Clady giving them up, who was it?

  22. kappa08 says: Oct 1, 2009 2:43 PM

…and he managed to marry a Kardashian…errr my bad, wrong Odom

  23. marcduke says: Oct 1, 2009 3:45 PM

@ Bengals Douche – fitting name by the way – the Packers have giving up 12 sacks already this year – their O-line stinks.
And Charles Woodson got the NFC award but he’s washed up, right Al Davis?

  24. gorky says: Oct 1, 2009 4:31 PM

    Topher…
Odom got his 2 sacks on Ryan Harris not Ryan Clady.
Ryan Harris is a very good right tackle. He only gave up I believe one sack last year.
But Clady has only given up half a sack in his career. He actually set an NFL record this week against the Raiders. Longest start of a career of any offensive lineman without giving up a full sack.
Here is a link to footage of Odom’s sack. He got by Ryan Harris, meanwhile Ryan Clady stone walls your other guy:

  25. gorky says: Oct 1, 2009 4:36 PM

    Whoops.
I watched it again, and he didn’t beat Harris either.
He attacked the interior of the OLine. I’m not sure who he beat.

  26. Topher says: Oct 1, 2009 7:59 PM

“Ryan Clady stone walls your other guy”
Please, please, please don’t confuse me for a Bengals fan.
But thanks for clearing Clady’s name on the Odom sacks. Clady is, in my opinion, the best offensive tackle in football and I would hate to see his name soiled by being connected to a hack like Odom.
