Cerrato responds to critics by flashing his rings

In a Thursday column, Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post placed blame for the Redskins’ struggles at the feet of the men who head the organization — owner Daniel Snyder and his right-hand man, executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato.

In a rant directed primarily at Snyder, Jenkins calls Cerrato “a proven failure.”

According to Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog (a product of the Post), Cerrato responded during Thursday night’s episode of Redskins Nation.

“I’m gonna send all my Super Bowl rings and national championship rings
and conference championship stuff and I’m gonna e-mail it,” Cerrato said.  “You know, I’m gonna send her pictures of all those, you
know, because she probably doesn’t know what they look like.”

(Lighten up, Vinny.  I mean, it’s not like she called you a dork or something.)

Here’s our take — as if anyone cares.  Cerrato has received scant criticism for the fate of the team, and the reasons aren’t all that clear.  In our view, Cerrato has gotten a pass because everyone realizes that Snyder will give him one.  So Redskins fans have resigned themselves to the fact that Cerrato will always be around, like stretch marks.

It was Snyder, after all, who brought Cerrato back after Marty Schottenheimer had used his one season of full control over the roster to fire Cerrato.

That said, we don’t think that Cerrato is a “proven failure.”  In our view, he’s a success.  In an industry with harshly cruel accountability and constant turnover, Cerrato has finagled what is by all appearances a job that will last until he retires — or until Snyder sells the team.

His “conference championship stuff” ? What a needledick.

You have a solid defense and an offense that averages 12 points a game.
You go out and spend $100 mil on a defensive player.
    Pure genius.
Coulda maybe upgraded the o-line or gotten a decent backup RB.

  3. rooster75 says: Oct 3, 2009 12:10 AM

Umm, Vinny, how many Super Bowl rings have you won with the Redskins? Real tough talk when your team just lost to the Lions. Of course, Cerrato and Michael deftly sidestepped the actual content of Jenkins’ excellent column.
It’s embarrassing to be a ‘Skins fan under this regime.

    Welcome to New Dork Florio.

  5. Mangy66 says: Oct 3, 2009 12:16 AM

Basically, until the Redskins move to L.A., Snyderrato will exist in DC throughout most of our football fandom.
Hard to root for the team…but I guess I’ll be there this Sunday losing my voice again.
    Hail!

  6. Bubbasgotgas says: Oct 3, 2009 12:28 AM

I think the only reason Cerrato has a job is because him and Danny are dating.

  7. just_a_cigar says: Oct 3, 2009 12:33 AM

Umm, has anyone ever thought, you know, Daniel and Vinny are, you know, Danny and Vin. Gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Give me a better explination for why he gets a lifetime pass….

  8. chapnasty says: Oct 3, 2009 12:44 AM

I dont know what crack pipe you are on Florio but Cerrato sucks. I dont care what he did in the past, that obviously doesnt mean a damn thing in todays football or else joe gibbs would still be coaching and they would have 3 rings by now.

  9. just_a_cigar says: Oct 3, 2009 12:47 AM

Come on, figure it out. Where else does constant failure result in a job you couldn’t lose if you tried… And lost. And magically got it back after a solid season by a great HC wasn’t enough to keep you gone. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Who gives a rat’s ass about what a woman reporter says about football?

  11. GregO says: Oct 3, 2009 3:12 AM

I like how Vinny takes credit for victories he contributed little to nothing to. He made Lou Holtz’s travel arrangements for a few years, carried Bill Walsh & George Siefert’s water for a little while and he drove the once proud 49ers into the worst tailspin in franchise history after ascending to the top of the player personnel totem pole (Jim Druckenmiller anyone?).
The bottom line is that he has no track record of success when in the position of chief decision maker at any level.
    What a delusional tool.

Um……what Super Bowl rings? With the 49ers? He wasn’t their GM. Dude has done nothing but fail. That story was dead on.
Florio, can we please stop talking about that crappy Deadskin franchise? They’re doomed, and destined to finish last……again.

Reminds me of the loser Cowpie fans that live in the past.
It’s all about what have you done lately…not 5, or 10 years ago (or in the case of Cowpie fans, even longer).

  15. wvugrad00 says: Oct 3, 2009 7:30 AM

Cerrato is not the cause of the problems in DC, but he is helping it along. DC wont get right until Snider decides to take a step back, thats when the fans will see if Cerrato can build a team, which I doubt.

  16. bigbillnocmd says: Oct 3, 2009 8:00 AM

That episode of redskin nation was emberassing. you had a fan e-mail with a legit beef and Vinny makes that arrogant ass comment. “say ladies, you want to um, check out my rings?” oh yeah and btw, “I was in a karate movie as well.” What a phuckin jerk off. I was ashamed to be a fan with that asshole trying to put down a fan with his past “success”.
Well Vinny, what the hell have you done lately? You lost to the lions, barely squeeked by the rams and now in great position for another upset against another first time starting qb. Your a jerk.
I hope you learn something from this Danny. If you ever bring in a football guy and let them run your team, not only will the post get off your back, maybe so will the fans. Just imagine, you will win more games too.

  17. Run1out says: Oct 3, 2009 8:00 AM

Mike, you say he is a success because he has been able to keep a job for this long? BFD! His success should be measured by how well the teams do year after year. That should have been obvious to you. I guess its just like some union people that don’t do shit because they are protected and know the rest of us will do enough work to carry their sorry asses. I would expect more out of you if you hadn’t let us down so much lately. I guess your stretched too thin now with all you have on your plate.

  18. Hawkeye says: Oct 3, 2009 8:21 AM

Everyone in Redskin County knows Snyder and Cerrato are deeply in love.

  19. Mike Florio says: Oct 3, 2009 8:23 AM

    @Run1out . . . .
I was being sarcastic. Sorry for not making it more clear. Really, I’m sorry. I’m not being sarcastic about that. Really, I’m not.

  20. HAILSKINS says: Oct 3, 2009 8:32 AM

Hey asshole Cerrato the proof is in the pudding. The team in all of the years you have been a part of it has been shitty to mediocre. So stop being delusional and get a grip. The talent is not as good as you say it is and there appears to be no actual progress in a positive direction.

FOUND THIS ON LINE. MAY HAVE GOTTEN A PLAYER OR TWO IN THIS YEAR’S DRAFT, BUT WHAT IS THAT SAYING ABOUT TOO LITTLE? AND $100M FOR DT? WHY NOT $40M LIKE GIANTS SPEND ON #2 FREE AGENT DT AND SPREAD THE OTHER $60M AROUND TO SAY…OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, LEGIT WR? QB?

I feel your pain. Us Giants fans suffered a long time before the Giants ownership was embarashed by the fans (plan flying over the game complaining of 20 years of bad football ).
Until your owner wants to move in a new direction, your team will flounder.

My god, I thought the Cowboys had drafted like crap since Jerry Jones took over, but your list makes Jerry look almost brilliant. I feel better already!

  27. Rhode Kill says: Oct 3, 2009 9:13 AM

Wow. Great homework by “donewithdansnyder” on this one. Of those Redskin drafts, I see 6 legitimate starters and 7 decent backup or marginal starting players in 9 drafts.
His San Fran haul? T.O., Jeremy Newberry and that’s about it. Schulters was a decent player.
Overall, that is a sad state of affairs and this guy has no business being in control of that front office. There were some drafts in there that were 7-9 players deep that didn’t yield a single legit NFL player.
    Cerrato Cucks.

  28. dcfan-1212450 says: Oct 3, 2009 9:26 AM

Some of his draft picks lately have been solid, but overall bad. We traded a second round pick and a first round next year for the Jason Campbell pick… And for the last time guys, look at how Albert Haynesworth’s contract is structured. Football contracts are not guarenteed and a majority of his money would be paid in signing bonus’s and if he actually played out his contract. If any of you think the Skins are going to pay out that contract your stupid. Maybe half. And i HATE defending Cerrato, but on that contract no one ever seems to know all the details. Most important thing about Cerrato is the trades and the focus of his picks, not necessarily the picks themselves. He trades draft picks away for players with little value or 1 year loans who had minimal impact. And he does not address primary needs in the draft, such as Offensive Line in this past draft. I think we waited until the 7th round this year to grab a lineman…

  29. OrbeaRider66 says: Oct 3, 2009 10:25 AM

GregO said it best: “What a delusional tool.”
As I recall, isn’t Cerrato the *ONLY* executive fired by the Niners in and around their heyday?
I was living in DC when Vern Troyer …. I mean Dan Snyder … bought the Redskins and immediately installed Cerrato to run things. What is Cerrato’s brilliant, unique move? Give Deion on a big ass contract so he can do for the Foreskins what he did for the Niners. Good move.
How does he keep his job? I can only guess that Cerrato has pictures of Snyder naked with farm animals. Nothing else makes sense.

  30. WetHog says: Oct 3, 2009 12:18 PM

Snyder won’t give Cerrato the boot because if he does Snyder will have to find someone new to let him win at racketball.
