Favre to Packers fans: "You just have to let it go and just move on"

In an interview with ESPN’s Jon Gruden aired a day before the greatest regular-season game since the last overhyped regular-season game, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was asked a simple question.

“What do you say to all the Packer fans?  They gotta be confused.”  (Kudos to ESPN’s technicaly staff for scrubbing out any “F” words.)

“It was 16 great years,” Favre said.  “I hope they enjoyed it, they appreciated . . . that run as much as I did,” Favre said.  “You can’t take that away.  You just have to let it go and just move on.”

Favre also suggested that he might be a little emotionally spent after last week’s win over the 49ers.  But he stopped short of suggesting that it might keep him from bringing everything he can bring to Monday night’s game.

Meanwhile, though he been great in the MNF booth, Gruden at one point reminded us of Brucie from the “we can kill them” scene in The Longest Yard when he asked Brett, “How much do really just want to beat them?”

“Let it go and move on”
Yeah – that pretty much describes Favre’s attitude towards football, doesn’t it?
And here I was worried that Favre would say something hypocritical.

  5. TheWizard says: Oct 4, 2009 9:33 AM

right………..like, by playing a retirement jerk-around game for six years, and jumping to a division rival…..
    I see.
Believe me, son, we want to do nothing more than let you go. Please make possible.

The more this guy talks, the less I remember him as a great QB.
Of all the teams in the NFL, this guys goes out of his way to sign with one of Green Bay’s archest of rivals, and then has the balls to actually say that Packer’s fans need to get over it? Brett, it’s YOU who needs to get over it, whatever slight you felt the Packard organization inflicted on you.
Reminds me of a guy that divorces his wife, then ends up going out with her best friend – of all the women in the world – and tells her to get over it. Just the fact that he sought out the Vikings says that he did this as a big “F you” to the Packers and every idiot fan who overpaid for a #4 jersey.
Douche bag is becoming too nice of a term for this a-hole.

  7. LarryBird18 says: Oct 4, 2009 9:37 AM

    From a 25+ year packer fan….
I’ve moved on, I’m glad Brett is gone.
No more untimely int’s, no more waffling and wondering all offseason if he’s gonna play, no more blaming recievers for bad throws, no more security at the door to the bathroom in gb bars so Favre can ‘have his fun”, no more constant gushing from commentators about how that throw was so Favre like, no more statue qb who can’t run, no more blown playoff games
Good riddance from one Packer fan who was more than glad to let this headcase go.

  11. Mattmanus says: Oct 4, 2009 9:56 AM

good luck with your new quarterback, vikings fans. you know, the one who sucked, was washed up, and you loved playing against cause he threw soooo many interceptions. i love watching all of you hypocrites get on your knees and worship the mighty #4 now. it takes an ex-Packer to even give you guys a glimpse of winning a championship. but we all know how well your team does in the playoffs. but hey, congratulations on your “new” Ferrari with 250,000 miles on it.

This is great. The NFL is taking a page from the WWF. I would love to see favre come out before the game and take the mic and say ” for all you fat, out of shape, ugly cows in Green Bay here is what a real QB looks like” then he can take a steel chair or ring bell and pearl harbor aaron rodgers while he is warming up. Then bart starr can come out of the stands and lead the pack to victory, perfect.

  22. Wonderlic---myballs says: Oct 4, 2009 10:25 AM

Right on vikings rule. My thoughts exactly. Who keeps bringing up the Green Bay past? The media and the cheese dicks that CAN’T move on from Favre. Sure Brett is so sick of the past being beat into his brain everyday.
And to brainless chuds like you Richm2256,why did he go out of his way to sign with the Vikes, one of the arch rivals as you say?? Simple. They are loaded with talent. Do you really think he would of came to Vikes if they had a pathetic O line or a plain Jane back like Grant such as the Pack?? Hell no! Favre has the keys to the best car he has driven in a long time .By the looks and sounds of it….he is having a hell of a good time. Take your Hatorade elsewhere Packer jackers.

  23. Youngs79 says: Oct 4, 2009 10:26 AM

Favre was asked a question and he answered it. Get over it. Packer fans, Favre should be the least of your worries. With your inferior offensive line, I’d be much more worried about Jared Allen and the Vikings D-Line. That is where turnovers and possible points are going to come from.

  24. hsf09 says: Oct 4, 2009 10:29 AM

Hmm what if we left your sorry behind in Atlanta where you had zero chance to play and would have stayed drunk.
Larrybird18 go back to day one :
Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round, 33rd overall in the 1991 NFL Draft.[15] On July 19, 1991, Favre agreed to a three-year, $1.4 million contract with a reported signing bonus of $350,000. [16] Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville did not approve of the drafting of Favre, saying it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game.[17] Favre’s first pass in an NFL regular season game resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown. He only attempted four passes in his career at Atlanta, was intercepted twice, and completed none of them.
Without a coach like Holmgren,Gruden and Mooch to help him would # 4 ever have been anything at all ?

  27. Twiz says: Oct 4, 2009 10:46 AM

Most of the Packer fans seem to forget a few things……
When Favre wanted to come back to the Packers, he was told he could compete for the job with Rodgers. Anyone would take that as a direct slap in the face.
The Packers management *KNEW* he could still play, *KNEW* he was still good and that is why they added to the Jets trade that they would be compensated with 3 first round picks if Favre was traded to the Vikings. No other team was mentioned, just the Vikings. What does that tell you? They were scared, period. Scared of his play, scared of what he might tell the Vikings, plain ol scared!
Many Packer fans started petitions trying to get management to bring Favre back at **ANY** cost. Those fans are most likely screaming the loudest about how he is washed up, etc. Talk about hypocrisy! There were far more fans wanting him back than wanting to let him leave. Hard to believe when you look at various posts now-a-days, but it is absolute fact!
I have admitted it before, and I will say it again. I am a die hard Vikings fan, but seeing Favre in purple is a lil hard to swallow. However, unlike some dumbazzes on this site, I know he is better than any QB the Vikes had previous and I want the Vikes to win. If that means one of my most “hated” players becomes a Viking, so be it.
Anyone that questions Favre’s motives for playing the game obviously didn’t watch last weeks game and didn’t watch any highlights. No, I am not talking about the end of the game, but the pass to Berrian when Farve ran down and threw that block. Not a single one of you has a leg to stand on saying he is only playing to “stick it to the Packers”. How many other QB’s do you know that will run 30+ yards down the field to help the WR? I can think of maybe 4-5.

  28. just_a_cigar says: Oct 4, 2009 10:47 AM

You people are morons. How is he a douchebag, exactly? He said it was a great run, he won’t forget it, neither should Packer fans. Now it’s time to move on.
Yeah, what a douche. =Time to find a new punching bag. Favre is one of the most entertaining and best players in football history. He never would have left Green Bay if Thompson didn’t force him to, and there are about 100 or so pricks in the NFL that deserve to be bashed a lot more than Favre.
Brett Favre saved the Green Bay Packers. The team never could have survived the transition to the modern NFL world if it weren’t for him. Just quit being little b!tches and let the man play football.

Obviously, from these posts some Packer fans still can’t get over it. I don’t blame it though, they now have a QB who wins 6 games a season. The OLineman hate him because holds on to the ball way to long and leaves the pocket too early. He refuses to take the pressure off his line by doing short quick throws, instead he waits for that stat padding throw. Worst of all he and all the other Ted Thompson fans, blames everybody else on the team for the losses except themselves.
A lot of Packer fans have stopped being Packer fans and have become Ted Thompson fans.

Favre is right, let it go and move on. Why didn’t the fans act this way when Vince Lombardi left GB and went to the Redskins? Why didn’t 49er fans freak out this bad when Montana played for KC? Why didn’t SD fans blow a gasket when Junior Seau left SD and went to Miami?
Point being, the reason that Favre played for NY and now Minnesota is just as much as Ted Thompson’s and Mike McCarthy’s fault as it is Brett Favre’s.. If you want to be pissed at Favre, fine.. You also need to show hatred towards those two morons running your team.

  40. gopher says: Oct 4, 2009 11:13 AM

I really don’t understand all the hate about Favre and who he plays for. It was made clear by the Packers that they did not want him back so he moved on and so should everybody else. Does he want to beat the Packers, of course but it is no different then anything else in life. I know a guy who was a sales manager for a major computer company and very good at it, the company let him go because they wanted younger and cheaper people, my friend got a job in sales with another major computer company and he worked his butt off to beat his former company at every bid. He did another great job, it is life, move on.

  41. Tundrastruck says: Oct 4, 2009 11:14 AM

It’s easy for douchebag Vikings fans to tell Packers fans to move on because they have never had anything in football….even the best Vikings teams had their asses handed to them when it counted. Green Bay has 12 NFL Championships with 3 Super Bowls among them. Minnesota has nothing…nothing….winless in four tries. Nothing. Zero. Minnesota has never even had a player of Favre’s caliber until now and Favre is not the quarterback he used to be….he’s certainly not the

  42. Hauschild says: Oct 4, 2009 11:18 AM

As much as I hate to admit it – because I am one – but, Packers fans very much resemble gossiping old ladies, with a heaping helping of whining added to the fold. God, the incessant whining begins to wear on a guy.
I actually think Brett gives some sound advice – not that rationality has ever been a trait of an average Packers fan – Let it go!

It’s so laughable looking at you vikings fans..I mean, your team hasn’t won anything, you failed miserably in the 70’s the four times you were in the Super Bowl and you’re thin skinned about it. Hey, I understand.
So now, the Mississippi bumkin comes calling because he thinks he can take you to the promised land to win a championship, which he already did with the Packers. Sounds oh so great and now you’ve chucked all your hatred for a man who beat you all those sundays and are now sucking up to the man because you’ve never won a damn thing.
Bears fans are obnoxious, but at least they’ve won a Super Bowl…what do you Vikings have ANYTHING to brag or boast about? That ONE game you were close with Randy Moss? That one great game in that crappy dome of yours?
Take him…we’ve moved on. This is what he wanted two years because he got it in his head that he was “wronged”…can’t convince his new fans or him otherwise.

Do they want him to win Monday night, no but they wont go as far as some of the haters who want Favre to get hurt. If not for Favre the Packers would have experienced another decade of suckiness, without Favre I doubt very much the Packers would have the new Atrium at Lambeau. Some of these A$$ clowns act as if Favre was responsible for 911. Favre is a football player, it was his only destiny and luckily for Green Bay they got to join in for most of it. As (former) Packer Fan I had my share of moments screaming at the TV or directly at the man when I attended games at Lambeau for doing something boneheaded but that’s were it ended. Also, in another interview Karen Rodgers told the Fans to get on board or Fk off so you tell me who the douche bag is.

  55. jrhsd says: Oct 4, 2009 11:48 AM

Packers fans, let me explain why you are so bitter.
Since the merger in 1970, the Packers have only had four winning seasons without Favre.
    1972: 10-4
    1978: 8-7-1
    1982: 5-3-1
    1989: 10-6
Titletown? What a joke. In the modern era, the Packers have been Favretown. And since Favre has been gone, they returned to a 6-10 season.
Without Favre, the Packers are the worst team since the merger. Why would you want to cry Packer fans?
But the fact is, your team got rid of Favre, it’s not his fault. Blame your GM.

Grow up, Packers fans. Vince Lombardi left for another team and now so has Brett Favre.
Alan Page went to play for the Chicago Bears. Vikings fans didn’t have a cow.
    ===================================
Vince Lombardi didn’t go to a hated division rival.
And Alan Page is a completely different set of circumstances. He didn’t go to the Bears out of spite like Benedict Favre did with the Vikes. He was placed on waivers by the organization and was picked up by Chicago. Had Brett been cut and then picked up by Minny, Packer fans wouldn’t be so pissed at him.
As I correctly stated in a comment that hasn’t come though yet, Brett is exactly where he wanted to be a year ago. His only desire in going to Minny is to seek vengeance against an organization for some perceived slight he invented in his feeble little brain.
Here’s hoping he chokes on it.

Or better yet, where are they going to be when Favre retires (for the last time) and is out of football. They are like NASCAR fans who cheer for an individual. Football is a team sport for most of us, but not for the Favre worshipers. Maybe Drew Brees will pick up a bunch of new fans when these people stumble over to a new superstar to follow after Brett makes his final exit.

This is why I no longer cheer for the Packers after doing so since the early 70’s, this tired out dogma, you’re not a “Real Packer” fan if you cheer for Favre or disagree with management. Blind loyalty is how the holocaust happened.

3-Favre is playing for us just to get back at the Pack. Truth: He wants to play. He wants a good team around him.He wants another title. A fool would think this is all about Packer vengeance. Does he want to spank you ? Hell yah! Just like the 49ers or anyone else he plays this year.

The Packers had 1 winning season in 9 years till he came. And how he won! Even in the Gruden interveiw you could see the small mistake in remembering a play (in an offence supposedly he could teach) which Gruden jumped on (“same now as before”). This is the guilty look, the small boy look in him that no other player has, especially when coupled with the determination and arm of a Hercules. You’re right, those 2 situations are totally different. Lombardi left on his own free will, he just didn’t want to be in Green Bay anymore.
Favre, on the other hand, was forced out by a GM who had been trying to rid himself of Favre for 3 years.
And to Mattmanus, are you really that ignorant to criticize Favre for winning only one Super Bowl? You do know that there are 32 teams, and only one can win the Super Bowl, right? Most QB’s don’t win any, and you’re complaining because Brett “only” won one. So using your logic, Dan Marino must be the worst QB in NFL history, because he played 17 years and never won. Somebody get that bum out of the Hall of Fame.

  82. Vikes-N-Favre says: Oct 4, 2009 3:36 PM

For those of you that say Lombardi didn’t go to a hated division rival, that is very true. However, Favre did wait a full year before joining the Vikings, so the dust should have settled right? However, like usual you GB fans dwell on the past and don’t look towards the future. I would as well if I were you, because the future doesn’t look very bright for GB.
Favre played for NY for one year and allowed the dust to settle before moving on to Minnesota. If I remember correctly, you all said he was washed up and it was time to move on with Rodgers as the QB. Fine, they did that and you people further said that Favre was washed up with how he finished last year, so move the f@ck on already and stop living in the past. If what you are saying is true, wouldn’t you like the fact that the Vikings brought in a old, washed up QB that can’t play anymore? If that was the case, wouldn’t GB be able to run away with the division?
Instead Favre has more passing TDs then Rodgers, has been sacked less, and the only INT Favre has is because Berrian tipped the ball in the air. Otherwise Favre would have 0 INTs right now, and the first time in his career that he went through the first 3 games in a season without a INT.
You all are just jealous because Favre is now having the time of his life playing for the Vikings. Its nice seeing that passion he brings to the team. You know, like running into the endzone and tackling Harvin after throwing him a TD, or being hugged by all his teammates after he threw that beautiful game winning TD pass to Greg Lewis last week.
Here is a thought, don’t worry so much about Favre tomorrow night, and have your team worry more about how they are going to keep the most sacked QB in the NFL upright against the best DL in the NFL. I can’t wait to see Jared Allen and the Williams boys ripping through that pathetic OL of yours like its paper. Maybe EJ Henderson will get a nice shot in as well on Rodgers for good measure.

Alan Page didn’t have to play with the Bears. After he was picked up by them on waivers, he could have refused to play with them because they were “a hated division rival of his former team.”
But he didn’t. And Page helped kickstart a defense that became dominant and culminated in the ’85 Bears.
Vikings fans are not bitter toward Alan Page. Many Vikings no doubt continued to cheer for him when he played as a Bear, except during Vikings games. In fact, many voted for him when he ran for Minnesota Supreme Court justice.
Vikings fans recognized that Page going to Chicago was a personal decision for him, and understood it, and supported him.
The Packers traded Favre and at that moment no longer had the right to tell him where to play or not to play. Then we hear “traitor” and see jerseys burning. This whole thing is pretty overly dramatic on the part of Packers fans.
Yet, through the whole time, Favre has never rejected Packers fans. Even after getting called names, he still hasn’t said one bad thing about Packers fans. Favre has never burned his bridges.
What does that say about you, Packers fans?

  92. koos says: Oct 4, 2009 10:14 PM

I have not seen anybody here that really knows the truth about what happend. None of us actually do know what went on behind the scenes. Farve was not let go without him making that decision himself. He retired and the packers gave him a chance to tryout for his spot as qb. He chose not to. The pack did the next smartest thing and let him go to a team the pack didn’t have to play. This way there wouldn’t be as many hard feelings toward farve. Now he played the retirement card again so he wouldn’t have to go through training camp. He can get away with it why not. I don’t blame farve for moving on good luck brett. The pack had to make a decision and decided rogers was the future. Could Be to early to tell yet.
As for thompson I have to say that I don’t care for the way he is managing the team and I’m not sure they have the right coach for the job yet either. Every body keeps saying that the pack got rid of farve but first he had the option he decided that option wasn’t for him. Farves decision to leave.
As for the viking fans. Good luck with him. He was one of the best to play and maybe still is that will playout through the season. Both packer and viking fans here calling each other names, well that sounds to me like a bunch of little kids. Grow up. This game is no longer a sport it is a business. This is why pack vs. vikes is a monday night game. Ratings. The nfl and the media have to be loving this there is big money in this rival. This is a lot about hype and the media and nfl want this to keep going. I don’t think this was a plan but it sure is playing out well.
I am a die hard packer fan and always will be. This doesn’t mean I have to agree with how and who is managing it.
As for rogers I think he has potential. He needs blocking up front and needs to learn how to control the clock in the 2 minute drills. This will come, he seems smart.
As for farve and viking fans. You got lucky on the final play last week. Yes brett has done this many times in his career but the receiver plays a big part in what brett does. It is still a team that wins. As far as brett being the only reason the packers had winning seasons, well he surely played a big part in it but there was still a team there that helped him. He couldn’t have done it on his own. Vikes have a good team this year and will be tough. Fact. Packers also have a good team a very tough defense and hopefully it will be a good game.
I love this rival and grew up in northern wi so vikes where a bigger rival than bears for me.
Anyway people need to grow up and yes even move on. Good luck vike fans and pack fans. May the best team win.
Oh by the way if the vikes win that doesn’t mean that they are the greatest team ever. Same goes for packs. We will see if history repeats itself or if the vikes can finally finish a season without falling apart. This isn’t a bash it just a fact. I hope the pack wax the vikes but if they don’t i’ll only be upset for a day or so not going to be bitter for the rest of my life. It is just a game by the way. I have more important things to worry about in life than what the pack or the vikes do including brett.

As I recall, from the first rumblings of Brett

(see Favres comments when Randy was up for grabs)So after crying Wolfe for 6 yrs he finally decides to retire when his buddy gets a job in Minnisota. “Thinking Ted would be dumb enough to let him go there” His premeditated plan runs afoul and off to New York he goes knowing good and well where he would be in “09” This type of character never comes out on top! “I wanted to stick to Ted Thompson and the Packers” a direct quote from Favre. Who needs to move on??? I have nothing but respect for Ted thompson. Unlike the Viking organization, Ted refused to let an egomaniac run the Packer organization. How desperate are the Vikings to let him come into town without attending any mini camps or training camp? Let me clue you in on something I learned when I was a child. When you do something out of spite, it never turns out well. Favre can lie through his teeth until he finally retires, but playing for the Vikings is for no other reason than to get revenge on the Packers. And the Vikings organization and fans are buying into it. The more Favre speaks the more ignorant he looks. Nothing can take back the years and what he did for the Packers, but right now he is a frickin head case. You Viking fans are high on him now because he’s winning wait until he loses some games and championships for you. The Favre merchandise will fly just as fast as it did when you blew the playoff game when you were 15-1. I remember the scene well. Viking merchandise being thrown out to the parking lot of the dumb stadium. Favre will be no different when he loses.
This is one Packer fan that is over Brett Favre. He is a classless vindictive man and we are well rid of him. I’ll take Rodgers any day of the week.

    ====================================
You make it sound like Brett had a say in the matter. He didn’t. He had no choice but to either play for the Jets, play for someone else not in our division or stay retired. Had he been traded to anyone else in our division, the Jets would have paid for it quite heavily with draft picks.
So his “allowing a year for the dust to settle” wasn’t by choice.

  97. SpartaChris says: Oct 5, 2009 1:27 AM

    @Leatherneck-
So Page should have simply retired rather than play for the team who picked him up off waivers?
This isn’t the same comparison man. You’re comparing apples to anvils. Page didn’t retire and then string the Vikings along for months right up until after training camp started.
It would be different if Green Bay had simply cut Brett and he wound up landing with the Vikes. Of course we wouldn’t like it, but you wouldn’t see nearly as much animosity towards the guy.
Instead he retired. He said, “I don’t want to play any more.” Then he changed his mind for the thousandth time and put the Packers in a pickle where their only option was to trade him or cut him. Brett forced the issue, not the Packers. And he joined the Vikings not out of love for the game, but out of spite.

Without Brett Favre the Packers wouldn’t exist.
If your company told you you were no longer wanted and fired you. And then your old companies big rival BEGGED you to come and work for them I GUARANTEE every single one of you inbred hillbillys would do the same thing. So shut your mouths and when Brett sticks it to you tomorrow night shut the hell up.

I think its dumb that some of you solely blame Ted Thompson for this. He did ask Favre to come back after he had initially retired, but Favre changed his mind and retired again. The Packers had to move on at that point, and started to cater their offense around Aaron Rodgers.
Also Aaron Rodgers is a very good quarterback, I wish some Packer fans would realize that, instead of just ripping on him becuase hes not Brett Favre. You honestly can’t blame all of last season on him, when the defense blew numerous leads at the end of games.
Also Viking fans again are showing their true class on here, its not like I would expect anything different though. Just funny to see them worship a guy they used to always say was washed up and overrated.

This right here is why I USED to be a Packer fan. Since this debacle started I have seen Packer fans for what they truly are. A bunch of unloyal, crying, hicks. I’m embarrased I ever rooted for this team.
    _____________________________
How are Packer fans unloyal? Just becuase they have a hard time seeing a qb play for a division rival? You are the unloyal one if you would stop liking the team because of one player. Packer fans are loyal this is why it is bothering them so much to see him with a division rival.

“Without Brett Favre the Packers wouldn’t exist. ”
What a load of you-know-what. People like YOU are what I am getting sick of. “Brett Favre did this, Brett Favre did that, blah blah blah…”
What about what the Packers did for Favre? He was a joke in Atlanta before they traded for him; a drunken fool well on his way to wasting that amazing talent. Then after trading for him, the Packers surrounded Favre with one of the finest coaching staffs ever assembled, several of whom went on to be head coaches elsewhere in the NFL. The Packers showed great patience in his early mistake-prone seasons, when by all rights they could have easily pulled him in favor of one of the many talented backups that have gone through Green Bay behind Favre (Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer, Aaron Brooks, etc). Ever seen that clip of Mike Holmgren calling to one of his coaches to pull Favre, then change his mind? Favre was given a level of patience from Holmgren that few coaches in this league would have granted.
Eventually the coaching staff was able to harness that incredible talent and turn Favre into the star that he became.
Then, later in his career, the franchise put off its off-season plans for each of 3 years until Brett made up his mind – showing Favre a level of respect that few, if any, players have ever received. The entire franchise was put on hold, waiting for Brett to make up his mind.
Brett Favre made the Packers? Ha Ha Ha, ROFL – the Green Bay Packers made Brett Favre! Where would Favre be without the Packers? Probably out of football ten years already, a drunken has been having wasted that amazing talent.
And how does he re-pay the franchise that made him what he is? By signing with its most bitter and hated rival, all over a petty squabble with management that had finally had enough of his antics.
Believe me, I’d love to let it go; I just wish he’d do the same and MOVE on….

If Favre is sooo washed up-then who cares that he’s playing for the Vikings, right Packer fans?? He’s washed up?! He has proved that he’s washed up with 0.08 seconds to go in the game. He’s proved that he’s a nothing by throwing for 300 yards when MN’s running game was stopped. He’s proved that he’s washed up by not throwing an interception yet this season. Look; He’s not the 1997 Brett Favre, but he’s steady, reliable, and the missing link in a long awaited Minnesota Superbowl trip.
I was born and raised in GB. Moved to MN in 2000, and remained a Packer fan. This is my first year as a Viking fan, and I hope Favre much success. I am embarrassed by all the hatred and ill-will towards someone who gave so much to GB. It’s football people. It’s a game.
