Suspended free agents become available

Once upon a time, a suspended player could serve the suspension only if on a roster. At some point since the career of receiver Andre Rison ended in large part because no one wanted to sign Rison and then send him away for a month, the league changed course, allowing players to serve suspensions even if they are not employed.

And so, with the completion of Week Four, several suspended players are eligible to sign with new teams.

Per a league source, the newly-available players are linebacker Roderick Green, defensive end Brent Hawkins, linebacker Vince Redd, nose tackle Shaun Smith, and defensive back Daren Stone.

Also, running back Cory Boyd is back like cooked crack.

Running back Deuce McAllister would have been reinstated today, if he had opted not to continue to fight the StarCaps suspension that still might be imposed on him at some point in the future. So even though he hasn’t been suspended, McAllister could have removed the StarCaps cloud from himself completely by taking his medicine (something without Bumetanide) and then trying to move on.

In all fairness, the league should credit McAllister for the suspension, even though he chose not to take it over the first month of the season.
