I think the Jets gave Crabtree the heads up that they were going to trade for Edwards. You know a deal for Edwards didn’t happen in one day. I wouldn’t be shocked to find out the Jets gave Parker the nudge that they would be trading for Edwards so he could get Crabtree signed beofre the Niners really realized they had him by the short hiars.

There is not much to explain. The trade deadline for unsigned rookies passed Aug 14. Any rookie not signed by that date cannot be traded prior to Mar 5. Obviously, that applies to draft picks only, not to undrafted rookies.

Your impression does not match the actual rule. If the 49ers wanted to trade Crabtree now (they don’t) they are not allowed to. That has nothing to do with salary cap implications. It’s because of that trade deadline.

It actually strengthens the league’s case against the Jets because it shows how desperate they were to get a WR. Of course the tampered with Crabtree. When that failed, they went after the best douchebag available.

I think there would be an insane salary cap hit for San Francisco if they were to trade Crabtree after signing him, as the bonus would be accelerated.

the most interesting thing about the trade is that the Jets continue to fleece the Browns. This is essentially Edwards for Stuckey and a couple of mid round picks since the Jets would dump Trusnick with Calvin Pace being activated. I think Mangini still works for Tannenbaum!

RedGoneWILD, I think in baseball, teams can’t trade players signed that season (or at least, only have a certain window)…..I believe it’s to keep teams from stockpiling Free Agents, and then dealing them during the season when other teams have needs arise.
The NFL may have a similar rule about dealing recently signed players, and a rookie could, conceivably, fall under that rule.
Just a thought.

once the 49ers signed Crabtree, they could trade him to any team right? I’ve been under the impression that this deadline only applied while he was an unsigned drafted player…please explain
