Former Pro Bowlers or Pro Bowl alternates:
Larry Fitzgerald
Anquan Boldin
Steve Smith - NYG
Roddy White
T.J. Houshmandzadeh - 2 years ago
Calvin Johnson - alternate last year
Pro Bowl pre-season favorites:
Greg Jennings
Pro Bowl threatening in 2 or 3 years:
Steve Smith - NYG
Hakeem Nicks
- This one can be argued, but it won't be hard to see one of these guys in the Pro Bowl soon, due to the QB and the media market.
That leaves Johnny Knox, Percy Harvin and DeSean Jackson. Why would they take a spot away from Crabtree? Because they're RETURNERS. These three basically prevent Crabtree from sneaking into a Pro Bowl berth by playing KR in SF (by taking Allen Rossum's job).
I hope this explains why that list of people is going to clog up Crabtree's chances at a Pro Bowl in the next 3 years.

I agree with all those that said that the rookie salary structure needs to be restructured. I have a problem with anyone getting all these millions and haven't set foot on a professional playing field. These holdouts only hurt the player from gaining the exposure and experience of playing a the professional level. This is true in any sport but probably is more prevelant in football since just the speed of the game is twice a fast as in college. Crab did himselp a deservice by holding out and his agent should be shot (even though he'll get his money regardless of the players success or not). You think he would have learned from the problems that quarterback in Oakland is experiencing even today from his holdout days but I guess this generation's motto is pay me now and I'll worry about the future later, which probably will be short-lived. I'm sure the DB's and veteran safety from the other teams will do what they can to see that he receives is just due the first time he catches on across the middle in a real game. I think he needs to find an agent that has his best interest at heart whose motivate goes beyond the money. If he plays to the level expected by so many..eventually he'll get paid. Now he is has a target, so we'll see how well he can take a hit(s) an he will earn all those millions through pain and suffering. What happen to the concept of a team player? Whose team is he on?

I have a lot of respect for the San Fransisco 49ers for not trying to punish Crabtree by lowering the deal. Though, I believe this is a situation where the 49ers would have been justified, they showed a lot of class by not doing so. Contrast that to the Lakers who penalized Odom for volunteering to take only a 29% pay cut this year instead of the 36% they wanted to give him. They ended up giving him a 43% paycut when they reentered negotiations.
I truly believe that a lot of the holdout issues and contract disputes are the fault of the owners and management not taking a proactive approach to contract renegotiations. If the Arizona Cardinals had gone up to Boldin last year and said, "we see you out performed your contract last year, and we would like to reward you", they would probably have been able to pay him much less than he was asking for, and had a happy receiver instead of the circus they had instead. If our employers treated us like most professional sports organizations treated their players, we would walk out. I know I would.
And I don't want to hear about how much money these guys make and they should just deal with it. I make a nice chunk of change, but I am not about to be taken advantage of by my company. I am responsible for making the company a significant amount of it's revenue (I maintain and develop the system that customers purchase our products from and our users sell with). NFL players generate a lot of revenue, and they should be compensated accordingly. Everyone thinks Favre should retire after 19 years in the business. They thought he should have retired two seasons ago. At 19 years doing what I do, I will still be working, and probably about 10 years away from retirement. The average career in the NFL is 3.5 seasons. Players need to make sure that they have themselves covered. I have no problem with them asking for large contracts. They risk serious bodily hard every time they step on the field; they should be compensated.

I love this contract. The best part about it is the "discretionary salary advance" clause. Basically that is a "prevent offense" by the Niner brass to insure that if his Crybaby ways return and Parker raises his snake head to ask for more money...essentially, the Niners included a clause that will make Parker & Crybaby forfeit the bonus. All rookies should have this clause as mandatory if we can't have a rookie salary cap before 2011. But with Parkers intellectual analysis, he will tell Crybaby that they will forfeit the bonus for more money on a new contract. Crybaby better get rid of Parker...your agent is supposed to make you money. He already lost $1M in playing time, he cannot reach the majority of bonuses unless some miracle happens, and he cannot ask for a new contract without losing money first. Plus the overall contract is of less value than the one offered in the first place. So all I see is that Parker cost his client million$. Parker should have done this contract for free.

And you don't think he can play in 80% of his offensive plays for 2 years? He'll be gone after 5 years - bank it. You really think Hakeem Nicks, Johnny Knox, Roddy White, and Greg Jennings are going to keep him from the Pro Bowl for 3 straight years? LOL.
===
Read the article a little more closely. He has to make AT LEAST one Pro Bowl. If he is not selected to any Pro Bowls, he will not be able to void the deal regardless. Remember this: this is a conference with Anquan Boldin, Desean Jackson, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, both Steve Smiths, and several other top quality receivers. That will be tough, especially with Hill as his QB.
Secondly if he makes exactly one Pro Bowl, he has to participate in 80% of the offensive snaps WHEN THE TEAM MAKES THE PLAYOFFS. If San Fran doesn't make the playoffs at all over the next few years, it doesn't matter if he is in 100% of the offensive snaps, it still won't count towards voiding the end of the deal.
So this is definitely a scenario where it's possible, but just barely he'll be able to knock off the last year.

He gets $17,000,000.00 guaranteed....and he's done absolutely nothing to earn it. As far as I'm concerned no rookie should get any guaranteed up front money. They should prove themselves and EARN their pay rate based on merit.
Of course to the union the word MERIT is evil while at the same time the sleazy agents are completely devoid of all such rational thought that doesn't mean more more more.
With all that said...I'm glad these greedy bastards could weasel more money than the slotting position calls for.
At this point I hope the kid does well. I'd like to see him actually EARN his money.

"Meanwhile, the deal falls well short of the mark for which Crabtree and agent Eugene Parker were aiming -- the five-year, $38.25 million contract paid by the Raiders to receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the seventh overall pick in the draft."
--------------
You made an error above...it should read "$38.25 million MISTAKE paid by the Raiders".
Crabtree could get a career ending injury tomorrow and the 49ers could hold their heads higher than that mess happening across the bay.
Of course Alex Smith is a bust, but there are many at QB over the years (*ahem* Jamarcus *ahem*). Vernon has turned around and the other new Niner recruits are doing fine both character and play.
Personally I see no shame in the contract negotiated by the 49ers and I am very happy with the outcome. Let's now see if Crabtree is 1) hurt, 2) going to be the next TO, 3) going to go all Rashaun Woods, etc. He wouldn't be the first and not the last, but hopefully he turns into the next Anquan or Larry or better yet Andre Johnson (though I think that's a reach).

Crabtree got crap, compared to what he originally wanted. Keep in mind he thoought he would be a top 3-5 pick. And he got nowhere near that cash.
Parker flubbed this one big time.
That guy will be knocking on doors selling comedy tickets with another "fiasco" like that.
I agree Crabtree will not get into the Pro-Bowl anytime soon, but not because of that list but because other players will not be voting for that guy, for another 3-4 years tops.

So if Crabtree plays Sunday does this make all the OTA's and training camp kinda a "over kill".
If he is healthy and of course not taking any hits since last season this is a great early season pick up for the 49'ers.
I would be very concerned about consistent QB play but from the ashes of Eddie's forced leave the niners have a nice future especially playing in the NFC West.

Steve says: October 7, 2009 3:58 PM

LOL! Yes, I did get my numbers wrong on Bey's contract in the above post. He's still got higher numbers than Florio screamed about for 2 days, and got away with not getting a late penalty which Florio nearly promised for the past 2 weeks. Also, from my perspective, he did do better than the #9.
However, in honor of the 49ers becoming a legit playoff contender today, I will end my ranting, and leave you with this rap haiku:
Parker? Not MY name.
Told you homeboy, Can't touch this
Now - stop! Hammer time

Italian Army Homo is seriously slow. He has no clue what he is saying. The 49ers won big time on this contract. And ItalianArmyHomo...it is a 6 YEAR DEAL so that means the numbers are divided over 6 YEARS...not 5 years. Wow...it is amazing how retarded one can be.
$17 million in guaranteed money over 6 years! That is still less than Raji will get over 5 years.
Have I mentioned already that ItalianArmyHomo is retarded? It is highly unlikely, but more probable than ItalianArmyHomo gets a brain from the Wizard, that he Crabtree gets to see the full $32.5 million. No way on that.
ItalianArmyHomo and Eugene Parker and MC Hammer make a great negotiating team.

Johnny Knox? Hakeem Nicks? Percy Harvin? You've officially lost it. Harvin is a kick returner with average receiving skills for a rookie. Knox is ok... I dont think ItalianArmyGuy understands how to read the numbers.

italianarmyguy,
Read before you post.
The best Crabtree can hope for is that he plays well enough to void the deal to 5 years and 28 Mill. That's only 4 and a half mill more than Raji ahead of him while Raji has easier incentives in which to earn more than Crabtree, and the only way he does that is if he plays well enough to go to the probowl a couple of times. If that were to happen, then I'm sure the 49ers would have no problem paying that extra 4.5 mill. Realistically, that ain't gonna happen though, so this is going to be a 6 year deal worth 32 mill with 17 mill guaranteed. Contrast that with the fact he had a deal on the table that would've been 5 years and 16 mill guaranteed, and you see that Crabtree not only caved, he got shafted for an extra season that is likely to happen.
It was a stupid holdout that didn't net him anything other than a rep of being a jackass and a 6th year that wouldn't have been added had he come to camp on time. Kid is an idiot.
