The San Francisco 49ers officially have announced that receiver Michael Crabtree, the tenth overall pick in the 2009 draft, has agreed to terms.
Crabtree will meet the media at 2:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
The 49ers likely will receive a short-term roster exemption — probably two weeks — which will allow Crabtree to practice with the team without forcing the 49ers to reduce the roster size by one.
After playing the Falcons this weekend, the 49ers are off October 18. They return to action October 25, at Houston.
Sorry, I feel the 49ers lost on this deal. If they’re paying him the same money that was offered in July, then they’re paying someone for nearly 3 months of critical work that never happened.
Florio keeps hammering that Crabtree was the loser in this stand-off. But I just don’t see it. He got a free, 3-month vacation.
None of this is to say that Crabtree’s holdout wasn’t harmful to his longterm development and legacy. It was. But that’s not the point. The point is the 49ers should’ve taken money off the table because they’re essentially paying a high draft pick for a wasted year.
I’m afraid things just got a little bit tougher for us other NFC teams. 49er’s D tough and with Crabtree joining Davis and Gore under a no-nonsense coach? Could be a pretty tough team if Crabtree lives up to the hype.
BOOOOO! I wanted to see this guy go in later rounds of the draft next year. This just hit Eugene Parkers credibility BIG TIME. Who the hell is going to listen to him from now on?
How do they determine when and to whom they award roster exemptions? Is this completely up to the discretion of the commish, or are there guidelines?
don’t look now.
but I think the 49ers are trying to get good again.
The real loser in this is everybody but Peter King, who doesn’t have to change his name to Peter Jeter as Crabtree will not be re-entering the draft next year.
DeVoodoo,
I think you’re mistaken. By all accounts, had Crabtree signed in July it would have been a FIVE year deal.
As a result of his holding out, a SIXTH year was added. People can say all they want, but this year will be difficult to remove by Crabtree (he must hit very high performance incentives within two years), and is a very small year in terms of compensation (only 4 million).
So essentially we used his holdout as leverage to add a year to his contract.
I’ll tell you what sucks about this whole thing : Some player who has been through camp, Preseason and the first four weeks of the regular season is going to get whacked so this prima donna jackass who has yet to do shit can waltz right in . This stinks to high heaven. I feel bad for whoever gets the axe so this jackass could get signed. So much for hard work and playing by the rules paying off huh ???
Kenneth,
You make a good point. My guess is that whoever it is will have a short vacation. Given the recent propensity of holdouts to get injured quickly or not perform, I think that Crabby will get sent to IR soon and that person will be back on the roster.
Worst case Crabby gets the Robert Meachem treatment and has to deal with getting paid millions of dollars to watch his team play, while he sits on the bench. Which, mind you, is far worse than watching them on TV and getting paid nothing.
Florio, perhaps you can answer this: If Crabby does get the Meachem, do the 49ers still have to give up a roster spot?
Respect to the 9ers for sticking to their guns. Now I hope Singletary has the good sense to lay down the law and bench him for 3-4 games, and I hope this FINALLY results in a rookie pay scale.
