Pick acquired for Edwards could escalate to second-rounder

The Browns have considered trading Braylon Edwards since the day Eric Mangini took over.  Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer says, in fact, they planned to trade Edwards earlier before Donte Stallworth killed a pedestrian while drunk driving, ending Stallworth’s season.

But that incident caused the Browns to keep Edwards heading into 2009, and Cabot lays out many quality reasons that Cleveland’s delay ultimately cost them.

We can’t argue with that, but we would argue that they received a good haul for Edwards considering the present circumstances.

The third-round pick Cleveland traded for can escalate to a second-round pick if Edwards gets a certain number of receptions, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and the New York Daily News.  (It can’t move to a fourth-rounder no matter how passes Edwards drops.)

The number of receptions Edwards must catch is reportedly high and unlikely to be achieved, so the most likely return for Edwards is still a third and fifth-round pick, in addition to Chansi Stuckey and Jason Trusnik.

Considering the time of the deal, Edwards’ lack of production, and pain-in-the-Mangini factor, the Browns did fairly well.  Stuckey might be the second best receiver on the Browns at the moment, and Trusnik will be a core special teams player.

And the Browns need all the draft picks they can get for a future that wasn’t going to include Edwards for very long anyway.

Cabot also was on national radio and predicted the Browns would go 10-6 before the season started. She’s clueless.

  2. buckifan4life says: Oct 7, 2009 1:59 PM

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Mangin and co. made a great trade. Braylon is a phenominal under performer. I like it!

As a critic of Mangini, I have to say that this trade looks like a good one for the Browns.

it just doesn’t matter, the jets make a bad pick.

  5. JazzJet says: Oct 7, 2009 2:10 PM

Under performer, problem child, yes. But Ryan faced him twice yearly when DC for the Ravens. Evidently, he believes he can turn Mr. Edwards around. So, I like the deal. (Jet season tix holder for longer than I care to remember).

Pretty sweet deal for a guy who has 12 games left on his contract and wants to be overpaid next year. The Jets are retarded.

  7. AzCajunDawg says: Oct 7, 2009 2:23 PM

Your are a retard if you think Mangin made a good trade. The Jets made a good trade for they made the Browns Clown coach agree to a trade were the number of receptions Edwards must catch is reportedly high and unlikely to be achieved, so the most likely return for Edwards is still a third and fifth-round pick. Smart Jets. In addition, the Gaints were also reportedly interested. I trust both of these two organization judgement on talent anyday over this current ownership and coach. Just look back a couple of months at the Winslow trade and nothing also in trade or draft. Season over, another 5 year rebuild. And Mangini won’t even be here, most likely back in New York.

  8. Youngone says: Oct 7, 2009 2:27 PM

Browns shouldve traded him to giants way back before he started the season. I’m sure his value has only dropped

  9. rodstiffington says: Oct 7, 2009 2:30 PM

If the Browns get a 2nd rounder for this bust, they will have shoved their ManKok up NY collective ass…

is it possible tannenbaum is getting rid of picks before the league can take them away for cheating again? what happens if they dont have any picks?

  11. nato2424 says: Oct 7, 2009 2:47 PM

mangini is tearin this team apart he is not a good coach he just got lucky with a good roster in new york.

  12. Kiss Bills Rings says: Oct 7, 2009 2:47 PM

Wouldn’t Braylon first have to catch a ball in order for that pick to escalate….yup, it stays a 3rd rounder!!!!

  13. rockotica says: Oct 7, 2009 3:03 PM

add in that CLE doesnt have to spend $ on his contract and that the Jets will prob sign him to a ridiculous one next off season, CLE comes out on top here.

  14. Youngone says: Oct 7, 2009 3:21 PM

Its funny Herm Edwards on ESPN was praising the move while ESPN showed nothing but Braylon Edwards drops. Wonder what NFL Live will have to say about how this trade affects Brett Favre. ESPN is horrible news, its like the E! news of Football

  15. Gregg Rosenthal says: Oct 7, 2009 3:21 PM

I should have said in post, but I think it was a good trade for both teams. Those trades exist.
But it was a safe, no-brainer for the Browns.

  16. RK says: Oct 7, 2009 3:22 PM

Braylon will probably have a good Monday night. He won’t know enough of the playbook to have to think about anything and the Dolphins haven’t seen him enough to know that the best way to defend him is to leave him wide open. Plus he’s got a history of playing good on Monday nights (ie. Browns v. Gints in ’08).
But have no fear Jets fan. There’s no way he catches enough balls for that pick to escalate. He’s still going to have to spend his Sundays practicing his volleyball skills anytime he’s open and a football gets thrown directly at him.

Jazzjet feels that Ryan feels he can turn Edwards around??
I guess based on the success he has had turning Vernon Gholston around as we heard all summer.
Can’t wait to see the Jests in Foxboro in November!!

“the Browns were planning to trade Edwards until fellow receiver Donte Stallworth drove drunk and killed a pedestrian, ultimately ending his season.”
And ultimately ending that person’s life.

  19. goJags says: Oct 7, 2009 3:29 PM

If they keep making these kinda deals b/w the browns and the jets, the cleveland team could soon be called Cleveland Jets-2008.

  20. tv says: Oct 7, 2009 3:32 PM

The likelihood that Edwards will get a high number of receptions is about the same as I have of having big monkeys jump out of my ass.

  21. Youngone says: Oct 7, 2009 3:57 PM

I’d have Sanchez throw WR screens all day so I can get a better pick

  22. JeterLeto says: Oct 7, 2009 4:16 PM

Mangini sucks worst coach ever is said a lot. 4 games in and he blows apparently. IMO id say he has made some good calls getting rid of winslow and passing crabtree up. He wants to build a team around people that want to play football for the game not the paycheck. Why pay millions to a reciever like edwards to only have him drop passes and suck at running routes at times? There are plenty of FA recievers out there that just wanna play the sport. Give Mangini til next year to see if he can build the team around what he wants. Make this season at least interesting and keep the team competing. Make other teams work their asses off to get the win even if we dont.

A good trade for both teams. Trusnik and draft picks helps the Browns and Edwards even if he catches zero balls is an upgrade over stuckey. His size and vertical threat simply make the Jets O better when he is on the field. Which should help keller, Cotchery and Jones. Now he could be a liability by dropping passes but no worse than Stuckey, Smith and Clowney have been. There is of course an upside here. In 2007 he was a top 5 Wr if he can get his head together he could be a star again and the Jets could be transformed into SB contenders. But the first rule of being a Jet fan is what can go wrong will go wrong. Edwards has great potential for going wrong. But regardless he is an upgrade even if the Jets will be drafting a WR w/ their 1st next year. Gonzalez to the Falcons is the kind of steal we will never get. But regardless Edwards makes us better.

Big difference here, Edwards has actually shown that he has probowl ability (2007 season). Gholston was a bust the moment he got to training camp.
I think this trade is good for both teams. Edwards obviously wasn’t going to do anything in Cleveland this season and was a distraction. The Jets need someone to stretch the field for their running game (this will also help Keller get open underneath). The Browns still look kind of dumb though because they could’ve made this trade before the season for a 2nd round pick that had the possibility of escalating to a 1st rounder. Jets aren’t really giving up much either, Mangenius just loves all our 2nd-rate players.

The Giants did not take him because they are not into ego freaks
they got rid of all the trash Tiki, Shocky and PLex why would they saddle themself with a head case who was in a bar fight the other day
I think the Jets made a major error the kid does not need some hot headed ahole as a WR
Find a young guy and teach him let him learn along with your QB and you will have a great pair right now you have what could be a great QB and an Ahole at WR

  27. bluelion says: Oct 7, 2009 6:06 PM

Any coincidence that the Jets complete a trade for Edwards on the same day that Crabtree is no longer an option for their tampering arses?
    No, I didn’t think so, either ;-)

You make a great point, except for that whole Antonio Pierce being an accessory to a crime and not being reprimanded in the slightest by the g-men. I know he wasn’t convicted, but no one out there doubts the fact he took Plax’s gun after a crime was committed, crossed state lines, and tried to hide it. Even without a conviction the NFL has shown they will still discipline players. If the G-men cared so much about ‘character’ they would’ve done something here. But all the G-men are saints, right?

Good for Braylon, leaving the mess in Clevealand for a first place team , a team with a future

  30. Lost says: Oct 8, 2009 1:30 AM

Nonsense. This is a very good trade for Jet.
A 3rd rounder and some 2nd day stuff for a 1st round, former Pro Bowler. Come on.
Braylon has issues – no question. But the Brown get very little for a gifted player with proven potential.

  31. texasPHINSfan says: Oct 8, 2009 12:06 PM

browns got the better end of the trade here. the fact is braylon could possibly no longer be on their team anymore when the browns are using those picks in the draft next year.
jets overpaid for a player that will be a FA next year….. brilliant.
Stuckey will give the browns more yards this year than braylon would have – he “checked out” a long time ago.
