Nice twisted summary. Rush laid out his reasoning in considerably more detail, along with pointing out how Powell carefully timed his announcement when, if it were actually on principle, he would have made it much sooner. And he specifically went through the reasons Powell cited and showed how they failed to show water. (You may agree or not, but he didn't simply make an assertion with no evidence.) As for Bush - though this goes way off-track- he never "threw Powell under the bus" as you claim. Indeed, Bush as usual showed remarkable respect and class in his response after Powell left the cabinet (well maybe not so remarkable, since Bush regularly refused to do what he could easily have done and publicly go after many critics, including those former administration officials who attacked him.) (The whole UN thing is a bit too much to sort out here, but if you read up on the various players you'll find that Powell did not do very much to present parts of the case vs. Iraq many in the administration were urging,most of which were very well-founded. But in any case, your case vs. Bush here is based on the "Bush lied" meme, which is, in fact, one of those Dem lies repeated so often people believe it now without ever checking on what he actually did & didn't say.) As for "throwing under the bus" - funny that you missed how Powell & his right-hand man (the one who actually first mentioned Valerie Plame's supposedly covert CIA status) threw Libby under the bus, rather than coming out with the truth.

Hey, Rush isn’t a racist, he just said that “The Media” had a vested interest in Donovan McNabb doing well because he’s black, and that he recieved way too much credit for the success of his team! How could that possibly be construed as racist?
Never mind that McNabb is a five time Pro Bowler who led the Eagles to four consecutive NFC East division championships, five NFC Championship Games, and a Super Bowl. So obviously “The Media” would think he’s great only because he’s black. Sweet Jesus.
Rush also said that Colin Powell backed Obama because they’re both black. What could be racist about that? Never mind that Bush threw Powell under the bus after Powell burned his credibility presenting a b.s. case for war to the UN. So he obviously couldn’t have any legitimate reason for breaking from the Repubs.
And if the above statements don’t make Rush a racist, they definitely make him an @sshole. “Oooh, I’m so edgy and controversial with my outrageous statements! Hey, why are people mad?” Freedom of speech is also freedom to be an @sshole, I get that, but it doesn’t make Rush any less of one. And personally, I don’t find that to be an admirable trait.

It’s a fact that American schoolchildren got into fights during the Bush Administration. It’s a fact that black kids sometimes beat up white kids and vice versa and other kids cheered. It’s a fact that Mr. Limbaugh did not go on the air and proclaim it a result of the racist climate created by our white President, Mr. Bush. It’s a fact that he has gone on the air and proclaimed these incidents–that were happening when I was in school–the result of having a bi-racial President. It’s a fact that he’s called President Obama racist with no evidence to back up the claim, conveniently forgetting that President Obama is not black. He is biracial and was raised by a white mother and white grandparents.
As I’ve said, I do not know if Mr. Limbaugh is racist. I only know that he is using his forum to race-bait. If you can’t see that, it’s because you don’t want to see that.

Oh, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE! When you come late to a party, at least mingle and listen a bit before jumping into the conversation (meaning scan the whole thread before posting). Several of us HAVE posted examples. I don’t know if he’s racist or just ratings hungry (this morning I heard a preview of an upcoming NBC interview where he indicated he does almost everything for ratings). But he definitely does A LOT of race-baiting on his show–and yes, I have listened to him myself.

Right on. Southern Libs were instrumental in fighting for Civil Rights, and it’s a shame what the Rush Limbaugh/Glenn Beck crowd has done to marginalize the thinking people of the South. Sometimes, out of anger, you use a broad brush. Both sides are guilty of this (I especially love the “liberals are weaklings” line – since you’ve got to figure most NFL players are liberal and would mop the floor with any of the posters here)

Rush Limbaugh listeners can’t be argued with. Rush hasn’t told them how to think about the issues you’ve raised.
I didn’t notice if you brought up Public Schools. I know the new breed of conservatives don’t care much for education (because an educated person canprocess independent thought – that doesn’t make for an easy vote/good Wal-Mart customer) but paying for the education of children that aren’t yours – socialism!
Not to mention anything we do for Veterans. VA hospitals and benefits? Socialism!

Absolutely true, but that was not debate I was having. I was talking about people speaking in absolutes. My fault if I did not make that clear.

I apologize. I meant to specify IF you were hooked up to a sewer system – which is run by the State. Yes, a septic tank is, in fact, a private transaction between the homeowner and the company that he/she hired. Again, I apologize for not making that point clear. As a city resident, I do not even have the option of having a septic tank. My mistake.

I don’t know where to begin…
If Rush buys any team, there will be NO ONE who says no to working for him. Just pay me. Player, coach, Football operations, ect … doesn’t matter.
He is a perfect example of a GREAT American…. FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!! whether you agree or disagree. That is what makes AMERICA great. Also, if he can afford it, again, this is what makes AMERICA great. He LOVES football, so buy a team!!!!
The NFL has gone out of their way to be unracist, so much so, there is know reverse discrimminations going on. Instead of going on creditials it is on age and race….. The NFL is denying many guys (and girls) that have earned thier way and passing them by.
Again even if the UFL doesn’t work…. Thank GOD we are in AMERICA, just to try it out.

Limbaugh is a racist and I don’t see why NFL players would want to play in St. Louis if he were the owner. I’m a Jag fan and I would quit watching them if he bought the team from Wayne Weaver.
That said, it’s a free country and if St. Louis and the NFL wants a racist owner, it’s their choice.

Im a lideral and unlike most conservatives I can listen to both sides of a debate and form my own conclusion.

The interstate highway system was implemented by Eisenhower. However its chief purpose was military infrastructure. It was not a socialist program. By your definition the Military is socialist program because tax payer dollars fund it. What then in gov’t is not funded by tax payer dollars.
Secondly, not differentiating between state and federal administration is exactly the point when it comes to conservatism. What we’re talking about is the role of the FEDERAL gov’t, not the role government. And if you ever lived on a private street you would know that municipalities do not provide sewage removal, but only private companies dealing with septic tanks.

Actually, I stated that the working definition of socialism for this conversation was government control and/or administration. It does not distinguish between federal and state since in either case, it is not privately owned. Also, you may want to check where the money came from. The Interstate Highway system was constructed with Federal dollars under the Eisenhower (Republican) Administration. The point is, you cannot claim to be 100% anti-socialism when, in fact, daily life in America depends on many things being socialized. For the record, I have been a registered independent since I was 18. I am NOT a socialist. I just find it very disingenuous when people run around screaming “socialism” when many aspects of our lives have been socialized and it has often occurred under Republican administrations. I think the Interstate Highway system is great and Eisenhower doesn’t get nearly enough credit for having the vision and will power to get it built. But, strictly speaking, it was and is a socialist program. I am merely pointing out that when zealots like Rush and chapnasty speak in absolutes, they are wrong and are being hypocritical. Finally, for the record, I’m all for Rush buying the Rams. If he has the cash, which he does, there is no reason why he can’t be an owner. His views should have no bearing on whether or not he can a football team. Anyone who does not care for his views, is welcome to root for any other team they so choose and boycott anything Ram related. I think he will bring a lot entertainment value to NFL ownership. He really can’t be more abrasive and outlandish than Jones or Snyder.

Lastly, and most importantly, although we disagree on how we get there I think that we both agree on the outcome. I wish your friend nothing but good health. Pre-existing conditions is a great example of proper reform.

I agree with most of your points but the rightwingers have nailed it on tolerance. It’s discouraging when “liberals” slam Southerners with stereotypes. Whether it’s a “red” or “blue” state, nearly half the people vote the other way. Plenty of New Yorkers love Rush and plenty of Southerners despise him. Southern liberals fought the battle for civil rights while arrogant Yanks were still sitting in segregated classrooms. So it’s time they got off their high horse and quit taking swipes at us.

Yeah, I listen to his show occasionally because I actually give a fair hearing to people whose views are different from mine. (You might try it sometime.) Anyone can become addicted to painkillers and I’d never judge him harshly for that (as he has so many others). But his recent racial comments have been shocking. If he’s not not racist, then he’s engaging in calculated race-baiting to stir up dissent and increase his ratings. That’s worse.
But that said, I’m not sure any of this discussion is relevant to team ownership. Is there a stipulation that NFL owners have to be good people with majority-approved political views?

Well, you could start by answering my questions which you dodged. Now, let’s address your points;
I have read the Constitution numerous times. It is a great document that is open to interpretation based on how emphasize and interpert the wording. Gun advocates emphasize “right of the people to keep and bear Arms”. Anti-gun emphasize “A well regulated Militia”. However, what is not open to interpretation is how you define socialism. You and Rush are quite clear about that. Under your definition, which I have already stated above, your using those services means you are using “socialized” services. You cannot have a strict definition for a word when it suits YOUR purposes and then have a loose definition when it does not. That is hypocrisy, plain and simple. As for the number of people that have died, I clearly stated where I got that number so that you may read the article yourself and draw your own conclusions. I cannot copy and paste the entire article here for obvious reasons. Finally, your argument about buying health insurance is, frankly, either naive or an outright lie. No amount of money will allow you to buy health insurance if the health insurance companies refuse to sell it to you because of a pre-existing condition. I have a close friend that got cancer when he was 23. He has been working, as have I, since we were both 14. I can purchase health insurance on the open market. He, however, cannot. His cancer has been in remission, thankfully, for over two decades. Still, no health care provider will touch him. He, like many Americans, got laid off this year after 15 years of loyal service, with numerous promotions, from the ad agency where he worked. He now has a thriving freelance business and is still actively seeking a staff position. His COBRA insurance will most likely run out prior to him finding another staff job with benefits. He will be uninsured. What do you say to people like him that have the money, want to pay, and yet are denied coverage? BTW- love how you ducked the Nixon issue. Typical. Finally, try to spend more time stating facts and less time name calling.

I do not listen to the guy much but the few times I have he seems to make legitimate points. Sure he’s way over the top in many cases and over simplifies complicated subjects, but how else could he keep so many people entertained for so many years.
Why shouldn’t he be able to own a pro sports team? Sports is the last true meritocracy that exists in this country so as a conservative he can definitely support that. I personally think it would be great if he’d push for affirmative action in the NFL and more women, gays and people of all colors would have a chance to play Pro Ball. Just maybe there could be a day where white and hispanic people can have shot to be a wide receiver or cornerback! If Rush could pull that off he and Keith would probably have cigar and oxy parties together.

Where Rush erred at ESPN is exactly where Florio has erred at PFT. He injected a political debate into a non-political forum causing a bunch of knee jerk reactions. Florio is obviously anti-Rush and anti-conservative and can’t keep himself taking a shot at both. Its his site, fine. He can do that. Just as Rush can put together a group of investors to try to buy an NFL franchise. Its a free country and the market will ultimately decide who is right.
But look at the Florio’s result. He’s polarized his own site. He’s no different than Rush, like him or not, and has degraded a great sports site. For God sakes we are taking about Health Care Reform on freakin’ PFT.
