Giants "encouraged" by Eli's progress, will be game-time decision

Eli Manning reportedly “did fine” at Giants practice Friday, a fact that left coach Tom Coughlin “absolutely” encouraged about his quarterback’s status for this week.

Manning took half of the first-team snaps. When Coughlin was asked if Manning reported any discomfort in his injured heel, he said, “Not that I’m going to mention to you.”

Still, the fact that Manning could do anything on Friday is a good sign that he’ll try to play.  The Giants are listing Manning as questionable on the injury report and say he’s a gametime decision Sunday.

Tight end Kevin Boss is doubtful with an ankle injury, while defensive starters Chris Canty DT Chris Canty, Michael Boley (knee), and Aaron Ross (hamstring) are out as expected.

Every time I look at Eli I ask myself how this dorky guy has become a top QB and SB winner. But I guess he did. Good for him.
I would bet anything he plays World of Warcraft.

Yeah really. The guy grew up as the youngest son in football’s First Family, you know he hasn’t exactly led the worst of lives

I am surprised that some Giant fans defend any criticism of Eli at every turn. I thought they were more thick skinned than that, evidently not.
I am never going to like Eli. Any dude that refuses to go to the team that drafted him is a punk in my book. If he was an established player in the league and he didn’t want to stay with the team that he was playing for and his contract was up, that would be one thing. But it is a totally different thing when the guy hasn’t played one game in the NFL, and he refuses to play for the team that drafted him. The vast majority of players coming into the league have no problem going to the team that drafted them. That is what allows bad teams to get better, having the ability to draft and sign the best players.
I have the same problem with Elway too. He didn’t want to play for the Colts.
If Eli was drafted by the Giants, and he refused to play for the Giants, I don’t think Giant fans would be too happy about it.

Well don’t worry… the Chargers got all those swell picks… and really screwed the Giants in that deal. All we got was that stupid Superbowl… where Eli was the MVP.

  7. promin1 says: Oct 9, 2009 4:45 PM

Filbertkiwi71…its not a question of being thick skinned. Its having to constantly hear jerkoffs like you and others daily criticize a guy that works his tail off, never says a bad word about anyone, minds his own business and is generally a all around good person. Who the F cares if you ever like him? What, you never said no to something you didn’t want to do you F-ing hypocrite? The guy had the cards to play and he played them. Like you wouldn’t have done the same thing? Get the F over it. I think people would say Eli is far from a punk.

Eli is a good nfl qb till the weather rolls into town in late november…. He has been awfull in december and the post season besides the sb run in which eli just threw jump balls to plex 15 times a game….

I am a Giant fan and have no problem with someone refusing to play for a given team. Who in their right mind would want to play for the Raiders. If I HAD NO CHOICE and were unhappy about who I was going to work for, for the next 6 years I would object also. I don’t know how the NFL is able to do this. Its probably part of the collective bargaining agreement. But how can they restrict a group , college players, that they don’t represent? I would guess that if a player decided to take the league to court over the issue they might win. The reason they don’t is because of the amount of money they get when they
    sign.

Filbertkiwi, if you’re still hung up on ELWAY, you need to learn to let things go and move on. Holy crap that was 1983 man. What do you care what goes through their minds on draft day? The giants gave up plenty in the “forced” trade with SD, so in the end it was determined fair in terms of raw value at the time. Where did you grow up to learn that most people are selfish in some way or other. So Eli refused to play for SD – at least he _informed_ them of it before the draft. I dont blame SD for drafting a guy who has informed them he won’t play for them, but give me a break, they aren’t brilliant for doing so either.
No NFL player is a saint, any of them. To think any of them are is foolish.

  11. Resolution says: Oct 9, 2009 4:54 PM

BTW Filbertkiwi71, I am a giants fan but I’m not calling him a saint. If he had refused to play for the giants my reaction would be “ok, fine, but we better get some fair market value for him AND someone who does want to play for us.”
If Football players were good people, then PFT would have a “TURD WATCH” on their website?? Of course not. They would have a “awesome guy watch” for those who give back to society. Personally, I’ve never seen an “Awesome Guy Watch”, have you… ?

Filbertkiwi71 – First off, he never said he wouldn’t play for San Diego. In fact, he made no public comments at all. San Diego “leaked” the news. They claimed that his agent told them Eli said he would rather not be drafted by San Diego because the organization, in his opinion and his dad’s, was not committed to winning. Which, at the time, was an absolutely correct comment. San Diego was a joke. They had four winning seasons in the last 20 years at that time. We will never know if he would have refused to play because San Diego traded him to NY and was very well compensated for the trade. As a Giants fan, I will be honest enough to admit NY overpaid. If Accorsi had bigger stones, he would told San Diego to enjoy having an unhappy QB or lower their demands. I suspect San Diego made this into a huge performance because of Ryan Leaf. They didn’t want to get burned by another number 1 pick at QB. I suspect they wanted Rivers all along and did not want to take Rivers at number one in case he failed. NY and Eli gave them the perfect excuse. If Rivers failed, they could say “Eli refused to play for us” and they got a truckload of picks for their trouble. If Rivers succeded, well, all the better. They got their guy and the picks. Win-win for San Diego.

I just got back from my podiatrist, and he thinks that Manning partially tore his plantar fascia. Heres why – there are in a nutshell three degrees of injury to the plantar fascia.
    1) Fraying of the ligament to the back of the foot, which causes swelling and a dull ache, and pain in the first few steps in morning. (I have this.) It eventually goes away with rest, ice, stretching, arch supports, anti-inflammatory’s, etc. But it takes a long time.
    2) A partial tear of the ligament, which is painful at the time it happens. Goes away with all of the above, plus PT. Before it heals, there is increased risk of a complete tear.
    3) Complete tear. Painful when it happens, but after that, no pain. Takes surgery to repair. Until it’s healed the foot has less power, and there is increased risk of damage to the muscles in the bottom of the foot.
In short, this will probable be with him all season, and he’s going to be less mobile than he usually is.

I hate the freakin giants……I really do…..but i can’t bust on Eli…It’s not like he’s Romo, and misses multiple games for a hangnail, he hasn’t missed a game yet i think, and to the g hen idiots who feel a need to defend him….Why? He’s the only NFC east QB with a super bowl title….Why bother?….Let sleeeping dogs lie…..Unless you….I dunno….want a bromance

    nflqb,
It is people like you who need to rewatch the playoffs in 2007. Plaxico was not the leading receiver for the Giants in the playoffs. Outside of the NFC Championship game against the Packers Plaxico had very little production. That is like the idiots who said the running game carried him during the postseason when the running game averaged a yard less per carry than in the regular season.
jreed “BTW, Eli is a Giant-Vag! the dude has a hang nail in his pinky toe and he wants out on IR. Come on dude. Get on the field and play. Brett Favre had to convince Eli to get on the field the last time they played him cuz little Eli shoulder was sore….” His shoulder was sore? He had a separated throwing shoulder and he didn’t miss a game. He hasn’t missed a game in his entire career and has started 82 consecutive games. Also Eli has played favre 3 times since that game.

  18. giantphan says: Oct 9, 2009 10:36 PM

i agree with whats his name and think what he said was spot on and totally correct, so that should settle that thing they were talking about now lets move on

  19. h r coursen says: Oct 10, 2009 1:36 PM

Thank you, Beezer. I was about to say the same thing. The final pass to Plax was the culmination of a drive in which Smith, Tyree, and Boss made the key catches. The semi-final win in GB showed that Eli plays well in bad weather. I’m sure he remembers his lousy game vs Iggles last year and will atone for it this early-winter. He does play hurt and will again. Still, I hope Coughlin takes him out early tomorrow. Carr is a great backup, and Carr can run as well.

  20. jreed says: Oct 11, 2009 9:33 AM

“He had a separated throwing shoulder and he didn’t miss a game. ”
Yeah because you had no Back up QB! He was whining the whole time to Coughlin and it Took Favre to come over and slap him around in order for him to play. Eli cries about every (Minor) Injury he has. The Guy is a Puss. I had a seperated shoulder for 4 years and I was still doing Push ups and Pull-ups in the Army. Its Painful Yes, but it really isnt that bad unless it pops. Look at the other QBs that play thru pain: Favre, McNabb, McNair(RIP), Rivers, I could go on…They never Cry. Just want on the field to throw some TD’s. Eli is good, But a Crybaby!
