So the thinking before January 2009 was that Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan were being overlooked for head-coaching jobs in the NFL because owners feared that the Ryan brothers would act too much like their fiery and belligerent and punch-throwing father, Buddy.
And so they did their best to not act like Buddy Ryan, although Rob at one point last year stumbled off message with a profane rant directed at former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, who had suggested that owner Al Davis was calling the shots on the defense that Ryan was coordinating. But that episode was widely viewed as an aberration, with Rob Ryan merely doing what Davis had told him to do.
After the 2008 season, Rex was hired by the Jets, presumably after owner Woody Johnson was persuaded that his new head coach would be something other than a loud-mouthed loose cannon.
Since then, Rex has at times been a loud-mouthed loose cannon. But it hasn’t resulted in widespread criticism.
So Rob, now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland, is coming out of his shell. Yesterday, he openly questioned whether the field goal from Bengals kicker Shayne Graham that defeated the Browns in overtime last Sunday was actually no good.
Rob also had some choice words for his team’s next opponent.
He offered praise for the Buffalo wideouts and running back Marshawn Lynch. And then Rob Ryan said of quarterback Trent Edwards, “I don’t think that’s Carson Palmer back there by any
stretch.”
Ryan elaborated.
“He’s not,” Ryan said. “Not too many quarterbacks are. The guy can run and do some
things, but we’ve played Brett Favre, we’ve played
Carson Palmer. Those are two pretty good quarterbacks right
there. This guy [Edwards] always seems to have a lot to say.
“So I’m going to say the same thing.
Let’s go. Let’s get it on, see what he’s all
about this week.”
Ryan seems to think that Edwards was running his mouth after the Bills beat the Raiders last year, but Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer found nothing from the Buffalo quarterback that sounds even remotely controversial.
So maybe Rob simply realizes that Rex’s success could be paving the way for Rob to become a head coach, too. And thus Rob apparently has decided that, instead of suppressing his genetic code, he should embrace it.
In unrelated news, Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will be wearing a helmet during games.
Gee Florio, I thought you where a moron but this takes the cake. Carson Palmer and Brett Farve are better than Edwards. And that field goal was questionable at best.
Where is the controversy in all this? It is just another Florio basing of the Browns.
Rob Ryan is such a douchebag. If your going to talk smack, at least know what your talking about. Trent Edwards is one of the most low key guys and never says things about others. If he is going to make shit up the least he could do is pick someone that could make your statements believable!!!
I couldn’t stand Buddy. But I’ve always like Rex and Rob. Buddy was a narrow-minded, self-promoting, butt-scratcher. The sons seem like real, honest, competitive, clever, work-aholics who generate success. Yes, they can crow, but it is a team-oriented crowing, not an egocentric one. During the hiring season, I was an avid Rex fan. But my area team, the Rams, went for Spagnoeuoauolo. I told all my buddies, the Jets will be great this year.
Look, we live in the DNA age. But this has to do with experience, culture, commitment. Rex and Rob will be greater than Buddy ever was.
This bills fan WISHES that Edwards would grow a pair and live up to the ego that Ryan is portraying him as.
GASP…identical twins behaving the same way?
whoda thunkit?
quite the revelation eh michael?
giddyup
The defensive co-ordinator of the Cleveland Browns talking smack about the Buffalo Bills. OMFG !!!! Does ESPN know about this ? It’s the most controversial thing EVER said !!! He goes from the Raiders to the Browns. Wow. In the words of the immortal Dean Wormer (loosly paraphrased), “fat, losing and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”
This is stupid. Edwards is not a trash talker lol. I would rather have him than Quinn or Anderson. Rex at least has a right to trash talk, even though its annoying. He is the HC of a pretty good team. Rob on the other hand is coaching one of the worst defenses in the league. So he should just stfu, because nobody fears or even cares about the Cleveland D. Whoever sees cleveland on their schedule might as well get the W
You’re the INSTIGATOR FLORIO,
You make mountains out of mole hills….
No wonder all the idiots that post on this site follow suit, with idiotic ravings about Limbaugh and Obama….
This site has made a turn for the worst…
Rob ryan is a dumbass. First of all Edwards is not a trash talker, Rob is just trying to stir things up and get in the news. Also he has no right to trash talk opposing QBs when he watches Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn every Sunday. Finally, he wishes he was half as good as his brother. At least Rex has coached a great D in Baltimore and is the HC of a pretty good Jets squad, so he has a right to trash talk (but it’s annoying). Rob is coachign one of the worst D’s in the league. So he should stfu. I bet Trent Edwards and the Bills will shred the Browns D
Who talks more shit than you Florio?
hahaha this is funny. I have no issue with it, I firmly encourage trash talking whether its from players or coaches….fine by me. The Browns haven’t played alot of slouch QB’s yet. Favre,Palmer,Flacco in their first 4 games…that’s pretty hardcore. Trent Edwards isn’t as good as those guys. Just the way it is. Be too funny if Cleveland goes up there and wins. When was the last time Buffalo beat the Browns? Think Cleveland has won the last 3.
Is it just me or is the Ryan family the biggest bunch of insecure Alpha males ever? All 3 of them constantly whine about anyone and everyone and how they aren’t appreciated.
Yeah, Buddy won a SB as am assistant and Rex is off to a great start after leading a solid defense.
All of that said, Rex will blow his wad early this season and won’t last three years.
The “Peter Principle” is clearly at play whenever any Ryan is printed to an HC job.
Sorry Rob. You are a tool. Good assistant, but the only way you’ll get a HC job is if some loser owner is looking for a clown show to sell a few tix in the short term.
I’m almost certain Dick Jauron chewed out the O-line for not protecting Trent. T. Edwards needs to get the ball out quicker and take the big shots down the field.
This post begs for the two following observations:
First – Rob Ryan is merely attempting to fire up his team and/or rattle Trent Edwards’ head for the game. What do the Browns have to lose when it just might work? Trent is low on the list when it comes to trash-talking QBs, fitting right in there with Aaron Rodgers and Chad Pennington. Perhaps Ryan confused him with two QBs he dealt with last year in the AFC West: Cutler and Rivers. Or maybe Ryan doesn’t even know who Trent Edwards is… or the Buffalo Bills… or that he’s even working in America… or the planet Earth.
Second – he’s right about Trent Edwards being no Carson Palmer. Unfortunately.
@Bearsrule,
that’s “fat, DRUNK & stupid.
I don’t think Rob is going to get a HC job unless he can first successfully coordinate a defense.
Woody Johnson. Haha.
@bloodystupidjohnson
@bloodystupidjohnson
It’s best when you’re insulting someone’s intelligence not to use the wrong word. Otherwise you generally end up only demonstrating your lack thereof.
stupid johnson, i agree with your nickname. i thought you where a moron too. now florio, quit basing the browns.
bears rule: fyi buddy was an assistant on the jets and vikings super bowl teams before being hired by halas. ditka accepted the hc job with the stipulation buddy runs the d. so while you, internet poster thinks buddy a fool, three hall of famers like ewbank, grant and halas thought otherwise. i tend to agree with them. sorry.
bluenoser: buddy’s schtick was designed to take the pressure off the players and place it on himself, it was never self serving.
for example, the bombastic jackass you describe surely would have ruined cris carter’s career by noting that he was being cut for his cocaine use, not his production. buddy instead gave away a hall of fame player (soon i think) and allowed him a chance to become the person he ultimately did become. the fact that he (and now rob and rex) had the most inventive defenses and the players (almost to a man african-americans) loved him like a father puts a lie to your suggestion of closemindedness. far from it. had buddy not gone into coaching, my guess is he would have taught high school; he always was primarily a teacher and motivator.
Coming from a guy whose team is 0-4 and defense has allowed 118pts in 4 games…
You try coaching a defense composed mainly of your head coaches previous teams backups and cast offs.
With that joke of a team and idiotic trades left and right he’s probably just yelling loud enough that he’s the first guy the owner picks to replace their incompetent head coach.
No wonder the Browns are the laughing stock of the NFL — I am sure after Sunday, Ryan’s so-called defense will make Trent Edwards look Jim Kelly. Ryan ought to stuff another cheeseburger into his big fat mouth and stfu.
There’s something seductive and charming about Rex and his utterances. They’re always interesting. But it bothers me that he’s basically calling out players, teams, etc., that are gonna have to take out their steam on his PLAYERS, not on HIM. Wonder if anybody in that locker room is hoping he loses his voice before he gets them all killed -
