Broncos knock off Pats in OT

Maybe Josh McDaniels was sandbagging the world.

A month ago, there were few who genuinely believed that the Broncos would be a solid team in McDaniels’ first year as head coach.  He had traded quarterback Jay Cutler.  And McDaniels had bungled, by all appearances, a standoff with receiver Brandon Marshall.  And McDaniels, when meeting with the media, fidgeted more than a third-base coach trying to pass signals to the batter.

Today, the Broncos are among the top teams in the NFL.  The Broncos and the Colts are the only two undefeated teams in the AFC, the Indy could still drop to 4-1 tonight at Nashville.  (On NBC.)

With so many wondering about McDaniels’ Broncos, “Are they for real?”, the team turned the punctuation on that sentence into an exclamation point, beating the Patriots in overtime at Mile High Stadium, 20-17.

Jim Nantz of CBS pointed out in the closing seconds that Denver and New England (actually, Boston) met in the first ever AFL game, and that the Broncos won that one.  Also by three points.

After the game, McDaniels was as excited as any coach we’ve ever seen.  In a season that has featured first-year Jets coach Rex Ryan acting like Captain Lou Albano, McDaniels made like Hulk Hogan, moving alone toward one end of the stadium and firing up an already fully raucous crowd.

At one point, I thought he might tear off his hoodie.

Meanwhile, McDaniels’ mentor, New England coach Bill Belichick, who eschewed the hoodie in favor of George Costanza’s Gore-tex coat, searched in vain for his former colleague in the hopes of giving him a reverse-Mangini embrace.

They very well might have another chance at a post-game hug in January; these two teams seem destined to meet again.

I am bar-b-quing a lot of crow. Florio I have a big serving for you. Go check out ortons stats

  3. CaptainFantastik says: Oct 11, 2009 7:56 PM

Now Belichick knows what it feels like to be snubbed at midfield for the handshake for a change. But no doubt Pats fans will be here calling McDaniels “classless” even though their own guy is guilty of the same thing a bunch of times over.

  4. TFBuckFutter says: Oct 11, 2009 7:56 PM

Gotta give the Broncos a lot of credit. They played hard, I earned a lot of respect.
Definitely not blaming the loss on the officiating because I think it was confoundingly bad going both ways…..but seriously, it was WEIRD. Calling forward progress on a player who was on the way to the ground? Flagging someone for taunting before they had done anything? Very odd.

  5. Bob S. says: Oct 11, 2009 7:57 PM

Same bs call as in NYG/Oak game that you complained about. Except here it decided the game!

Are they for real? Hell Yeah! They’re for real. THAT was a big win!

  8. Patriots51 says: Oct 11, 2009 8:00 PM

hell i was the first person last week to complain about the Ravens whining about the refs.. but they were right.. these goddamn referees need to swallow their whistles.. there was one play where i believe it was gaffney who clearly fumbled and they said progress was stopped which it wasnt. and also they threw a flag for taunting on meriweather even though the replay CLEARLY showed the ref throwing the flag before he taunted… its absolutely ridiculous these refs are deciding the outcome of games

Feels pretty good to be “the worst 5-0 team in the league.” Can’t wait to punk the soft Charger’s arse next Monday and become “the worst 6-0 team in the league.”

  11. bacon! says: Oct 11, 2009 8:01 PM

Oh yeah, I’d say they’re for real. They’re taking the division this year. Life must be awfully sweet for McDaniels right now.

You guys don’t know anything more than the fans. Just admit it.

  24. Jordiway73 says: Oct 11, 2009 8:18 PM

A lot of bad calls in this especially at the end of the game. Brady’s arm was going forward on that fumble under 2 mins and they didnt even look at it. Knowshon Moreno fumbled under 2 mins they didnt review that!! How about that taunting call at the end the flag came out before he ever even taunted what was that all about. Bill could not challenge the fumble because they said his forward motion had stopped whatever the fix was in on this one. FU*K THE BRONCOS

  25. sullijo says: Oct 11, 2009 8:18 PM

Never thought I’d type this…..Tom Brady was outplayed by Kyle Orton today. He missed way too many open receivers that would have went for big plays. I think Orton may have completed more passes to R Moss than Brady. Something is wrong there.

Can we start laughing at the fools in the media yet, who thought brady was gonna put up 40 plus td’s and a 120 passer rating just cause his name is tom brady?
I mean, the media had every rite to think tom was gonna make the rest of the leage look they they dont deserve to be playing on the same field as him since he put up more then 28 tds in a season over 10 times in his career….oops or is that once in his career?

  31. comment_submission_error says: Oct 11, 2009 8:44 PM

A game like that gets Denver fan completely out of the basement. Can’t blame them, either. Denver looked like they would be lucky to win five games all season before play started. Still, McDaniel might want to check himself a bit. They aren’t going undefeated, and that hotel room stroke he had going after the game might not play so well after their first loss.

I don’t know who does a worse job, the officials or the prognosticators.
Too many flags, its affecting the game too much, looks like basketball in the last two minutes, everybody is looking for a flag after every play.
And the so called experts in the media, no better than if they were some hack who started his own blog. The game is changing, not sure its a good thing.

  34. sullijo says: Oct 11, 2009 8:45 PM

Patriots fans complaining about the refs and classless coaches. That’s funny.
If the Broncos were as bad as you said they were prior to the game, none of this should have mattered in a 96-0 rout.
The broncos outscored your team 20-7 after spotting a 10-0 lead – explain that.

  40. BroncoGuroo says: Oct 11, 2009 9:00 PM

The ref threw the flag for pass interference which was waved off when the other ref told him it was tipped, and a entirely different ref threw the flag for taunting. Also Mcdaniels, when asked about the no shake, explained that he and Billy had talked before the game about not shaking and just waving to each other so there would not be anything made of it.
kudos to the Pats fans that admit they were beaten and not robbed…… hint this is not you whiney bitch jordi

  44. Richman says: Oct 11, 2009 9:08 PM

Good play by the Donkeys, Brady is still adjusting
the plant foot to correct his accuracy. Time will heal the misconnects with his receivers. Remember Pats fans …. NE needs to only make the playoffs ,, then the season starts fresh. All will be ok. Todays loss was a bummer but no big deal.

All you haters / doubters, you said we had a toguh stretch coming up, and you were right! Now we’re 2 – 0 after Dallas and NEW ENGLAND !!!! Look out Chargers, you’re next!!!!!! You want to keep doubting the Broncos now???? Dallas became so-so after we beat them. Is New England so-so now because we beat them?? If that’s true, there are going to be alot of ” SO-SO ” teams this tear!!! LMFAO!!!!!

  46. IWanttoPunchFloriointheFace says: Oct 11, 2009 9:28 PM

Donkeys still suck and they always will – they always get the ref calls at home and are the luckiest team ever…you will be watching the SuperBowl from home as usual so spout all you want right now.
We all know that Donkey fans are the most obnoxious in the league. The only reason they won is because the Patsies got sick looking at those ugly ass throwbacks (or is it throwups).

And I don’t know about other Pats fans….but I disliked Denver because of the minor out of division rivalry they had going…..but I don’t mind seeing Josh McDaniels do well. I was half rooting for Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis to be successful in their individual endeavors as well.
The reason? They aren’t raging douchebags like Mangini. He’s the only one I’m happy to see fail.

It looked to me like Belichick and McDaniels simply couldn’t find each other in the crush of the post-game crowd, but leave it to fans of the Cheatriots to manufacture a controversy there. I also thought there were a couple of questionable calls on each side, but nothing more egregious than I’ve seen in most other Week 5 games. Bottom line is that McDaniels has this team believing and playing like champions. A win over the lifeless Chargers next Monday night going into the bye-week sets the stage for one of the most surprising teams of this decade. Broncos have owned the Cheatriots for the last 10 years.

    Exactly TF
I’ve hated the Broncos for decades cause the Pats could never beat Elway, but since Cutler is gone and McDaniels is in, I’m pulling for them except for today.
After the first half it looked like cruise control, but the Pats O flopped in the 2nd half.
Can’t blame the D for that one. Pats have to put up more points, or the playoffs will be tough to reach.

As a Broncos fan, my favorite part of the game was in the second half.
The Broncos special teams gave the Patriots offense, 2 extra tries on offense to move the ball down the field and score some points.
But the Broncos defense stuffed them, three distincly seperate times on the same drive…
Now that, is a real defense!

  62. TFBuckFutter says: Oct 11, 2009 11:47 PM

gorky, That was pretty damn impressive. If I recall, that drive is also the reason your offense ended up pinned at the 2, and the responded just as well.

  63. troy brown80 says: Oct 12, 2009 12:43 AM

pats fan here. congrats to the broncos, they are for real. blaming this loss on the refs is moronic; losing matt light probably had the biggest negative aspect on the game for the pats. the playcalling was atrocious after he went out, leaned on the run game far too much when it was getting mediocre production. brady definitely was off today; odd, since he had good protection most of the game. eh, we suck against the broncos anyways.
also sudden death overtime sucks; a coin toss shouldn’t potentially determine the outcome of a game.

  64. Gautam says: Oct 12, 2009 1:16 AM

well from what I saw McDaniels tried to search for Belichick once the game was over. He hugged every single member of the Pats staff that he came across which showed the mutual respect both have for each other. They just lost track of both of them. McDaniels then probably assumed that Belichick just left the game.

  65. FireJerryJones says: Oct 12, 2009 8:02 AM

Get over this handshake thing. They always get together for about five minutes in the tunnel after the game.
    Unless it’s Mangini.
Belichick loves McDaniels. Probably will long after the Denver fans run him out of town. The kid was leading the cheers in the corner of the stadium. I guess that’s what a 32 year old head coach does… when he’s not pi**ing the Special Teams coach’s ear…
I’d bet that the only fans in McDaniels corner pre-season…. were Patriots fans.
