McDaniels, Belichick agreed not to do handshake, met after game

Way too much attention is paid to post-game handshakes, so let’s keep this quick.

Despite the appearance that Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels unsuccessfully looked for each other after Sunday’s game, The Denver Post writes that the two coaches agreed not to meet on the field.

“We agreed before the game that we would wave,” McDaniels said. “We
shook hands before the game. We knew that there has been so much made
of him and handshakes that we agreed to just go ahead and do that, but
I talked to him before the game.”

Instead, Belichick privately visited with McDaniels in his coaching office later.

“He’s a great friend; he’s a great teacher of mine,” McDaniels said, speaking of Belichick.

Somewhere, Eric Mangini is stewing, wondering why he couldn’t be the successful fist-pumping Belichick disciple that the mentor loves best.

..smart move…why should they feed the beast.
Hollow symbolism needs to fade away.

I wonder if it has anything to do with McDaniels forgetting to tell the world about the camera project…

  3. azwildcats96 says: Oct 12, 2009 10:55 AM

I think the point of contention was tongue or no tongue when they met at mid-field after the game and decided against PDA.

  4. Matt Walsh says: Oct 12, 2009 11:10 AM

How lucky for Josh, Belicheat decided not to use a camera on one of his former employees.
Best go back to your cheating ways Bill, since then not much good has happened.

Eric Mangini broke the unwritten coaching rule and tried to raid the Patriots of talent. Josh McDaniels did not.
McDaniels has class and its showing in the 5-0 Broncos.
Congrats to them. Why did Gostkowski choose yesterday to miss a FG ugggg.

If it’s true Bellicheck and McDaniles agreed before the game to forego the handshake and meet afterwards…
Bill scammed Josh into looking like an overly excited, fist-pumping moron when Bill did the “lost puppy” routine at midfield…

Belichick doesn’t kowtow to the scum that is today’s media……another reason I love him…..

  12. VN says: Oct 12, 2009 12:22 PM

Another reason? You’re saying there was actually a first reason?
Belichik makes Kevin Garnett, Pete Rose, and O.J. Simpson lovable by comparison. And that says a lot.

  13. hk94 says: Oct 12, 2009 12:22 PM

The fact that they discussed if they should do it or not is silly. It may be hollow symbolism and incinsere, but at least it sets an example of sportsmanship for pop warner and high school kids watching the game.
Seriously, makes no sense to me. They probably spent more effort deciding if they should or shouldn’t than it would have taken to just shake hands and be done with it. As such, instead of answering questions about what I found to be an entertaining game (note: I couldn’t care less about either of these teams), McDaniels now is having to address issues about his sportsmanship. If they meant it as a gesture to end the post-game handshake, there are other stupid traditions in football that they should focus their attention on instead.

mangini is somewhere pumping his fist too …. he is jerking everyone trying to convince them he is head coach material
bill should have left him in cleveland working as a copy boy
bill could give two chits about the media and mangini … if it wasn’t mandatory he wouldn’t talk to them

Josh is a clown and a joke as well as the entire Broncos organization. Joshee boy looked like a liitle punk kid running around the stadium after the game. Wait until the pretenders lose their first game, he’ll be crying for Papa Belichick to counsel him. Broncos fans are as stupid as Joshee boy. If you recall they hated him for losing their precious Cutler in the offseason and just because they’re winning all appears to be forgotten. Wrong, when the losing starts the fair weather fans will show their true colors. The Chargers or Chiefs may very well finish ahead of the Donkeys once all 16 games have been played.

What the hell did Garnett ever do to be put in that company?
Let alone Rose and Bill, are you actually going to compare cheating to murder?
Congrats: You win the Asshat of the day award!!

  17. bearsrule says: Oct 12, 2009 1:04 PM

The guys on TV described perfectly what was going on. Billichek WAS looking for McDaniels in the crowd. I don’t understand how this total non-story ever became a story.

  18. MikeMcDPhilly says: Oct 12, 2009 1:05 PM

I’m calling BS on this. McDaniels is covering for the fact that he gloated like a seven year old girl winning a beauty pageant. He understands the lack of handshake was his fault and doesn’t want Belichick to take heat on it.
If you watched the postgame, you saw McDaniels running around like an idiot and Belichick clearly trying to find him. When it became clear to Belichick that McDaniels was not trying to find him, but rather running around the field pumping his fist, he said “forget this” and headed for the locker room.
This is a nice gesture by McDaniels after he clearly lacked class and sportsmanship postgame.

  20. stanjam says: Oct 12, 2009 1:24 PM

wow i just saw the game highlights on the nfl network and the ref threw the flag before the patriot was even standing up and he called taunting ….. lol nice cover ….. maybe it was intent to taunt ….. so now we throw flags early in case there is a penalty
on the opening kickoff we will spot the ball on the 15 yard line because you might block in the back lol

  24. MikeMcDPhilly says: Oct 12, 2009 2:55 PM

    Genius,
Belichick was clearly looking for something or someone and then turned and headed to the locker room. You are correct that I inferred he was looking for McDaniels. I did not think that was such a stretch.
It’s just a theory. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. Just a guess at what really happened based on what I saw. I don’t think I’m pulling stuff out of thin air though either.

There is no unwritten rule about raiding an old team of talent. if its unwritten then how did you find out about it? Every coach worth his salt recruits players that he has a history with in order to speed up the winning process. Parcells, Sean Payton and Haley all have ex-Cowboys on their rosters. Its only helping the Saints but it is what it is. Football is a business and coaches go after any talent that they can find regardless of team. To berate Mangini for looking in the scrap heaps is just dumb.

Guys like you however are no better than the fair weather fans of any team. Not only were you right there with them knocking McDaniels before a game was played, you’re now here trying to find another way to take him down a notch after his success.
Please, you’re pathetic if you think the (0-5) Chiefs are going to finish ahead of the (5-0) Broncos. Tis notion isn’t pathetic due to the comparison of talent, but because of mathematics in general. Really it’s sad you’re bias makes you this moronic.
Denver fans were too hasty to judge McDaniels. I’ve always been a believer that an owner should give his coach enough rope to hang himself. If the owner doesn’t feel comfortable doing that then he shouldn’t have hired the head coach in the first place. This is the case with Josh McDaniels. I believed in reserving judgement until the season began. Now McDaniels is the top candidate for Coach of the Year.

Al Davis’ 40 Time, i agree with you about giving the coach time ….. look at pitts. record, what have they had three coaches total???? alot of us were calling for coughlins head (me included, and i’m not a fair weather fan, i go way back) thankfully the owners didn’t jump the gun.
good luck the rest of the season

Nice job dragging Mangini into your stupid story. Unfortunately for boy wonder they won’t be playing turds in the playoffs. By that time reality will settle in and they will be exposed for being the middle of the road team that they really are. Meanwhile, Belichick will be playing in the AFC Championship game.

    1. I am a life long Pats fan but lose the damn old time losers uniform it’s cursed!
    2. There are 11 games left to go – lets see whos standing tall then (My vote is both the Pats and Broncos make the playoffs by winning their divisions).
    3. If Bill wasn’t looking for Josh then who was he looking for? He was sure seriously searching for someone!
    4. The taunting had to be verbal prior to the hand move. It usuanlly goes unnoticed but it was within a few feet of the ref. BAd move hotshot!
    5. The average emotional age of the people who post here is not old enought to drive! (omw!).
I’ve heard more sense made in the high school team locker room.

You don’t have to like it, as a Broncos fan I am sure you don’t. But you have to man up and move on instead of name calling. Try to mature a bit! You will get farther in life. If you have kids, would you really want to set that example by name calling a fellow football fan in a comments section? Get a grip! As the old saying goes, the truth hurts.

Name calling??? You mean like “clown”, “joke”, “Joshee boy”, “punk kid”, “pretenders”, and “fairweather fans”? THAT kind of name calling…ALL lifted from YOUR initial post here.
Try following your OWN advice, LOSER.
And as for “the truth hurting”, the ONLY truth here is that YOUR team is very mediocre at BEST…and absent a fluke play would currently sport a LOSING record. Get a grip yourself, fool.
